What happens[edit]

Apparently today the Mediawiki API was disabled on English Wikitravel. See for example [1] which returns:

MediaWiki API is not enabled for this site. Add the following line to your LocalSettings.php

I assume this was done to combat spambot issues. Will it be re-enabled?

Checking. I know they are trying different approaches, so that may be the case.--IBobi talk email 13:29, 10 August 2012 (EDT)
I have no indication that this is a permanent change. They're just trying to lighten the spam load and investigate a solution to the possible spoofing issue. It's possible that making it read-only could work, I don't know.--IBobi talk email 18:29, 10 August 2012 (EDT)

What should happen[edit]

How to fix it[edit]

If you want the API enabled in read-only mode (so that it is impossible for spambots or anyone else to edit pages with it), just add the following to your configuration:

$wgEnableAPI = true;
$wgEnableWriteAPI = false;

Additional comments[edit]

Is thee any further word on the enabling of the API? My site made us of the API and is down until I can get access back to the API (readonly).
