The archaeotourism or Archaeological tourism is an alternative form of cultural tourism specialized that, within the frame of the tourist activities it persecutes to promote the passion by the past historical-archaeological and the conservation of the historical patrimony.

Although their origins go back to the same antiquity, because ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans practiced excursions to old sites, in fact like alternative tourist activity is much more recent, because it has not been after end of the century XX that several cultural associations and tourist organizations of several countries began to incorporate between their supplies this modality or tourist specialty.

The denomination generalized and accepted already internationally between the hispano-parlantes countries to talk about to the activities of the archaeological tourism is Arqueoturismo (Archaeotourism) although this does not begin to know itself until Hispanic-Cuban investigator Georgeos Diaz-Montexano initiated a series of publications in year 1995 about ArchaeoTourism in several magazines of History and Archaeology like "Arqueología y Enigmas de la Historia", "Arqueología Sin Fronteras" and "ArqueoHistoria", and shortly after founded the first specialized society on Archaeotourism, ArqueoTour (2000). In this sense, it can affirmed that the mentioned investigator is the true founder of the archaeotourism like alternative tourist activity of systematic practice and with own denomination, that the cultural thing with rural or the ecological thing combines historical and.

In the last Congress on Sustainable Rehabilitation of the Cultural Patrimony, celebrated from the 16 to the 18 of June of 2005 in Salas (Asturias, Spain) that have been the fourth call from 1997, has discussed on Archaeology and Patronage, and the archaeotourism or Archaeological tourism as if it was a novel proposal, obvious by ignorance of the activities of this type has appeared to that already have been coming making for years in diverse parts of the world.

Like the Ecological tourism or Ecotourism the archaeotourism or Archaeological tourism is promoted like an ethical-historical tourism, in which also it is conceited like fundamental the well-being of the historical-archaeological patrimony of the local populations, allowing the development of cultural associations, companies and cooperatives that dedicate themselves to offer this type of services of added value.

The best definition of which it is the archaeological tourism or archaeotourism we found it in the own words of its founders:

The passion by the past is something inherent to the human being. As it says well: «Town that does not know from where town comes that does not know to where it goes».
The Archaeotourism or archaeological tourism is ideal for which they look for a higher knowledge and sublimates, tie to the meditation and the relaxation, in perfect syntony with the surroundings or ecosystem that is, integration with the Mother Nature, but always in old places, next to the ruins of the "enigmatic missing civilizations".
Sites and places magician-monks or asylums. From the most remote prehistoric times. From the era of the dinosaurios to the Medieval Age. In order to develop his activities it has a nourished group of authentic experts in each one of the matters.
Therefore, archaeologists, paleontologists, anthropologists, historians and specialists in trips will unite their knowledge under a same objective: to offer to the traveller a wonderful and unforgettable experience, an intensive course and of introduction to each one of these manifestations of the human knowledge. This way the visitor will not be a simple traveller, will be in addition an apprentice in sciences to the past.
Some times will feel a paleontologist discovering tracks of dinosaurious and others will feel like Indiana Jones in the Damn Temple, mainly when penetrating in the mysterious caverns and artificial caves that long ago served from temples our ancestors. Enigmatic places loaded of an atmosphere of magic and mystery that, sometimes, surpass to all fiction created by the cinema...

Although as alternative tourist activity of systematic practice the archaeological tourism is quite recent, many international state institutions and governments already begin it to contemplate like a viable alternative activity for the sustainable economic-social development. Several countries exist that in fact take to years practicing almost like main the archaeological tourism --a times only -- activity for the sources of economic income of the tourist sector, as it is the case of Egypt, Mexico and Peru, having this last country thousands of archaeological sites to visit.

In implanted Spain in spite of to have created and until an own denomination, Archaeotourism, in fact still does not exist a generalization actually of this tourist modality and are few still the associations, cooperatives and companies that offer this type of alternative tourist activity. According to study made by the UB, TT.OO. of the 38 declared sites World-wide Patrimony that has Spain, eight are of archaeological tourism. Most of the specialist in cultural tourism of the U.S.A. and Europe they do not know the archaeological potential of Spain and those that know it confess to have problems to find receptive specialized, that in effect they exist, but are small and are dispersed.
