Yachats [4] is a city on the Central Oregon Coast.

Understand[edit]

Yachats (pronounced YAH-hots) is an oceanside city located in Oregon’s Central coast with the Pacific Ocean to the West and mountains to the East. The Native American meaning of Yachats is “dark waters at the foot of the mountain.” Yachats is a small town recognized for the rugged ocean coast and mountains and is described as the Gem of the Oregon coast. Once you have experienced the landscape, it is likely you relate to this description. The combination of hiking trails and rocky coastline offer the promise of adventures, unforgettable experiences, and opportunities for taking in the scenery.

For in-town recreations, there are a number of shops and restaurants, all within walking distance, available for visiting and enjoying the local wares. The city of Yachats also hosts community events throughout the year, and the Chamber of Commerce guide to events, local attractions, and hiking trails for the area can be viewed at the official website. The recommended way to get to the attractions and trails is to travel by automobile and walk whenever possible.

When visiting Yachats, activities range from hiking, paddling in the Yachats river, beachcombing, investigating tidepools, or strolling through the city. The Cape Perpetua scenic and hiking trails are spectacular, and one of the best-known hiking trails is dedicated to a blind, Native American woman was forced to walk 80 miles from the Coos Bay area to Yachats in 1860. Along the way, she fell many times leaving blood drops along the way. In 2009 a statue was placed on the trail, and on New Year’s Day, a group of Native Americans and Yachats’s residents walk the trail to honor the Native Americans and the trials they endured.

The 804 trail is suitable for all ages, and follows the coastline as shown in the map. The photos show the spectacular views of the coastline while walking the 1.3-mile-long trail.
