When visiting Yachats, activities range from hiking, paddling in the Yachats river, beachcombing, investigating tidepools, or strolling through the city. The Cape Perpetua scenic and hiking trails are spectacular, and one of the best-known hiking trails is dedicated to a blind, Native American woman was forced to walk 80 miles from the Coos Bay area to Yachats in 1860.  Along the way, she fell many times leaving blood drops along the way. ( In 2009 the statue shown below was placed on the trail, and on New Year’s Day, a group of Native Americans and Yachats’s residents walk the trail to honor the Native Americans and the trials they endured. The Native American meaning of Yachats is “dark waters at the foot of the mountain.” Yachats is a small town recognized for the rugged ocean coast and mountains and is described as the Gem of the Oregon coast.
