Revision as of 20:59, 28 March 2006

This page contains lists of articles and images which are recommended for deletion. Any Wikitraveller can recommend an article or image for deletion, and any Wikitraveller can comment on the deletion nomination. Articles and images are presumed guilty until proven innocent. After fourteen (14) days of discussion, if a consensus is reached to retain an article, it won't be deleted. Otherwise it will be deleted by an administrator. Please read the Nominating and Commenting sections prior to nominating articles/images or commenting on nominations.

Contents

Nominating

The basic format for a deletion nomination is the following:

Chicken
* Delete. Not a valid travel article topic. ~~~~

Please follow these steps when nominating an article or image for deletion:

  1. First read the deletion policy and verify that the article or image really is a candidate for deletion.
  2. If the article or image meets the deletion criteria, do any preparatory work (like orphaning an image, or combining the article with one it duplicates) prior to listing it here.
  3. For the article or image being proposed for deletion, add a vfd tag to the top of the article so that people viewing the article will know that it is proposed for deletion.
  4. Add a link to the article or image at the end of the list below, along with the reason why it is being listed for deletion. Sign your vote using four tildes ("~~~~"). List one article or image per entry.

Commenting

All Wikitravellers are asked to state their opinion about articles and images listed for deletion. The format for comments is:

Chicken
* Delete. Not a valid travel article topic. TravelNut 25:25, 31 Feb 2525 (EDT)
* Keep. There is a town in Alaska called Chicken. ~~~~

When leaving comments:

  1. First read the deletion policy and verify that the article or image really is a candidate for deletion.
  2. You may vote to delete, keep, or redirect the article. If your opinion is that the article should be kept or redirected, please state why you feel that way. Sign your vote using four tildes ("~~~~").

  • Delete. Copied from Wikipedia [1] but because they are licenced under GNU are incompatable with CC-by-SA. -- Huttite 18:59, 5 Jan 2006 (EST)

North_(Malaysia)

  • Delete. Merged into the more commonly known West_Coast_(Malaysia) which extends from north to south.Slleong 05:39, 9 March 2006 (EST)
  • Keep & redirect to West_Coast_(Malaysia) Changed my mind - instead:
  • Keep & disambiguate (which I've just done, incorporating state lists/links).
  • Delete. -- Tom Holland (xltel) 15:31, 14 March 2006 (EST)
  • What do people think of such quasi-disambiguations, i.e. where you disambiguate not because of repeated name, but because the region covers other regions? I myself am in favour, having done so for North (India) after I split it into two regions. But it is not covered under policy — Ravikiran 01:10, 25 March 2006 (EST)
    • My personal preference would be to come up with a clear set of regions and stick to them, and only set up redirects and disambiguations when there are common region names in use that differ from what Wikitravel uses. In this case I don't think "North Malaysia" would be a common enough term that we need an article for it. -- Ryan 20:00, 25 March 2006 (EST)
    • Good. So North India stays and this goes — Ravikiran 00:00, 26 March 2006 (EST)
      • Is the edit history worth considering when thinking about how common usage of such a term might be? Neither North (Malaysia) nor Central (Malaysia) started out as disambiguations - the origins of both seem to be pretty much identical to North (India) except that instead of a single region being subdivided, the entire region was re-divided. 203.151.141.194 05:55, 27 March 2006 (EST)

Central_(Malaysia)

  • Delete. Even more unheard of than the above, also merged contents into West_Coast_(Malaysia).Slleong 05:39, 9 March 2006 (EST)
  • Keep - was converted to a disambiguation yesterday Keep if keeping North (Malaysia) - otherwise delete. 203.151.141.194 06:05, 27 March 2006 (EST)
  • Delete. -- Tom Holland (xltel) 15:31, 14 March 2006 (EST)

Jones Creek

  • It is something in Oregon, but what is it? Just a creek or a city by that name? --Ravikiran 22:02, 14 March 2006 (EST)
    • According to this link, it's a campground and part of the Oregon state park system. Doubtful whether it qualifies as a destination; content should be merged into an appropriate, larger-scale Oregon article. Maybe a "Get out" connected with Tillamook? -- Bill-on-the-Hill 21:54, 16 March 2006 (EST)
    • Move to Tillamook State Forest and place current content under Sleep/Do -- Paul Richter 22:26, 16 March 2006 (EST)

Waldo lake

  • Another one of those Oregon articles. Merge with nearest city unless the lake is a destination. — Ravikiran 22:12, 14 March 2006 (EST)
  • THIS PAGE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!!! DO NOT DELETE!!! -- Creightg 23:39, 16 March 2006
  • Okay, the lake looks large enough on its own, you can camp inside it, and it looks like it is part of something called Willamette National Forest [2]. Just how big is this whole place? — Ravikiran 20:01, 16 March 2006 (EST)
  • Move to Williamette National Forest as the lake seems to be an attraction within the larger national forest. -- Ryan 00:44, 17 March 2006 (EST)
  • Where's Waldo? Ha ha ha. Sorry, I saw the name of the article and had to make the joke. Sapphire 18:52, 27 March 2006 (EST)

Swiss Army Knives

  • Someone may want to put some of this in the Switzerland article, but we don't do articles on products. -- Tom Holland (xltel) 10:12, 15 March 2006 (EST)
    • Delete. Would make a nice start for a Wikipedia article, though. Ricardo (Rmx) 22:10, 15 March 2006 (EST)
      • This page "Swiss Army Knives" should not be deleted- it is authentic information for anyone travelling to Switzerland- all tourists will see Swiss Army Knives for sale in virtually every shop- so why not have some information about them on Wikitravel. 70% of Victorinox's sale of Swiss Army Knives are from the tourist- so this page should stay. Furthermore on the main Switzerland page there is incorrect information- It states that you can no longer buy Wenger Swiss Army Knives- This is totally incorrect. The facts are- In 2005 the Wenger firm was struggling and thus was bought buy its rival Victorinox- the Wenger firm is still producing Swiss Army Knives and in all the souvenir shops there are still 2 ranges the Wenger one and the Victorinox one. Production is still seperate and both Victorinox and Wenger will be producing seperate ranges indefinately. Wikitravel- please amend the Switzerland page accordingly. Just to realliterate please dont delete the Swiss Army Knives page- the majority of tourists to Switzerland will appreciate this info. Thanks.***
        • I am sorry I will need to go along with everone else in recommending this page be deleted, but I would really like to see you add some of this information to the Switzerland page, as the infomation is valuable. Also, please feel free to plunge forward and correct any information you find that is incorrect. We value your contributions, but we have policies and guidelines on what is an article. Please stick around and contribute. Thanks. -- Tom Holland (xltel) 12:15, 16 March 2006 (EST)
  • Delete. Merge relevant info into Switzerland. -- Jonboy 11:07, 16 March 2006 (EST)
  • Delete. Keep the info, but delete the page. -- Tom Holland (xltel) 12:15, 16 March 2006 (EST)
  • I HAVE SAVED WIKITRAVEL THE TROUBLE OF DELETING MY PAGE ON SWISS ARMY KNIVES- I HAVE DELETED IT MYSELF. FURTHERMORE I HAVE DELETED MY BRIENZ PAGE AND I HAVE DELETED MY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE INTERLAKEN PAGE. NEVER AGAIN WILL I WRITE ANYTHING FOR WIKITRAVEL- I'AM APPAULED BY THE SUGGESTION MY WORK BE DELETED. WIKITRAVEL IS OBVIOUSLY NOT INDEPENDENT AND IMPARTIAL. I'M WRITING THIS FROM AN INTERNET CAFE, THUS I DONT HAVE AN E MAIL NOR PC OF MY OWN. THIS MESSAGE IS FROM AN UNHAPPY TRAVEL WRITER.*
    • Hey, so the thing is, we don't want the information deleted, we just want it on a different page. Why is that so bad? -- Mark 15:04, 16 March 2006 (EST)
  • Delete. Not an article in accordance with Wikitravel:What is an article?. Also Wikitravel:Slippery slope. -- Colin 14:49, 16 March 2006 (EST)
  • I now agree that Swiss Army Knives doesnt really fall into your criteria. I will still contribute to Wikitravel. Thanks!
    • Delete the page, but the info (or a condensed version of it) should definitely be infoboxed in Switzerland#Buy. Jpatokal 10:23, 17 March 2006 (EST)

  • Delete. A Mormon temle that is apparently in the town of Manti. Small city article should be created for Manti and the temple listed there under "See". -- Ryan 20:15, 16 March 2006 (EST)

  • Redirect to Manti. -- Tom Holland (xltel) 22:51, 17 March 2006 (EST)

East Kootenyas

  • Delete. My bad, I created this page by mistake. It is a misspelling of East Kootenays. - bulliver 20:18, 17 March 2006 (EST)
    • Just move the last good page to the correct spelling and leave the mispelling behind as a redirect. -- Tom Holland (xltel) 20:21, 17 March 2006 (EST)
      • As I said in the discussion of Mexico City/Tlalelolco, what's the point? If there's a page that clearly doesn't belong, was created in error, has no redeeming features, and just clutters up the data base, get rid of the durn thing. It won't be missed. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 23:08, 17 March 2006 (EST)
        • Also, I cannot simply rename it, as I created and added content to the real East Kootenays page as soon as I realised my error, so rename is not allowed (for me anyway). -- bulliver 00:57, 18 March 2006 (EST)

Wikitravel:Abbreviations

  • Not sure if we need this new policy, so putting it up here for discussion. -- Ryan 22:26, 17 March 2006 (EST)
  • Keep. It hasn't committed any of the "crimes" punished with death penalty. Maybe we should discuss its utility on its own discussion page first. Ricardo (Rmx) 12:56, 21 March 2006 (EST)
    • There was a comment posted on the article's discussion page to the effect of "why do we need this" immediately after the article was created, with no responses given. Policy articles aren't really covered by the deletion policy, and are normally created in response to some need for clarification. I'm not aware that anyone has ever decreed that "USA" never be written as "U.S.A.", so this strikes me as a policy without a purpose. -- Ryan 15:00, 21 March 2006 (EST)
      • On a second thought, I think you're right. Policy pages shouldn't be created out of the blue and maybe we should mention that on Wikitravel:How to start a new page (I'm raising that issue there next). I'm changing my vote here to delete then. Ricardo (Rmx) 09:48, 23 March 2006 (EST)
        • Actually, I'd like to promote an atmosphere where policy pages can be created out of the blue, and that even inexperienced users can influence our policy. There may be some good ideas that experienced Wikitravellers don't think of just because we're used to the "standard" way of doing things. I think that policies that don't meet with general approval will be removed, blanked, revised, or deleted, but I think it's a good idea to let people know that they can propose them. --Evan 10:40, 23 March 2006 (EST)
  • Keep. We probably do need a page like this to guide our friends who enjoy copy-editing. This said, I'm not into the content of the page as it stands, which seems to me to be totally arbitrary (I'm the one who left the original comment). I say we blank it, and make some kind of note to "watch this space". -- Mark 03:36, 24 March 2006 (EST)

Gullfoss

  • Apparently a waterfall in Iceland. Not sure if it is a destination or just an attraction. Currently it consists of one photograph. — Ravikiran 01:03, 18 March 2006 (EST)
  • No issues with deletion. Gullfoss is an attraction. I added this page since there was an existing uncreated link to Gullfoss on the Iceland page. The photo's been added to the Iceland page so there's no need for the Gullfoss page unless somebody wants to add the necessary extra bits. I'm a newbie - what's the normal procedure for cataloguing attractions without cluttering up the guide page with photos? Jhaddy 01:21, 18 March 2006 (EST)

Wikitravel:Disambiguation page index

  • Redirect to Wikitravel:Links to disambiguating pages. The purpose of the old page was (according to its talk page) to keep a list of "most famous" exceptions to the disambiguation rules, disambiguation pages that needed to be created, and pages that have disambiguation notices in them. "Most famous" pages can now be found by looking at what links to Template:otheruses, I've created all disambiguation pages that were listed as "need to be created", and the page didn't have a list of disambiguation pages (Wikitravel:Links to disambiguating pages does). -- Ryan 21:20, 25 March 2006 (EST)
    • I agree. — Ravikiran 13:48, 25 March 2006 (EST)

Jaigon

  • When I started this page, I spelt the name of the town incorrectly. It should be Jaigaon, so I recommend deleting this page. WindHorse 26 March 06
Ryan's suggestion: "It's close enough in spelling that a redirect should be OK to prevent others from making the same mistake - just change the article text to "REDIRECT #Jaigaon" and all should be well. -- Ryan 03:21, 26 March 2006 (EST)"

I have added the redirect as suggested, but will leave the vdf marker to see what others think. WindHorse 26 March 06

  • Redirect to Beaufort. This is a close one. Some quick googling reveals that you can sleep there, at the Osprey Inn, but only if you are active or retired military. I could imagine that it would be useful to have the redirect for family members of US Marines looking for info, who might not know that Beaufort is the nearest city. (Which I didn't until aforementioned googling.) -- Jonboy 13:36, 28 March 2006 (EST)
