The Travellers' pub is the place to ask questions when you're confused, lost, afraid, tired, annoyed, thoughtful, or helpful. Please check the FAQ and Help page before asking a question, though, since that may save your time and others'.

Please add new questions at the bottom of the page and sign your post by appending four tildes (~~~~) to it, but otherwise plunge forward!

Pages Currently Under Evaluation

Heads up that as of 4/18/18, we're currently putting pages about Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market, Wat Chan, and Dusun Glondok under evaluation as we're working on determining if it adheres to the site's policies and guidelines and style. If anyone has any thoughts or know anything about these sights and destinations, please reply down below here. Would love to make this a collaborative effort on Wikitravel! IB hill (talk) 19:27, 18 April 2018 (EDT)IB_Hill

Hi! The first two of these three appear to be Thai, but I cannot find them on Wikitravel! The third is in Indonesia and I can find it. Can you please give me more info about these above two? If they are Thai, I should be able to resolve it.Avemario (talk) 03:48, 19 April 2018 (EDT)
I can´t find the first two mentioned articles, but my first thought would be that a market should not have its own article. It can be described in the article of where it is located. Dusun Glondok I can´t find much information about online, it seems to be a little village? The writer of the article should specify where exactly it is and if there are any tourist attractions so more information can be added or rewritten. Adzas (talk) 09:48, 19 April 2018 (EDT)
update - I found the floating market info, on Tamonwan user page. I removed the first paragraph as this was copied from another website and I removed the external links for now. For the rest I would move the original info to a location article and then remove it from the user page. Adzas (talk) 09:57, 19 April 2018 (EDT)
Hello hello! I realized I left my computer without adding the pages. The Thai content about Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market and Wat Chan are posted on Tamonwan user page and on Jeechnps user page. I'm curious to know what you guys think about the content and how we could better blend the info with the site. Seems like you're a Thai expert, Avemario! If you get the chance, maybe you can check it out? IB hill (talk) 11:55, 19 April 2018 (EDT)IB_Hill
The Floating Market is in Thonburi in Bangkok, and is already listed there. I have updated the opening hours, but (personally) I do not ::::think that we need all the info that the Tamonwan page provides.
After all, do we need a travel website, or a multi page book for each destination?
I think that too much info on a place tends to be a distraction from the rest of the area. As it is, if someone wants to go there, if they ::::are in a hotel nearby, or go to a Travel Agent, they will get all the detailed stuff and can make their choice.
We do not need Wikitravel "overcrowded".
And the same with Wat Chan, which is a Buddhist Temple (Wat) in Ban Chan (Chan Town)
This is in Chiang Mai Province, some 150Km North West towards Pai (which is on Wikitravel).
Chiang Mai has many attractions, and we need again to be careful we do not make the attraction into a book!
It seems from what I can read online that this place has only one decent hotel, run by Karen (Christian refugees from Myanmar, so it is an ::::out of the way place to get involved in this culture. There is transport to here from Chiang Mai in yellow songteows apparently (2 bench ::::pickup trucks).
It seems that there are also minibuses from both Chiang Mai, and Pai.
I would be inclined to only put a short article on the Chiang Mai website, just describing what it is, that there is a hotel, and how to ::::get there.Avemario (talk) 06:41, 20 April 2018 (EDT)
Hey Avemario! Appreciate you taking the time to have a deeper look and thanks for adding the floating market in Thonburi on the Bangkok/Thonburi page. And completely agree with your suggestions. I'll have a look on their pages again and see what I can do. Thanks! IB hill (talk) 12:04, 20 April 2018 (EDT)IB_Hill
Above is very helpful, great as always Avemario! I do think it is important to find out why those users are adding all this info on their user pages. As mentioned, we have had school projects before, we used to let them work on their user pages as long as all that info is moved or removed in a short period of time, either to an existing article or a new article. If the users in question don´t communicate with us and the info is not according to our guidelines (either an article already exists or the info does not justify an article etc) we should move/remove it as soon as possible. As the Travellers Pub still does not seem to appear in Recent Changes, new users may not see our discussion, so we should check on their talk pages (the messages I left so far no reaction yet as far as I can see). Great though, I´ve learnt a lot about those locations in the past days, that´s what it is all about I think. Adzas (talk) 06:34, 21 April 2018 (EDT)

Nong Prue

I have noticed an article about this place in Kanchanaburi Province in Thailand. The information is minimal, and a VERY thorough check of the internet shows virtually no information at all worthy of tourists.Personally, I would delete the article.Avemario (talk) 06:53, 21 April 2018 (EDT)

And I just had a really serious look at it,and found virtually nothing at all on the internet, other that there is also a Nong Prue in Pattaya. :I still think it needs deleting - there is little info justifying moving it to the Kanchanaburi page.Avemario (talk) 07:59, 22 April 2018 (EDT)
And as much as I hate being the pain in the arse which I am - I just noticed an article on Jom Jang, which is in Nong Khai Province in ::Thailand.There is virtually no info in this article, which was added many years ago, and it is only a few Km from Nong Khai City.I think it ::should be deleted, and the info moved to the Nong Khai page.Avemario (talk) 06:18, 23 April 2018 (EDT)
And yet again......................... Ban Rong in Lamphang Province has absolutely no info about the place. So why not remove it Avemario (talk) 07:04, 23 April 2018 (EDT)
Once more................ Ban Muang Kut is a place put in by advertisers who want to promote the place. Not wanted on Wikitravel.
The trip should be a place to go on the Chiang Mai page. Avemario (talk) 07:04, 23 April 2018 (EDT)
Hey Avemario! Thanks for bringing this up- truly appreciate your Thai knowledge! I will have a look over it and see if there's a place for all the articles you just mentioned. If anyone else has any suggestions, please post it here!IB hill (talk) 12:13, 26 April 2018 (EDT)IB_Hill
We always say that any location that can be visited by a traveller, no matter how remote, can be listed here. Jom Jang for example, maybe a small place but the article does have some content, for the off the beaten path traveller maybe worth to visit after reading the little information that we have there. It is even mentioned in the Nong Khai article. I would leave this for sure. Ban Rong I can´t find an article for. Completely empty articles I would remove yes, but other places maybe we can promote on the Main Page, ask for help so editors who know the location can add info. The smallest unknown places can be the most beautiful or interesting places to explore. Adzas (talk) 10:04, 24 April 2018 (EDT)
Hi Adzas!
Thanx for your feedback!
But I still stick by with what I have written. I have never heard of any of these places I posted until I did a detailed search (and I know that I can find many more similar ones - I just did not want to overload!)And as you are aware, I know Thailand thoroughly, having visited virtually every Province! (and still do to keep things up to date)
If I (or most other persons want to see what is in Thailand, we visit the Provincial City page - after all, the Capital of the Province has the same name as the Province. And we read the "do" or other pages.
If the destination is "big" as Hua Hin is in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, and Koh Samui in Surat Thani Province, then of course they need a separate article.
But these small places need to be in the Provincial (City) article I think, as many more people will get to read about them.
And Muang Kut, which is an elephant place should really be moved to Chiang Mai, as there are several elephant places already there.
And also, I now cannot find Ban Rong. Maybe Management removed it, but it is not in the Province page. Avemario (talk) 03:54, 25 April 2018 (EDT)
Hello again! Apologies for the delayed response about this- I got tied up and just got to looking over this. Totally understand your point, Avemario. It was the same for me when I did a search about these places- there wasn't too much info and I had to do some serious digging. For Ban Muang Kut, I agree it should be moved to Chiang Mai as the information on that page can easily be added in the "Do" section and "Elephants". As for Jom Jang and Nong Prue, I feel like there's a bit of a grey area with these place even though they are significantly a lot smaller. For Jom Jang, the village has a uniqueness with its population being mostly local women farmers and community project. For Nong Prue, I'm torn between just adding the information to the Kanchanaburi page or leave it as it's own because it quite a distance away from the province and it could have some potential. But you're right about how the information is too minimal. I also can't find Ban Rong either so I'm not sure if that page got deleted. Love these discussions! IB hill (talk) 16:49, 26 April 2018 (EDT)IB_Hill
And once more................ Hellfire Pass is 72Km out of Kanchanaburi, Srinakarin Dam is 54Km, and these are just two places distant from Kanchanaburi City which are listed in the Kanchanaburi article. Nong Prue is quite close to Srinakarin Dam. (Do not confuse it with the Nong Prue in Pattaya (Chon Buri Province), which is some 250Km to the south)

So again, I think it should be moved.Avemario (talk) 19:10, 26 April 2018 (EDT)

(and again, remember that the name of the Province is the same as that of the Capital City of the Province, so these places above are within Kanchanaburi Province!(same as England, where the Capital of Derbyshire is Derby, of Yorkshire is York etc).Avemario (talk) 05:48, 27 April 2018 (EDT)

Hyphen/dash formatting

Just wanted to check, since I couldn't find this in Wikitravel policy: it's considered best to use an mdash (that is, "—") instead of "-" or "--", right? Just wanted to check because I have been changing hyphens to mdahes in a couple articles. For example, see this link [1] to see what I mean by this. -- Selfie City (talk) 15:17, 22 August 2018 (EDT)

Hey Selfie City! So sorry for the delayed response... I thought I replied! I think your judgement is correct as I took a look at some of our star articles and they all have "&mdash". I'm assuming people might have forgotten about the style over time but it's always good to bring it back :) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IB hill (talkcontribs)
Thanks. It's not the biggest formatting issue in the world but still one that I'll do in future for articles that are DOTMs, etc. -- Selfie City (talk) 11:54, 29 August 2018 (EDT)

Technical Issues with logging in

Hi everyone. There is a current issue with users not being able to log in. Just wanted to announce that we are well aware of it and will take care of it ASAP. Apologies for any inconveniences. 09:47, 23 August 2018 (EDT)IB_Hill

The issue has been fixed. Thanks for your patience! IB hill (talk) 13:55, 23 August 2018 (EDT)
I never even had a problem! :) Thanks for mentioning this anyway, though. -- Selfie City (talk) 14:53, 23 August 2018 (EDT)

Main page overlap

I've noticed for quite a while now that the travel news, phrasebook/picture of the month, and the DOTM slideshow all overlap over each other. I should have mentioned this earlier. -- Selfie City (talk) 12:40, 31 August 2018 (EDT)

Hey Selfie City!
We are well aware of this issue and have been in contact with the tech team to work on it. Can you let me know what browser and operating :system you're using? For my computer, it's only the "Language Of the Month" picture bleeding into the "Destination of the Month". IB hill (talk) 12:52, 31 August 2018 (EDT)
I'm using Chrome as the browser and Windows 10. -- Selfie City (talk) 13:11, 31 August 2018 (EDT)
Hmm good to know. If you can, please send over screenshots to [email protected](dot)com. Would appreciate if I can get a better understanding of what you're seeing. Thanks! IB hill (talk) 13:14, 31 August 2018 (EDT)
Could I perhaps upload the screenshot to this website? -- Selfie City (talk) 15:41, 31 August 2018 (EDT)
I'm also using Chrome and Windows 10 but I don't see anything unusual on my screen? Adzas (talk) 05:37, 1 September 2018 (EDT)
It's looking okay at the moment for me, and I'm using the same platform as I was earlier and that Adzas used, so it seems to be fixed. -- Selfie City (talk) 21:06, 3 December 2018 (EST)

Vote for October 2018 Homepage

Halloween month is less than two weeks away! We had Sighisoara, Transylvania, and Bran mentioned already. Does anyone have any other suggestions they want to see on the homepage for October 2018? IB hill (talk) 18:00, 18 September 2018 (EDT)

I think these are really good options! But I'll think about some other places just to have some more ideas... if we want to have some weird, eerie place for Halloween, have you ever heard about the "Park of the monsters" in Bomarzo, Italy? GiulioC (talk) 04:00, 20 September 2018 (EDT)
I still like the idea of Transylvania. Maybe the Castle in Bran as the Landmark of the month, and Giulio's “Park of monsters” sounds like a great OBP destination, it is something new, I’ve never heard of it. Adzas (talk) 03:52, 21 September 2018 (EDT)
In all, there are about six different ones, right? There’s also cuisine and language. Apart from pumpkins, I can’t think of much related to October 31 in those fields. So what should we do with those? -- Selfie City (talk) 14:38, 22 September 2018 (EDT)
Those place are all very nice, but I still hope to see Jiuzhaigou [2], maybe as the OBP of this month? I've been there in an October holiday. Really nice at this time of the year, the view, the weather. Enjoy this beautiful season! Cheers! --Binbin (talk) 23:52, 22 September 2018 (EDT)
Mahbe Jiuzhaigou as the DOTM and Bran as the OTBP? But what I’m worried about with the one in China is this: if we’ve got it up until November on the page, won’t it be really cold there? Especially since we need to allow people 4 to 6 weeks to allow people to plan a trip to the place. Maybe somewhere tropical, subtropical, or northern hemisphere low elevation desert would be a good choice for one of the featured destinations. I’m not recommending these, but just some we could fall back on at any time in winter if we wanted to: Everglades National Park and Gibraltar. Gibraltar could be a DOTM, OTBP, or a landmark, by the way. -- Selfie City (talk) 23:01, 23 September 2018 (EDT)
You've certainly got a point about the temperature. Gibraltar as OTBP sounds fine. --Binbin (talk) 04:43, 24 September 2018 (EDT)
Maybe we need to look at those destinations in a “wider perspective”. Not everyone wants a warm destination, some love the cold. Not everyone needs a lot of time to plan, maybe someone is already travelling in for example China and can quickly decide to go to a destination nearby. But for sure we need to keep the options diverse, so DOM and OBP in different parts of the world would be great. As we wanted to create some Halloween atmosphere, there must be other nice destinations. What about Mexico where they celebrate the Day of the Dead, or I read something about Sleepy Hollow and its old Manor House that sounds quite cool for the Halloween holidays in October. Just some thoughts... Adzas (talk) 12:17, 24 September 2018 (EDT)
Apologies for the delay response- I was out of town but thanks for sharing, everyone! You all gave great suggestions. Perhaps we can do a combination of a fall and Halloween theme? Maybe Mexico as DOTM in honor of Day of the Dead + you can visit in the fall. And for OTBP, Bomarzo to highlight the "Park of Monsters" and Bran for Landmark of the Mark to tie with the Halloween theme. For cuisine and language, we can do Romanian since that's where Transylvania is located? We can save Everglades National Park, Gibraltar, and Jiuzhaigou for next month or the future. I think they group better together as they seem to be more nature focused. IB hill (talk)
Combining two themes is fine for me. If we choose Bomarzo I'll take care of the page and add some info. GiulioC (talk) 04:49, 27 September 2018 (EDT)
I think I’d go along with IB hill’s suggestions. But should perhaps Bomarzo be Landmark and Bran be OTBP? Just a thought. Also, is there a particular place in Mexico known for Day of the Dead? If so, maybe we could get a little more specific with our DOTM pick. Overall this will be a unique month — some interesting places! -- Selfie City (talk) 20:37, 28 September 2018 (EDT)
Great suggestions, Selfie City! It definitely makes more sense to make Bran as OTBP and Bomarzo as Landmark of the Month. I chose Mexico City for Day of the Dead as there is a snippet about it in that article. Homepage has been updated and thanks everyone for contributing!
Yep. We now have a couple weeks of peace! :) -- Selfie City (talk) 18:45, 1 October 2018 (EDT)

Vote for November 2018 Homepage

November homepage voting is now open! I think based on our last conversation, we were thinking about Everglades National Park, Gibraltar, and Jiuzhaigou as they all fit with the fall season? Does anyone have any other thoughts and suggestions? Please let us know! IB hill (talk) 18:11, 15 October 2018 (EDT)

They all look good to me. I'm already sick of autumn, so I'd choose places with mild weather...GiulioC (talk) 11:16, 16 October 2018 (EDT)
As we usually also try to plan a few months ahead, should we also not start thinking about the winter season? What about a great location with the Northern Lights (sorry, I talk about this all the time, just so amazing to see this....). Iceland or Finland maybe? Or one winter location and one milder location? Adzas (talk) 12:28, 16 October 2018 (EDT)
Yes. In the Northern Hemisphere, winter will have begun by November in many places. -- Selfie City (talk) 00:36, 18 October 2018 (EDT)
We can start thinking about the winter season! Which winter and mild location do you guys prefer? IB hill (talk) 17:56, 18 October 2018 (EDT)
Ok, what about Mývatn for OBP destination (or DOM)? It is located in the Northern part of Iceland, where apparently it is best to see the Northern lights, and this location article has content and looks really interesting. As Landmark a picture of the Northern Lights in Iceland? For someone who prefers a sunny destination, Cartagena (Colombia)? I have been there long time ago, interesting place for sure. I will think of other options. Adzas (talk) 04:38, 27 October 2018 (EDT)
Any place in Iceland or Lapland looks good for Northern Lights, also there are many places in Norway such as Tromsø. Mild locations: I like Adzas idea of Cartagena (Colombia). GiulioC (talk) 09:29, 28 October 2018 (EDT)
Ooh, those are good ideas. Would Cartagena (Colombia) be DOM or OBP? Trying to think about how we can group everything together so it makes sense? IB hill (talk) 14:28, 29 October 2018 (EDT)
If we pick Northern Lights as our main focus I would say a location there as DOM and then Cartagena as OBP....Adzas (talk) 06:02, 30 October 2018 (EDT)
Yes! Let's go with Northern Lights and Cartagena OBP. Landmark, Cuisine, Language of the month? I'd choose a Scandinavian language and may be the Blue Lagoon as landmark? Don't know about the cuisine though... GiulioC (talk) 11:00, 31 October 2018 (EDT)

Dates for pricing

Hi everyone,

I've long used Wikitravel but only now have gotten around to trying to contribute myself. A frequent annoyance of mine as a user is when I read a price for a given hotel, activity, etc. but there is no way to discern when that price was valid. I greatly appreciate it when there is a date just afterward so that I can know if I'm then being ripped off with a higher price, need to practice my haggling, or need to accept that five years later the price is going to be higher.

I recently updated some prices on a page with dates and they were immediately deleted by another user citing the guidelines (I apologize for having changed it back at first - I had checked the guidelines but under 'Accommodation Listings' and 'Price' under 'Listings' without seeing 'When to use dates' >_>*). This surprised me as it is such an important detail for a website like this. Travel guides traditionally were published with the year right in the title: you knew when the information was valid and could respond accordingly. The guidelines acknowledge that "The reality is that it can take a while for some destinations to be revisited and for the information to be updated in the guide. Meanwhile, knowing whether information is current or dated can be very useful to our readers. We need to find a balance between adding a date to all facts and maintaining an uncluttered travel guide", but then errs on the side of less 'clutter'. Why is this very useful detail considered clutter when others that could be considered less useful are not?

I feel that this compromise ignores the reality of being a web-based, date-free travel guide. It asks users to assume that prices (and schedules for that matter) are current and up to date. For some busy pages that may do but I've had experience after experience over the last year travelling and extensively using Wikitravel where the absence of this detail and then the inaccuracy of the information was only motivation to find a website more regularly updated. Knowing when information was valid is important and something that is not otherwise indicated. It is a nice thought on the guidelines' part that "When a price changes, we update the guide without retaining any previous pricing information", but that requires that a user who also contributes be made aware of the price change and then actually make the edit: the plethora of years expired prices calcifying pages across the site stand as testament to the inadequacy of relying solely on the prompt fulfillment of this expectation.

What finally motivated me to begin contributing myself was a conversation I had with a Couchsurfing host and his traveller friend a couple of weeks back. They said they had basically stopped using Wikitravel because they couldn't trust the information: they would read prices and details and discover them to be quite different. Reconsidering this guideline would at least provide some transparency so that users can know how much confidence to put into particular details.

Movethathoof (talk) 12:54, 18 October 2018 (EDT)

Hey Movethathoof! Thanks for taking the time to write out all your thoughts. You bring up valid points about why dates should be added and I do agree with how some info are outdated. Let me talk with our team and see if they have any thoughts and I'll see what we can do in terms of amending the guidelines. We appreciate you taking the time to bring this to our attention. If there's any changes that should be made to specific listings to update them, please feel free to make the edits- I'm sure readers will appreciate it too! IB hill (talk) 15:16, 18 October 2018 (EDT)
Although I also agree that it could be handy to see a date behind a price, the guide gets outdated very quickly, especially if you see price info from years ago, it just does not look good. In the history of an article it can be seen when an article was last updated, so this could help. Maybe instead of having all those dates in the articles (that I have been removing as per our guidelines, maybe it is a thought to drop a quick line on the talk page of an article to say that certain prices were updated. Adzas (talk) 04:37, 19 October 2018 (EDT)
I’m entirely sympathetic to both the argument that it doesn’t look good and gets out dated quickly, but feel that both put editors’ needs ahead of users. As a user I care far more about knowing the usefulness of a piece of information than the overall aesthetic appeal of a page - I don’t see why a site that is meant to help people should so value its appearance over its usefulness. And the prices do get out of date quickly, but they are out of date whether the date is there or not. The difference is that it becomes a lie by omission without the date, one that is frustrating and makes the site far less useful.
And sure, I thought as much that one could announce on or dig around the talk page to find the edit, but are we really expecting that of a common or casual user? That someone for whom the page appears in a search result is going to think to check that? That they will know to? And we add this obstacle to reasonable use...because /we/ want the page to ‘look nicer’?
Sounds like a strange set of priorities to me... Movethathoof (talk) 07:11, 19 October 2018 (EDT)
You're all bringing valid points to the discussion. I've always followed our guidelines and removed dates but I do believe we should try to find a solution. I don't mind having dates on the article even if it gets outdated quickly, but I don't think that leaving a message on an article's talk page is the best thing to do: an occasional user might only want to look for hotels or other info on the article and skip the talk page. I need to think more about it. GiulioC (talk) 09:56, 19 October 2018 (EDT)
Yes, let’s also see what others have to say. Just for the record, my comments above are also from a users perspective, not just as an editor. I personally won’t look at an article if I see lots of dates like 2012, 2013 etc, as that is what happens when those dates are not updated on a regular basis. That is the reason for my comment, not just because it is part of our policy. For sure policies can be changed, but it also has to make sense. The talk page is not ideal, just a thought as part of the brainstorming. Adzas (talk) 11:28, 19 October 2018 (EDT)
As someone still very new to editing the website I can’t say if there is a better way to address this issue, but I think the thought process above is quite illustrative. I can understand not looking at a page with lots of dates from 2012 or such, but not having the date doesn’t change how outdated those details are. Instead the user can’t even make that choice, has to make the assumption they’re accurate when they’re not, and then is left with a bad impression of the website when they are proved false. Personally I feel that having a user know there are pages with details that are out of date is better than the impression that nothing on the website can be trusted. Movethathoof (talk) 09:06, 22 October 2018 (EDT)
"having a user know there are pages with details that are out of date is better than the impression that nothing on the website can be trusted", and that's another strong point in my opinion. Here's another thought: instead of having dates added everywhere what bout having a banner at the beginning of the Eat/Drink/Sleep/whatever section? Just like the templates we use when articles need some attention. A simple banner to add saying "please note that some of the prices shown may be out of date" or something like that. GiulioC (talk) 10:29, 22 October 2018 (EDT)
I was thinking something similar, either a general comment at the sections, or at the bottom of the article (to avoid multiple messages), why not include a note in the template that we use there for usuable article, outline article etc, add a note to say that as prices may change quicker than they are updated here, prices should be seen as just a guideline or something like that.Adzas (talk) 11:18, 22 October 2018 (EDT)
In one regard it is better than nothing, to at least say “don’t trust this website”, but in another how much of a guideline is a price over five years old? For me the issue remains that the context is minimal - is it a guideline I can put trust in, or should I just seek a travel blog that was more recently updated? Or after page after page of faulty prices about which the editors refuse to give me all of the details about am I just going to stop checking the website like recent host and his friend? This would do nothing to assuage their frustration.
I don’t mean to be obdurate but the information becomes out of date and I don’t see why acknowledging this reality, when to the benefit of the user, has to be resisted - it is always going to be the reality for a site like this. What are the reasons besides ‘it doesn’t look nice’? Movethathoof (talk) 11:31, 22 October 2018 (EDT)
Hey Movethathoof! I think for now we need to stick with the current guidelines just because we want to encourage people to constantly update the pages as the site is user-generated. We appreciate you making the effort to address this and recognize your concerns. But for now, I think we need to take more time to think about this internally as this has been part of our guidelines since the site has launched. Hope you understand and hope to see you making useful edits! IB hill (talk) 17:45, 22 October 2018 (EDT)
Could you perhaps explain this reasoning more? I don’t myself see why having the dates would discourage updating - if anything, seeing their date and if the case is that they need updating should encourage them to be updated. Otherwise, again, if there’s no date, the assumption we’re asked to make is that they’re already current - we can’t know they need updating if there is no date. So I don’t really understand the relation you draw there. Movethathoof (talk) 21:55, 22 October 2018 (EDT)
Should I assume then that I will not be answered and this will not be addressed? Or when you reference taking time to think about this internally, is there some accountability as to what that means, when that 'time' would refer to? Movethathoof (talk) 19:18, 29 October 2018 (EDT)
Hi everyone, nearly a couple of months have now passed, any movement on this? I asked for some parameter regarding how much time was needed to "take more time to think about this internally" but without an answer I figure that two months might be enough to have had a couple of discussions on the matter? Myself, I still don't quite understand the reasoning behind this, both as I responded above (that this is a bad way to encourage people to be constantly updating, as without a date there is no way for an editing user to even know if a price needs updating) and as well as I think would be a fairly clear response to the statement that "this has been part of our guidelines since the site launched", seeing as this issue could not have presented itself until the site has been around for a number of years and is caked with inaccuracies that this guideline actively works to keep hidden from common user as editing user alike, as is now the case. Is this at the point where I should start a "request for comment"? Movethathoof (talk) 16:06, 15 December 2018 (EST)

Updating a Map

Hi all,

On the Japan page the Shinkansen Map is over 7½ years old and terribly out of date - and hence misleading. As far as creative rights go, according to what I am reading, I think I can add some updated info on it. I am no graphics wizard, but I have enough ability to update it - but before I start spending some time doing that, I want to make sure it would be accepted. —The preceding comment was added by The-observer (talkcontribs)

If it's not against our policies and you can do it, it will be really appreciated! GiulioC (talk) 03:24, 18 November 2018 (EST)
Inkscape is the program used, right? -- Selfie City (talk) 12:29, 18 November 2018 (EST)

OK...I made the needed changes. So now what? I read there has to be 2 weeks for user input? For the program, it was not Inkscape. —The preceding comment was added by The-observer (talkcontribs)

Can you give us a link about the changes you made? GiulioC (talk) 10:29, 20 November 2018 (EST)
Yes, though I'm having trouble putting in a link here. Try —The preceding comment was added by The-observer (talkcontribs)
Well, I think it's ok. Let's see if anyone has something to say, then it'd be great to have it uploaded on Wikitravel Shared. Another thing: please remember to sign your comments with ~~~~ . Thanks, GiulioC (talk) 11:29, 22 November 2018 (EST)
OK...not a problem. How much time should we wait, and what is the procedure after uploading it? Thanks. ~~~~ —The preceding comment was added by The-observer (talkcontribs)
The four tildes ( ~~~~ ) are found below the editing field, beside "Sign your name". Just click on them and they'll be automatically added. As for the picture: it must be uploaded on Wikitravel Shared, this way it can be used on every Wikitravel site. You can use our Upload Wizard. Please remember to follow our Image Policy. Vote for December 2018 Homepage

December is coming! Winter is coming (hopefully not in the "Game-of-Thrones-fashioned way" if you know what I mean...)! So it's time to choose new locations to feature on the Homepage. Please share your thoughts. GiulioC (talk) 03:31, 18 November 2018 (EST)

It's getting real cold in our northern hemisphere, so I guess for the destination of the month, we should either pick a real warmer place like Sydney, Sanya, or real cold places such as Rovaniemi (hometown of the Santa). For off the beaten path, I really like Windhoek (and Namibia is really a nice country to have your holidays too). Cheers! --Binbin (talk) 08:15, 18 November 2018 (EST)
Let's go to Santa's home! It is on my list to do, would love to go there in wintertime! For off the beaten path, I like your ideas Binbin. What about Sossusvlei, a friend of mine worked there and shared some pictures a while ago, looks amazing! Maybe the Afrikaans phrasebook as language of the month then. Will have to think about the Landmark of the month. Adzas (talk) 11:31, 18 November 2018 (EST)
I like User:Binbin’s ideas. -- Selfie City (talk) 12:28, 18 November 2018 (EST)
Santa's home looks like the perfect choice as well as places around Namibia. What about a scandinavian landmark? GiulioC (talk) 10:46, 20 November 2018 (EST)
Could Jan Mayen perhaps fit in that category? The problem with Jan Mayen is that the article doesn't have much content. -- Selfie City (talk) 18:15, 20 November 2018 (EST)
Wow, Jan Mayen looks really Off The Beaten Path! But I think we should choose a place a little easier to reach...or not? Any thoughts? GiulioC (talk) 11:36, 22 November 2018 (EST)
I think it would be a good place to write about, but Jan Mayen has — literally — about one sentence in each section, and I doubt that there is anyone on the website who could expand the article. Svalbard (often associated with Jan Mayen) was an OTBP in the past, and in Svalbard there is a good Longyearbyen article that is good enough for being on the homoe page — however, it is so cold that I'm not sure if enough people would want to visit it to make posting it on the home page worthwhile. -- Selfie City (talk) 14:05, 22 November 2018 (EST)
Although it looks amazing, there is no place to sleep or eat in Jan Mayen, Longyearbyen would be better then I think. I still like Binbin´s ideas though. What about Nordkapp as landmark, following Giulio's suggestion, something in Scandinavia?Adzas (talk) 15:44, 22 November 2018 (EST)
Scandinavia has many interesting places: natural sites such as the Preikestolen in Norway near Stavanger, but also men-made landmarks such as buildings like the Turning Torso in Malmö or the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi. GiulioC (talk) 11:24, 24 November 2018 (EST)
So, what are we going to do? Rovaniemi as DOM, Windhoek or Namibia as OTBP, Afrikaans Phrasebook and Nordkapp (or other scandinavian place) as landmark? GiulioC (talk) 09:02, 29 November 2018 (EST)
It works for me. :-). --Binbin (talk) 03:03, 30 November 2018 (EST)

Looks like a fairly good set of choices overall -- Selfie City (talk) 21:07, 3 December 2018 (EST)

Creating a page for towns with historical center in Italy

I would like to know if I might be able to create a page listing towns with a historic center in Italy. While living abroad in different countries I was always wondering which towns around my area, even the tiny ones, had a historic center. In order to get this info i had to go through several internet sites and google maps. This might be useful for someone who is living in a certain city for a longer period, or visiting a place and wanting to discover small non-too-touristy places. I know that there are many of such towns in Italy but they are still not the totatily and it would be different from listing all towns in Italy. If I could proceed, I was then wondering where should I create such a page. If to create a full one of its own with the subsections including the Regions, provinces etc or if to create separate pages for each region, province etc. Oztom (talk) 04:57, 19 November 2018 (EST)

This might be one of our itineraries or a travel topic. I don't know if I'd make a list of all Italy's cities with a historic center (that is, most of them have a historic center, so which ones would you choose?), maybe the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy can help. GiulioC (talk) 10:36, 20 November 2018 (EST)
I understand they would be many but still not the totality and it would be maybe a useful database to know which ones have a historical center and which ones are just modern or possess a random landmark (church etc). For example in the province I live in (Vicenza) of the first 10 comuni, only 1 possesses a somewhat historical center: Arzignano (Asiago could be considered a reconstructed center). Other regions of course would have more (ex: Abruzzo) but still not the totality. The idead of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy list could be also nice to add. Thank you for your suggestion. Oztom (talk) 03:21, 22 November 2018 (EST)
Being Italian and living in Veneto I know there are many places around Vicenza, for some of them we don't even have articles yet (you may want to check Vicenza (province)). It'd be great to create those articles and also expand those already existing. As for the list let's wait for other suggestions. GiulioC (talk) 11:34, 22 November 2018 (EST)
True, in fact I remember when I first created the Vicenza province page 3 years ago I was even thinking of adding more stuff but then one thing and another led me to ditch the project. I will try to find some time in the near future to do so hopefully :) I will then await suggestions regarding the topic of the list. Thanks Oztom (talk) 04:13, 23 November 2018 (EST)
A while ago I created Bassano page and added some content on Marostica but there's still a lot to write about. GiulioC (talk) 11:06, 23 November 2018 (EST)
It sounds nice to have a list, but if we then start to create lists for other countries as well, do we want that? Why not use the Get out section more for this, if you are in a location then all you need to do is look at that section to find out if there are any interesting locations nearby, you can specify there more about if a location has a historic center or not. Just my thought, as we usually try to avoid long lists in our articles. Adzas (talk) 04:19, 24 November 2018 (EST)
I don't like lists, and I agree with Adzas that using the Get out section would be better. But creating an itinerary page about some specific places in Italy would be a good idea as well. Problem is that the amount of things and places to see anywhere in Italy will also lead to huge lists, I could name dozens of almost unknown places for my province/region only, let alone the rest of the country. Vote on the January 2019 homepage

That time's coming in about two weeks, when we have to decide on the homepage for 2019. We probably need a few extra days to vote for this month because we'll soon be (if we're not already) distracted with Christmas. I considered Windhoek and Cape Town but it's probably hot in those places currently — especially Windhoek. Maybe some tropical regions, or even high elevations? -- Selfie City (talk) 20:10, 16 December 2018 (EST)

Or what about On the trail of Marco Polo? While it's too cold probably now, that would give people time to plan for doing at least part of the journey in spring or early summer. -- Selfie City (talk) 20:37, 16 December 2018 (EST)
I didn't remember that On the trail of Marco Polo page, I think this may give us some ideas for the Off The Beaten Path location. I still like the idea of Windhoek and Namibia: it may be too hot now but if you're planning to go there by spring it should be fine. GiulioC (talk) 06:10, 18 December 2018 (EST)
Yeah, sure good point. I don't know much about the climate of Namibia, other than it's a desert, although there's a mountain range of some sort around the capital city, right? -- Selfie City (talk) 22:07, 18 December 2018 (EST)
Yes, we talked about Namibia before. Reading about it it sounds like it is a year round destination. On our Dutch version I featured Sossusvlei a few times, looks amazing! We could also pick a landmark in Namibia, just reading about Hoba meteorite, looks amazing! Adzas (talk) 07:44, 27 December 2018 (EST)
Sure — we've only got a few days now, so we should probably get going on this month's choices. For cuisine, perhaps Bavarian cuisine — have we done that yet? -- Selfie City (talk) 12:17, 27 December 2018 (EST)
So, Namibia as DOM, On the trail of Marco Polo or one of the places mentioned in it as OTBP. I like the Hoba meteorite as Landmark. I don't remember having the Bavarian cuisine featuring on the homepage, maybe this is the right time? GiulioC (talk) 09:08, 28 December 2018 (EST)
I thought about that, and the timing doesn't seem terrible, but not the best either, now I really come to think about it. Any other thoughts? And what about the language of the month? -- Selfie City (talk) 07:29, 29 December 2018 (EST)
When will these go on the homepage, though? We're on the third of January now. Just wondering. -- Selfie City (talk) 08:55, 3 January 2019 (EST)
I started to put the DOM and Landmark earlier, but there was a glitch with the picture display, so I am sure it will be there later. Adzas (talk) 09:10, 3 January 2019 (EST)
Oh, okay. -- Selfie City (talk) 14:00, 3 January 2019 (EST)

turkish wikitravel

I would like to create a turkish language page for ukraine travel. How should I go about this? Nervusvagus (talk) 03:22, 14 January 2019 (EST)

Hi, thank you for your interest. But unfortunately, we don't have Turkish version of Wikitravel, yet. Maybe we will have Turkish version someday, but before that day comes you will be most welcome to contribute here or on any other 19 language versions of Wikitravel (you can access them from the lower left side of the Main Page). Vote for February 2019 homepage

It's almost time to update our homepage, please share your ideas! Sometimes throughout the year I'd like to have Matera in Italy and/or Plovdiv in Bulgaria as they are European Capital of Culture for 2019, but I'll think about some other destinations. GiulioC (talk) 09:22, 24 January 2019 (EST)

I like the idea of Plovdiv. Do we generally choose warm destinations in (northern hemisphere) winter, and cooler in summer? IBobi (talk) 13:19, 25 January 2019 (EST)
We do generally consider weather as a key factor except for December (Christmas season). For Destination of the Month of February, can we consider Hong Kong or Shanghai as the biggest holiday of the year (Chinese New Year) for all Chinese community is on February 5th and millions of people around the world will go there at this time for their holidays. --Binbin (talk) 03:39, 26 January 2019 (EST)
I like the choices so far. Plovdiv is a nice long article, while Matera is okay but the article doesn't have much (or any) content in some sections. The picture at the top of the Plovdiv page is really good, and looks nice and warm which is probably a good thing considering the time of year. Generally, Plovdiv's weather looks fairly good, although as of January 26 there seem to be some concerns. Just a little research, you know. -- Selfie City (talk) 14:28, 26 January 2019 (EST)
I like above ideas. I don't think it is always necessary to keep the weather in mind, not everyone wants a 'warm' holiday, they go for culture or other reasons, rain or shine. If we go for Plovdiv we could do Bulgarian cuisine maybe? Can we choose a landmark in Hong Kong or Shanghai that maybe highlights the Chinese New Year celebrations?Adzas (talk) 05:25, 27 January 2019 (EST)
I think we already did Bulgarian cuisine, but I could be wrong. -- Selfie City (talk) 10:45, 27 January 2019 (EST)
Or maybe not — it's a red link! -- Selfie City (talk) 10:45, 27 January 2019 (EST)
Hong Kong has a lot of celebration events such as new year parade, fireworks display, etc. --Binbin (talk) 01:15, 28 January 2019 (EST)
I think that Matera article could be improved for the next months (I'll do some research). It'd be a good DOM or OTBP since it's one of the most overlooked places in Italy. I like the Chinese New Year theme, I'd choose Shanghai since Hong Kong has already been chosen in the past as DOM. GiulioC (talk) 04:49, 28 January 2019 (EST)
If we were going to make the split for Off the beaten path/Destination of the month, would you guys say Matera or Plovdiv would be better for each choice? -- Selfie City (talk) 20:24, 30 January 2019 (EST)
Well, it’s February 3 UTC now. What should our landmark be? -- Selfie City (talk) 20:37, 2 February 2019 (EST)
How about Everglades National Park? -- Selfie City (talk) 20:42, 2 February 2019 (EST)

"Articles needing isPartOf Category" category

I'm a recent newbie, and was wondering... There are several/many/lots of articles with this category on them. I've looked around, but don't see yet how to resolve this, if it is a problem. An article I just created, as well as a few others I've browsed, have this condition. Any opinions/help, or do I even need to concern myself? Thanks in advance. Swissjohn29 (talk) 18:56, 23 February 2019 (EST)

I'm not sure what you mean here, all templates should have isPartOf| at the bottom which just needs to be completed with the location info, is that what you mean? You can just update yourself or add it to any article that is missing this info. Adzas (talk) 10:07, 24 February 2019 (EST)
I put an isPartOf in {{}} at the bottom, but the category list still comes up with "articles needing isPartOf category" among the bottom category listings. I'll mess around a little more with it, but with thousands of articles having this on their category list, it's probably something I'll end up blowing off, in favor of sticking with adding new articles or adding content to existing articles. Thanks Adzas. Swissjohn29 (talk) 14:28, 24 February 2019 (EST)
Ah I see what you mean now. Yes, I see many articles on that list even though they have all the information. I will look into it a bit further, could be just a glitch that needs to be looked at by the tech. department. Thanks for bringing it up! Adzas (talk) 18:52, 24 February 2019 (EST)

Vote on the March 2019 homepage

Any ideas? We're getting into spring, so weather should be similar around the world in most destinations. Perhaps somewhere Mediterranean would work, or Everglades National Park as I mentioned above. -- Selfie City (talk) 20:15, 23 February 2019 (EST)

Yes, Everglades National Park sounds good. If we want a destination in Europe I would choose for Portugal or Greece, love it there! Or Venice as DOM with Carnaval next week? Adzas (talk) 10:09, 24 February 2019 (EST)
Maybe it's a bit too late for Venice Carnival, but it should be mentioned among the events. Everglades National Park sounds good to me, and I don't think it ever featured on the homepage. GiulioC (talk) 03:46, 25 February 2019 (EST)
Portugal and Greece definitely sound really good. Anyone who can update the events info on the homepage? -- Selfie City (talk) 22:01, 25 February 2019 (EST)

Potentially derogatory/unfounded info about a city posted by unregistered posters, and is it reportable?

Just noticed some questionable content placed in a city article where I'm working on, but in a different section than one I've been focused on. Does something like this need to be reverted, reported, or what? Just wondering. It doesn't affect me very much, but I can see it being troublesome for others. Thanks in advance. Swissjohn29 (talk) 22:18, 24 February 2019 (EST)

Which article? Remember that articles' content should be discussed in the respective talk pages. GiulioC (talk) 03:43, 25 February 2019 (EST)
Sorry Giulio, I just meant in general, but yes, I'll be specific there, thanks/grazie! Swissjohn29 (talk) 10:44, 25 February 2019 (EST)

Listings, and their links--which style to use now?

I have seen the section where links are addressed, and one area says to put the link for the listing in the url="" section of the template, while another area says it's "good" to wikilink the name of the listed place/store/hotel itself instead of the url="" (because of the numbers that show up where the weblink is in the listing). I am concerned that I'll have a bunch of work in, then discover later I did it wrong. And yes, I've gone through some of the past threads, but most are dated from a while ago. So, what is the consensus now? —The preceding comment was added by Swissjohn29 (talkcontribs)

Hey Swissjohn!
I think it would be fine to just link the actual location instead of using the wikilink!

What about one of the cultural capitals in Europe this year, Matera in Italy or Plovdiv in Bulgaria? Adzas (talk) 09:39, 23 April 2019 (EDT)
I agree with Adzas: Matera and Plovdiv should definitely be on the homepage sooner or later. I worked on Matera's page recently, I can do some research and add some more in the next weeks (sorry I don't have much time to spend at the moment). GiulioC (talk) 10:16, 23 April 2019 (EDT)
Sure, those sound good. -- Selfie City (talk) 17:22, 23 April 2019 (EDT)
I’m sure we did London before Selfie City, maybe we can think of an ‘unknown’ location in the UK for OBP, so many great nature locations there too. Adzas (talk) 03:55, 24 April 2019 (EDT)
If we're doing Matera and Plovdiv, though, we won't be doing a UK destination, right? -- Selfie City (talk) 14:16, 24 April 2019 (EDT)
A UK destination might be the Cotswolds, what do you think? GiulioC (talk) 03:23, 25 April 2019 (EDT)

Greek islands were mentioned in the above thread. How about Corfu, which seems to be fairly advanced as an article? Perhaps OBP? -- Selfie City (talk) 20:52, 8 May 2019 (EDT)
I think that works for OBP! We can look into it. Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions? IBRyan (talk) 19:40, 15 May 2019 (EDT)
Greek islands are always nice, and there are many articles about them. I agree we can choose one as OBP. I need to think a little bit more about DOM and the rest. GiulioC (talk) 10:26, 17 May 2019 (EDT)
I see Chengdu appearing on lists for popular destinations this year, maybe an option for DOM? If we want to stay in Europe, maybe some location in the Scottish Highlands? (Inverness? I love Greece, I think we have covered Greece a few times though, but Santorini or Mykonos are hot! DOM instead of OBP, so many choices! I will think a bit more too... Adzas (talk)
Sure, Chengdu seems fine. -- Selfie City (talk) 12:23, 25 May 2019 (EDT)
Chengdu looks really good, and also Adzas's idea about Inverness (but I think it was on homepage not a long time ago). As for the greek islands, we have many very good pages about the biggest and most visited ones, and also good articles for some of the least known such as Symi. We could also choose Greek as language and cuisine (I don't remember those on homepage). What do you think? GiulioC (talk) 10:52, 29 May 2019 (EDT)
Chengdu sounds good to me! Greek cuisine also works and Greek Islands for OBP is what I am hearing? Anything else? IBRyan (talk) 14:13, 29 May 2019 (EDT)
I just did a quick search and what about Ukrainian phrasebook? -- Selfie City (talk) 18:40, 29 May 2019 (EDT)
I’ve never heard of Symi, looks amazing, definitely a great choice for OBP! Could the breeding centre for panda’s in Chengdu be an option for the landmark of the month? Adzas (talk) 06:56, 30 May 2019 (EDT)

Vote on the July 2019 homepage

Hello! We're a bit late with the discussion about the July update of our homepage, but let's share some ideas! At the moment we have Chengdu as DOM and Symi as OTBP (and Scottish Highlands as Landmark, interesting...), what about a European DOM and an Asian OTBP? GiulioC (talk) 05:24, 26 June 2019 (EDT)

Just having a look around the site, what about a location in Mongolia? Like Altai Tavan Bogd National Park for example? And Serbia also has some amazing locations. I will think a bit more about the rest... Adzas (talk) 09:41, 26 June 2019 (EDT)
Yes, definitely nothing wrong with the Mongolian park. -- Selfie City (talk) 19:39, 26 June 2019 (EDT)
That national park looks amazing! The article needs a few more pictures though, I'll look for them. GiulioC (talk) 04:09, 27 June 2019 (EDT)
Great, any thoughts on Landmark/cuisine/language? If we go for a location in Mongolia then maybe Mongolian as our language? Adzas (talk) 07:47, 27 June 2019 (EDT)
Mongolian phrasebook looks good to me, so it can be language of the month. As for the rest, we could maybe stick with some asian landmark/cuisine? GiulioC (talk) 09:29, 27 June 2019 (EDT)
Those sound like good ideas — Forbidden City and Great Wall of China come to mind for the landmark. -- Selfie City (talk) 11:25, 28 June 2019 (EDT)
Great Wall of China sounds great. What about Vietnamese Cuisine? That makes a nice selection of different locations. Adzas (talk) 05:24, 29 June 2019 (EDT)
So, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park as DOM and all the other as language/landmark/cuisine? What about OTBP? Adzas mentioned Serbia as it has many lovely places. These days I'm watching EuroBasket Women championship, Italy is playing in Niš which looks good to me. What do you think? GiulioC (talk) 03:03, 30 June 2019 (EDT)
That looks like a lovely OTBP destination Giulio! So many great places still to explore... Adzas (talk) 05:29, 30 June 2019 (EDT)
Any ideas for event of the month? Tomorrow is the Final of the World Cup soccer (Netherlands vs United States, so after that we can add a new event. Adzas (talk) 04:56, 6 July 2019 (EDT)
Well, I didn't know we did an event of the month, but it sounds like a great idea. -- Selfie City (talk) 13:03, 7 July 2019 (EDT)

We still have these, even tho DMOZ closed a couple of years back. We have a couple of options: 1.) remove them (as the WMF travel wiki did) or 2.) replace them with links to, where the majority of the DMOZ community went. Thoughts? Koavf (talk) 18:49, 1 July 2019 (EDT)

Hi Koavf, I made a separate subject of this, I don’t think this has to do with the DOM votes etc? I don’t know enough about this subject to answer, all I know is we stopped using it years ago, so not sure if we want to replace this now. Adzas (talk) 04:37, 2 July 2019 (EDT)
Sorry, like Adzas I don't know much about it. GiulioC (talk) 09:22, 3 July 2019 (EDT)

Vote on the August 2019 homepage

We're a bit late for the discussion, but August is approaching and we need a new Destination of the Month to feature on the homepage! Any ideas? Share your thoughts! GiulioC (talk) 09:25, 25 July 2019 (EDT)

What about seaside cities? Have me thinking about the beaches of Bali, Casablanca and Alexandria. Definitely great places to be in August. What about you guys? --Binbin (talk) 09:52, 25 July 2019 (EDT)
Those all sound like good choices. -- Selfie City (talk) 16:13, 25 July 2019 (EDT)
I like those choices... also people are now planning autumn travel (and soon Christmas!), so temperate places like Boston, Europe, etc. are fair game... IBobi (talk) 17:19, 25 July 2019 (EDT)
I do like Casablanca as one of the destinations. I just came across an article on the Spanish Wikitravel about Rainbow Mountain in Peru, what about that one for Landmark of the month? Looks so beautiful! Bohemian Paradise also looks amazing, let's try to find some lesser known locations that we should all explore..... what about Triglav National Park? Busy in summer, good time to go after summer and in winter for those who want snow. Sounds perfect! Yellowstone in the US must be pretty too when it gets closer to fall. Just a few thoughts. Adzas (talk) 04:44, 27 July 2019 (EDT)
I like all the mentioned locations, Casablanca article looks good. There are many places in Europe that are worth visiting after summer: Bled, Colmar and Hallstatt are just some ideas. GiulioC (talk) 04:40, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
So all we need to do is pick a few, not easy! Note to any editors here, anyone can participate in those discussions, don’t be shy, let us know what you want to see featured! I just can’t stop looking at pictures of Rainbow Mountain now, we will add that one for sure. Adzas (talk) 10:14, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
Does anyone also have any suggestions for the Event of the Month, to replace the FIFA match, any important sports events or festivals that we can add to the front page? Adzas (talk) 05:27, 31 July 2019 (EDT)
Definitely the Fringe festival in Edinburgh. GiulioC (talk) 06:01, 31 July 2019 (EDT)
The Fringe Festival has been added to the event list. So what about the rest, today is the day to change the DOM, shall we do Casablanca then? Or a US DOM and then Bohemian Paradise as OBP? Landmark could be Rainbow Mountain in Peru, Moroccan cuisine looks delicious in the Morocco article, and then phrasebook of the month, any ideas to make it a diverse selection? Adzas (talk) 05:37, 1 August 2019 (EDT)
Casablanca can be DOM, the article is good, and moroccan cuisine is a nice idea to have on homepage. Bohemian Paradise is also good but needs some pictures. I definitely agree with Rainbow Mountains as landmark! GiulioC (talk) 06:47, 1 August 2019 (EDT)

Vote for the September 2019 Homepage

Hello Wikitravelers near and far!

Please let us know what you would like to see for the: - Destination of the Month - Off the Beaten Path - Landmark of the Month - Cuisine of the Month - Language of the Month - Event of the Month~~

I was reading something the other day about Truffle hunting in Alba, Italy, from September-November. Sounds very interesting, either as event of the month or DOM/OBP, what you think Giulio? I could not find an official link for it, but would love to learn more! Maybe there are other locations to do this? For the rest I will have to think a bit more. Adzas (talk) 10:10, 17 August 2019 (EDT)
It's the International Alba White Truffle Fair, it's huge and could definitely be the event of the month. Alba itself is a nice little town in the Langhe, a UNESCO site in Piedmont very famous for its vineyards. Those articles need some more content though.. GiulioC (talk) 11:08, 17 August 2019 (EDT)
Huge fan of Italy and Truffles! Let's do it! IBobi (talk) 18:15, 19 August 2019 (EDT)
Ok, I will add some content to Alba and Langhe articles. GiulioC (talk) 04:18, 20 August 2019 (EDT)
Event of the month must be a new one, is it? -- Selfie City (talk) 08:57, 25 August 2019 (EDT)
Event of the month is always displayed on the main page, but we didn't really vote for it, but ideas are always welcome! As Alba is an article that still needs some work, shall we do that as OBP then, with the truffle hunt as event of the month? As we talked about destinations where to see the beautiful autumn colours, what about Muskoka? Or Montana? Trying to think of some more 'unusual' locations that we haven't covered yet.... with the truffle hunt I would say Italian cuisine as Cuisine of the month, what interesting language shall we cover this time? What about the Blood Falls in Antarctica as landmark of the month? I'll look for a picture to add to the article. Any other thoughts? Adzas (talk) 09:12, 25 August 2019 (EDT)
For autumn, aren’t places in the Appalachians the best, though? -- Selfie City (talk) 16:55, 27 August 2019 (EDT)
Any specific location you have in mind there Selfie City (talk)? I know we have covered New England, Vermont, Massachusetts in the past, so we need something different. For sure those areas are beautiful though.... Adzas (talk) 17:16, 27 August 2019 (EDT)
I think Alba can be a good OTBP and the truffle fair a good event of the month, so it's also a good idea to feature Italian cuisine (autumn is great, there are many seasonal recipes with truffle as well as pumpkin, mushrooms, chestnuts and so on). I wouldn't choose again a location around New England as DOM, we'd better look somewhere else for some natural areas or a city (in this case I'd choose a European one). GiulioC (talk) 09:02, 28 August 2019 (EDT)
To have some variety and as above is mainly in Europe already, what about a DOM outside of Europe? What about Huangshan or Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve, reading about it the fall colours are quite good there too. Binbin, what you think? Looking at the List of phrasebooks for some original ideas there, what about Esperanto phrasebook? Adzas (talk) 04:15, 29 August 2019 (EDT)
Thinking outside of Europe, have we ever featured some place around Australia or Oceania as DOM? GiulioC (talk) 04:49, 29 August 2019 (EDT)
September & October is definitely the best season for Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve. Very very comfortable weather, and the color is just intoxicating. It's definitely can be a very good choice for DOM for September. --Binbin (talk) 05:39, 29 August 2019 (EDT)
I don’t think we covered much of Australia or Oceania as DOM yet, if we want to cover autumn and its beautiful colours that would not be a good option though, we could do a location there the month after maybe, together with the Coral Reef as landmark..... I just want to travel now! Adzas (talk) 10:19, 29 August 2019 (EDT)
Just thinking, if we want to cover something in Australia, why not pick the landmark of the month there? Coral Reef? Alice Rock? Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane? Adzas (talk) 05:30, 31 August 2019 (EDT)
What about the nature reserve for OTP and one of Australia’s major destinations for DOM? Or even landmark? -- Selfie City (talk) 06:10, 31 August 2019 (EDT)
As we wanted to cover the autumn colours, Australia would not make sense as DOM, so maybe better to pick Australia next month, but we could feature something there as landmark yes, to have a diverse selection. So many choices.... Adzas (talk) 09:11, 31 August 2019 (EDT)
Great Barrier Reef as landmark is a good choice, also because climate change is going to affect it badly [3]. So can we use it to raise awareness about climate change? Also by other WT social media pages, what do you think? GiulioC (talk) 12:21, 31 August 2019 (EDT)
Agree with Astrid as Austrilia does not offer autumn colours as of now. But we can definitely do Great Barrier Reef and other places in Austrilia next month or in the near future. --Binbin (talk) 02:26, 1 September 2019 (EDT)

October 2019 Homepage

--It's that time of the month again! Any suggestions for D.O.M/E.O.M? I saw Concurs de Castells and a Polar Marathon , it looked pretty cool. IBanna (talk) 15:39, 24 September 2019 (EDT)IBanna

It’s getting harder every time to pick a great location, there are so many! To prepare for the winter season I would love to feature an article again with the Northern Lights, Finland or Iceland? Galapagos Islands could be a nice winter destination. Santa Marta I noticed on our Spanish site, looks nice as maybe a OBP? With Halloween coming up we could also pick a location in Mexico and definitely add the Day of the Dead events, together with above mentioned events. As we did talk about Australia last month, shall we pick a lesser known location there? Just looking at Kangaroo Island, looks great. Or Kakadu National Park. Just brainstorming here, lets go! Adzas (talk) 09:21, 25 September 2019 (EDT)
Northern Lights! Yes yes yes! But we definitely need also a warmer location: Santa Marta looks good, and also Cartagena (but I think it already featured on I wrong?). We did talk about Australia, did you know that australian wines are really good? Barossa Valley is the most important wine region over there. There are some lesser known locations in Africa also: what about Ilha de Mozambique? I'll get back with more ideas.. GiulioC (talk) 03:38, 26 September 2019 (EDT)
I did some wine tasting tours in Australia yes, very good for sure! I’m sure we covered Cartagena before (also a lovely place, visited it long long time ago), but Colombia for sure has other lovely locations to be discovered that we can feature. I will also think a little more. Maybe a wine theme? South African wines are nice too...Adzas (talk) 03:47, 26 September 2019 (EDT)

Unique Fall Festivities!

Hi everyone! It's the middle of fall and I was wondering what kind of unique fall traditions or events are around the world! In California, seasonal drinks and beers are always something I look forward to and Halloween Horror Nights are the best, but I wanted to know what other fall fun is out there! Any suggestions? IBanna (talk) 18:37, 22 October 2019 (EDT) IBanna

I love it! It is a little late to be sourcing Autumn posts (we should probably be thinking Christmas now), but I do know there's a cool Italian halloween fest in a small city whose name escapes me; and there are Dia De Los Muertos all over Mexico, and there's the WeHo Carnivale, and New Orleans stuff... IBobi (talk) 18:55, 22 October 2019 (EDT)
There are some regional traditions in Italy, but I don't know much about them. Halloween has become quite popular in Italy, but it is mainly about costume parties and children doing the "trick or treat" just like in the USA. I can do some research if you want. GiulioC (talk) 03:51, 23 October 2019 (EDT)
In Chinese culture fall/autumn is a big thing. Numerous poets have left a great many of beautiful poetries about this season. And we do have a special holiday --- Mid-Autumn Day (a public holiday, the 15th days of the 8th month in Chinese lunar calendar), which is dedicated the Moon and family reunion. Apart from this holiday, we have this Chong Yang Jie (Double Ninth Festival, not a public holiday but is well advocated nevertheless, the 9th days of 9th month in Chinese lunar calendar) which focuses more about the social awareness of caring for/respecting the elderly (it's traditionally for climbing moutains, enjoying the beautiful autumn season, and cherish the memories of the ones that are important to you). --Binbin (talk) 08:16, 23 October 2019 (EDT)
Ooh what's the WeHo Carnival? GiulioC, I'd love to know more about Italy's fall traditions! Binbin, I've actually recently went to LA's Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, it was very lively and beautiful! I'm sure the festival in China is much bigger though! Thank you for the fall suggestions! I am excited to hear more from everyone! IBanna (talk) 19:38, 23 October 2019 (EDT)IBanna
Like above, Halloween seems to be bigger each year. In Portugal they celebrate the Day of St.Martin on November 11th, which involves eating chestnuts roasted on the fire, it is lovely. In the Netherlands they also celebrate this day, but there it involves kids going by houses, singing with lanterns, in order to get candies, like the trick or treat with Halloween in other countries. Other then that, local Christmas markets are starting here already the coming weeks, time to update our Christmas Markets article with some new markets! Adzas (talk) 03:45, 24 October 2019 (EDT)
We have a famous Christmas song in the states about "chestnuts roasting on an open fire", interesting to learn there is a day to eat chestnuts! Could be a potential E.O.M?IBanna (talk) 16:27, 25 October 2019 (EDT)IBanna
I found something about Halloween in Italy. There are many local traditions involving carved pumpkins and children going around villages asking for food (just like the "trick or treat"). In the village of Ampezzo in Friuli-Venezia Giulia there's the "La Not dalis Muars" ("night of the dead") that is the Celtic New Year. In some areas of Piedmont and Calabria families gather to have dinner with extra seats and food for the dead. Sardinia have two traditions: "Is Animeddas" ("The Witches") in the south, and "Su Mortu Mortu" in the north: children go around but instead of asking trick or treat they ask in local dialect “seus benius po is animeddas”(“we came for Animeddas”), “carki cosa po sas ànimas” (“something for the souls”), “peti cocone” (“ask for bread”). Note that these are all local, there isn't a single widespread "Halloween" tradition in Italy where All Saints (1st november) is holiday. After all Italy is a (mostly) Catholic country and in the past such things were considered pagan cults and therefore condemned by the Church. GiulioC (talk) 08:30, 26 October 2019 (EDT)

Vote on the November 2019 Homepage!

I've started this discussion, as it's definitely time we started voting on November's main page. Looking at the above discussion, what if we did somewhere in Portugal or California? -- Selfie City (talk) 07:37, 26 October 2019 (EDT)

Warm places, I like the idea. GiulioC (talk) 08:33, 26 October 2019 (EDT)
True! I didn't think of that. -- Selfie City (talk) 18:18, 28 October 2019 (EDT)
I’m all for Portugal, not that I am biased haha. Only in the Algarve it is still nice and warm, up north it is cooling down now, but also lovely this time of year. What about Porto as DOM? As Anna suggested we can also add the Magusto (Nov 11) as Event of the Month, it is done all over Portugal. What shall we do for OBP? Adzas (talk) 07:25, 29 October 2019 (EDT)
Porto is nice! And I'm curious about this Magusto, what is it? GiulioC (talk) 10:16, 29 October 2019 (EDT)
It is the celebration of Day of St. Martin, and also the celebration of the harvest of the grapes. This day chestnuts are roasted on bonfires, and are tasted with the first wines of the year.Adzas (talk) 13:29, 29 October 2019 (EDT)
Sounds great! Maybe we could introduce some of the food at Magusto as C.O.M? IBanna (talk) 11:40, 30 October 2019 (EDT)IBanna
What about OBP? What about Varkala? Don’t think we have covered much of India lately. Or Siquijor in the Philipines? Just thinking of some lesser know locations to explore. Adzas (talk) 04:49, 31 October 2019 (EDT)
I don't remember remember any Indian place on the homepage, what about Ellora? GiulioC (talk) 12:17, 31 October 2019 (EDT)
Ellora sounds amazing too! Article needs some pictures though, or we can use the caves here as Landmark of the Month. Indian language and Portuguese cuisine? Adzas (talk) 05:28, 1 November 2019 (EDT)

New Default Banner

Hi everyone, I have recently changed the default home page banner for the non-EN pages to the one on the side(It says "welcome to Wikitravel!" in each corresponding language):

If there is anything you would like to add to the banner, please let me know. I've gotten requests to add Sakura (the national Japanese flower) to add more of a personal feel to the banner.IBanna (talk) 18:21, 6 November 2019 (EST)IBanna

Changing Tabs: Top Mountain Trails and European Cities

Hi everyone! I am thinking of updating the tabs on the main page for Top Mountain Trails and European Cities. Any suggestions on what you would like to see?IBanna (talk) 11:55, 18 November 2019 (EST)IBanna

Maybe instead of Top Mountain Trails put Active Holiday Destinations, we can then still list trails (but also lesser known trails, I’ve done one in Juneau, Alaska once, the lower lake trail, never made it to the upper lake haha, that was too much for me....) but also great bike routes etc. I will think of other ideas. Adzas (talk) 12:17, 18 November 2019 (EST)
Two beautiful mountain trails are in the Dolomites: Tre Cime di Lavaredo, not too far from Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Alta Via which runs from Braies lake to Belluno (around 150 kms). As for the European Cities, how many of them are we going to list? GiulioC (talk) 15:12, 18 November 2019 (EST)
Active Holiday Destinations sounds like a good idea! We could call it active seasonal destinations instead? since there aren't many holidays in the summer season. For the European cities, I was wondering if we should change the tab to a whole different tab? IBanna (talk) 12:35, 19 November 2019 (EST)IBanna
What about a tab with Hidden Gems (I know we have OBP already but this may stand out more)Adzas (talk) 14:41, 19 November 2019 (EST)
I like that! Hidden Gems sounds great. IBanna (talk) 13:36, 20 November 2019 (EST)IBanna
Hidden Gems sounds good to me. It's not the same as OBP, an hidden gem could also be a lesser-known place in a big city, a place that tourists don't know or visit. GiulioC (talk) 10:31, 28 November 2019 (EST)

Dec 2019 homepage!

Hi everyone! December is nearing so I thought it would be a good time to start discussing the Dec homepage! Any ideas? IBanna (talk) 12:26, 25 November 2019 (EST)IBanna

Well, with Xmas around the corner, shall we highlight our Christmas Markets article for the Event of the Month? Have we covered Barbados before? Maybe as DOM, apparently nice to go there in January/Feb. OBP destination something in Panama? I was looking at Boquete, year round destination. Landmark of the month could then be the Panama Canal (I’ve had the priviledge to go through the canal several times years ago, what an amazing experience!). Will think of other options, also cuisine and language...Adzas (talk)
We definitely need to feature the Christmas Markets article on homepage. DOM: I don't remember Barbados nor Panama, they're both great locations. Central/South America may be where to find landmark and cuisine of the month. Will think about it. GiulioC (talk) 10:31, 28 November 2019 (EST)
Christmas Markets, Panama, and Barbados are all OK, although Barbados is not a very good article. I like Adzas' idea for Panama (Canal) as a landmark. -- Selfie City (talk) 12:47, 29 November 2019 (EST)
I agree Selfie City (talk), Barbados article needs some work first. Any other suggestions? What about Grenada? Adzas (talk) 12:32, 30 November 2019 (EST)
Sorry, I guess I forgot about this discussion! -- Selfie City (talk) 13:08, 31 December 2019 (EST)

Where are you currently located?

Let’s have some fun and show some action! With so many editors on our site, let us know where you are travelling at the moment. We can then have a look which articles in your area may need some content so we can all work on it together! Wikitravel is for all of us, so let’s work together! Also, are there any upcoming major events in your location (where you live or travel)? Add them here so we can feature them on our main page. Any news that is important to know for travellers? Let us know! Happy editing! Adzas (talk) 09:40, 20 December 2019 (EST)

I'm travelling around my region and others to visit cities. There aren't many significant events though, next big one will be the Carnival in Venice. GiulioC (talk) 08:22, 23 December 2019 (EST)
Currently at home in LA, heading to Big Bear for New Year's! IBobi (talk) 15:50, 23 December 2019 (EST)
I am currently in the Algarve in Portugal, it's going to be a sunny Christmas here. There are lots of nice villages to visit in this area, beautiful nature to see, I will look into adding some content or create articles for those locations. If you have any nice pictures of Big Bear IBobi (talk), that would be great! Adzas (talk) 04:53, 24 December 2019 (EST)
Currently in Xi'an. The next event will be the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival (春节 chūnjié), it's just 1 month away now (Jan 25). I've travelled to Democratic Republic of the Congo, Maputo, and Addis Ababa recently. Will try to have a look at those articles and see if I can add some information. Cheers! --Binbin (talk) 05:54, 26 December 2019 (EST)

January 2020 homepage

Only a few more days before the new year starts! Any suggestions for the Destinations for that month, cuisine, language etc? I just noticed an edit on the Kanchanaburi page, interesting location to feature I think. I will think a bit more about the rest. Adzas (talk) 04:50, 26 December 2019 (EST)

Kanchanaburi looks good, but is it good enough to be DOM? It may lead to feature thai cuisine/language on homepage, not bad! December featured caribbean locations, focusing on far- east or Southeast Asia is a good idea as there are many wonderful places that may be also landmarks of the month (national parks, temples and so on). GiulioC (talk) 09:10, 27 December 2019 (EST)
I'd go for Singapore as the DOM. Kanchanaburi seems to be nice too, maybe as the OTBP? January in Singapore, the weather, the food and all the fun stuff to do. The biggest event (the Chinese New Year) is in January this year. Even more fine to be there this Janauary. What do you guys think? --Binbin (talk) 01:19, 30 December 2019 (EST)
Singapore is one of our best articles, I'm sure it was on homepage some years ago. Carnival is another big event coming on the next months. Rio de Janeiro and Venice are probably the most famous carnival destinations (though Venice is still recovering from last november's flooding) and the articles are pretty good too. GiulioC (talk) 10:32, 30 December 2019 (EST)
Why not Singapore as DOM, Kanchanaburi as OBP, Chinese New Year we can make the event of the month (any good link for that to use?), Thai cuisine and Thai Language? We could pick a Landmark in Venice (the bridge, the square, the basilica? Adzas (talk) 05:51, 31 December 2019 (EST)
That sounds okay with me; I'll take a look at Kanchanaburi. Venice as a whole could possibly be the landmark of the month. -- Selfie City (talk) 13:09, 31 December 2019 (EST)
Singapore as DOM, Kanchanaburi as OBP sounds great! Unfortunately, there's no article on Wikitravel about Chinese New Year yet, but can we put a Chinese city with rich culture/history (Beijing or Xi'an) as the place for the event of the month (Chinese New Year)? Just a thought. Venice sounds great for landmark of the month too! --Binbin (talk) 03:45, 1 January 2020 (EST)
I may be too late, but for the Chinese New Year, what about China#Holidays? -- Selfie City (talk) 16:45, 3 January 2020 (EST)

February 2020 homepage

It’s that time again! Any suggestions? Adzas (talk) 09:21, 27 January 2020 (EST)

Well, we had asian destinations for January, we may choose somewhere in Europe or America. We could also give tips for a spring destination: I know (and Adzas knows it better than the rest of us) that the Netherlands are beautiful in spring, what about some DOM/OTBP there? Also, let's not forget that Galway is 2020's European Capital of Culture, we'll definitely need to feature it on homepage sooner or later. GiulioC (talk) 09:34, 28 January 2020 (EST)
What about a full spring theme. We always talk about the cherry blossom in Japan, maybe a DOM destination there, then a nice tulip destination in the Netherlands as OBP (maybe Noordwijk or Bulb Region in general, to make it nice and colourful? As yes, it is beautiful there in spring... We could do Galway next month then. Dutch language of the month, Japanese cuisine? Any landmark suggestions? Just reading about the Holi colour festival in India, we could add that as event of the month (it is in March). Adzas (talk) 11:17, 28 January 2020 (EST)
Great idea Adzas! Speaking of cherry blossom, there are cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. as well. Just in case an alternative is wanted :-). I agree with Adzas though. --Binbin (talk) 23:28, 28 January 2020 (EST)
I just saw some pictures of Noordwijk and surrounding areas, it's beautiful! Hirosaki in Japan features a famous Cherry Blossom festival, could it be our DOM? GiulioC (talk) 04:55, 29 January 2020 (EST)

School/travel project

Whoever is working on the project at the moment, with many new articles created about great sights, please make sure you check our guidelines (most editors will have received a personal message as well), and remember that any pictures that you wish to add to your articles, need to be uploaded via Wikitravel Shared only. Let us know how we can help you with your edits. Adzas (talk) 11:08, 16 February 2020 (EST)

March 2020 homepage

It's almost time to update our homepage! Any ideas about next DOM, OTBP, Landmark, Language, Cuisine and events? Some big sports events are coming this spring/summer: UEFA Euro 2020 will take place all over Europe from June 12th to July 12th. Summer Olympics will take place in Tokyo from July 24th to August 9th. What about creating special pages for these? GiulioC (talk) 05:39, 25 February 2020 (EST)

I like the idea of running an ongoing Tokyo Olympics page starting now, and going until the Games are through. Can someone create? IBobi (talk) 17:01, 25 February 2020 (EST)
We could use the previous format of the UEFA Euro, that was fun to keep up to date. I see the opening game is in Rome? Maybe start getting some interest for that as DOM? Summer Olympics sounds great too. I’ll need to think a bit more about the other destinations.... Adzas (talk) 12:41, 27 February 2020 (EST)
We could definitely use the Euro/World Cup template we used before, and I think we could also choose one of the hosting cities as DOM. The games will take place in Rome, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest, Glasgow, Bruxelles, Baku, London, Munich and Saint Petersburg. They're all good articles, what do you think? I'd go with Saint Petersburg. GiulioC (talk) 09:24, 28 February 2020 (EST)
Saint Petersburg sounds good to me. I don't know much about Baku, shall we choose an OBP near there, like Sheki, beautiful area as far as I can see! I don't think we have covered anything in Azerbaijan before, we could do a phrasebook and cuisine too from that area? Maybe pick a landmark from Bruxelles? Adzas (talk) 13:35, 28 February 2020 (EST)
I'm sure we never covered Azerbaijan before, so some OTBP there is good to me. As for the Bruxelles landmarks, the most famous are the Grand Place and the Atomium, they're both really nice. GiulioC (talk) 12:09, 29 February 2020 (EST)
Just thinking, maybe as so much work was put in the Myanmar project, we could pick a landmark there for this month, this way we also don’t only cover Europe and this side of the world....Adzas (talk) 03:47, 2 March 2020 (EST)
You're right, there are so many beautiful places out there. GiulioC (talk) 04:02, 2 March 2020 (EST)

Coronavirus Outbreak

Are there any sites closed in your country/location due to the Coronavirus outbreak, or other important restrictions that can affect a travellers plans, please share it here with us, or enter it directly in the Coronavirus article, so everyone is fully up to date during this situation. Thanks! Adzas (talk) 09:00, 7 March 2020 (EST)

Maybe we could add a cancelled events section to the CV page? A table of contents would help too... IBobi (talk) 14:11, 11 March 2020 (EDT)
I have been adding some cancelled events in the Outbreak schedule (last column), to keep it in one place, but we could make a separate section. Somehow the TOC does not display, will look into that too. Adzas (talk) 16:47, 11 March 2020 (EDT)
At this point, however, I would say that events/sites scheduled in late March and early April are more likely to be canceled than not. There may be a way to factor this thinking into our coverage of the coronavirus, but I'm not sure how, since those events/places that are open will be hurt by a statement saying something like, "expect everything to be closed." -- Selfie City (talk) 08:33, 17 March 2020 (EDT)

With all the current travel restrictions, closed borders and with in many countries a quarantaine in place due to COVID-19, it is even more important to share beautiful locations so we can all admire the beautiful sights from our home. Let's think ahead of some breathtaking places, so we can work on the articles to make them even more attractive! Maybe we can also (as an exception) add some links to places that now offer virtual tours (either make one designated travel topic article about this or add some to our Coronavirus article?), so we can all dream a little and plan those holidays in our mind for when we are allowed to travel again. Anyone can leave their suggestions here for locations, lets see some action! I just came across the article about Fernando de Noronha, a Unesco location, OBP? I will think about other locations, please join in! Adzas (talk) 05:58, 23 March 2020 (EDT)

Since my country is facing hard times I'd love to suggest some places in Italy. Ferrara is often overlooked but it is a true gem and a UNESCO site. The village of Acitrezza in Sicily is beautiful, and very close to Catania and Mount Etna. My region Veneto has many beautiful places, not just Venice. I'll add more in the next days. GiulioC (talk) 12:55, 23 March 2020 (EDT)
The Ferrara article looks more complete, make that the DOM for April then, to show our support to Italy? Mount Etna we could do as landmark? Maybe for variety an OBP destination in a different part of the world?Anyone else with some great ideas? Adzas (talk) 06:29, 27 March 2020 (EDT)
I may work a little bit on Ferrara and Mount Etna articles then. An OBP somewhere in America maybe? GiulioC (talk) 10:00, 27 March 2020 (EDT)
Maybe a lesser known National Park, like Capitol Reef National Park or Joshua Tree National Park? Or Kauai to add a little beach? Adzas (talk) 14:29, 28 March 2020 (EDT)
I like the idea of Kauai. Joshua Tree is pretty famous, and it would be nice to see the island's population represented. IBShep (talk) 15:20, 2 April 2020 (EDT)
Maybe we can do Kauai next month, the locations already have been updated. The article needs a little more attention, I will try to work on that. The OBP probably depends a little on interpretation, for those in the US Joshua Tree is famous, for us (or for me for sure) in Europe it may be more unknown. For sure I would definitely love to visit that park one day (and many others), it sure does look beautiful. Adzas (talk) 05:03, 4 April 2020 (EDT)

Judging from the above, the plan is to continue with the destinations on this wiki. Any thoughts on good locations for spring? Judging from the weather forecasts I've seen, it's going to be quite a warm spring, so we could some places farther north, perhaps, such as in Northern or Eastern Europe. -- Selfie City (talk) 11:18, 21 April 2020 (EDT)

Yes, we still continue with our destinations, so much to admire and dream of so plans can be made for later. We already did spring locations, we should probably focus more on summer destinations. Last month I suggested Kauai, we can use that location maybe this month? Going to think a bit more about the rest, I will share soonest. Adzas (talk) 12:40, 21 April 2020 (EDT)
I just came across an amazing picture of Edinburgh castle, we could use that as landmark of the month? Let's pick some locations with amazing cultural sights this time, so much beauty around us... Adzas (talk) 04:54, 22 April 2020 (EDT)
Edinburgh castle is amazing, could be a great landmark of the month. If we go with cultural sights then we can stick to Europe or move somewhere we haven't covered before. What about Morocco? The imperial cities (Marrakech, Rabat, Fez and Meknes) are beautiful. GiulioC (talk) 09:36, 22 April 2020 (EDT)
Perhaps we should choose places not impacted by the coronavirus. Africa, Australia and South America would be candidates in that case. -- Selfie City (talk) 11:52, 23 April 2020 (EDT)
OK, Edinburgh Castle it is, for OBP shall we do Meknes or Fez then (Morocco has a very strict lockdown I believe but we can still admire the sights online..). For DOM, any specific locations in mind? I nice place in Australia as Selfie City (talk) suggested? Fraser Island could be an option, or Kakadu National Park? Which Cuisine shall we feature this month? Adzas (talk) 10:39, 29 April 2020 (EDT)
I think Fez article is a bit more complete than Meknes. Also, good idea to have feature Australian places, the Kakadu National Park looks really interesting. Maybe we can also choose australian or Moroccan cuisine as well? GiulioC (talk) 10:50, 29 April 2020 (EDT)
I also agree on Kakadu National Park, and Australia#Eat looks good. -- Selfie City (talk) 12:52, 29 April 2020 (EDT)

Definitely we should feature Northern Hemisphere destinations (and/or parts of South America and Australia that are hot in summer) this month. It's hard to think of somewhere not impacted by the coronavirus at this point, especially as we already included Australia last month, however; I don't have any good ideas that would work. -- Selfie City (talk) 11:23, 21 May 2020 (EDT)

Road trips? IBobi (talk) 19:38, 21 May 2020 (EDT)
Even though travel is restricted, there are still a lot of beautiful places to be admired, either in person or via internet. And as restrictions are slowly being lifted, I'm sure in summer (what we would focus on now with our DOM), more can be explored. Road trips definitely an idea. As DOM, what about Portugal or a specific city there? Lisbon still has daily flights coming in, tourism businesses have a Clean & Safe label and are ready to receive tourists again, beaches will officially open on June 6th. I will think of some other options. I see some great parks and waterfalls in Arizona for example, back soon with more ideas! Adzas (talk) 04:19, 22 May 2020 (EDT)
Adzas is right, there are so many places around the world you can enjoy also via internet, and travel restrictions hopefully won't last much longer (for example Italy's borders will reopen on June 3rd, and beach facilities are opening these days). I'd choose a european location as DOM: Portugal or Lisbon are both great but I'll be thinking about others. As OTBP I just found this Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Never seen before, what do you think? GiulioC (talk) 05:08, 22 May 2020 (EDT)
I think Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is a really good idea. -- Selfie City (talk) 15:50, 22 May 2020 (EDT)
Any other specific suggestions? OTBP we can do Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site,as Giulio suggested. What about DOM? if not something in Portugal, what about a location in Sweden, I think pretty much all is open there since they did not do a lockdown? Any ideas? Adzas (talk) 14:36, 30 May 2020 (EDT)
Portugal looks good to me and I'd stick to that. I don't know much about Sweden, just a few locations in the south such as Malmö, Lund and Landskrona. GiulioC (talk) 02:38, 31 May 2020 (EDT)
As I know LOT Polish Airlines will re-open connections between some European cities in mid of June or July, I've heard it in news. BTW The good destination in Northern Hemisphere are Balkans as they weren't much affected by COVID pandemic. I think also some small holiday village in Poland could be good places.Golden Auste (talk) 06:37, 1 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste.
It would be nice to feature an unknown location in Poland for Off the Beaten Path next month, giving time to work on the article, include pictures etc. I will also have a look nearer to that time what nice options we have. Any specific suggestions Golden Auste (talk)? Adzas (talk) 10:32, 2 June 2020 (EDT)
Eh, I was thinking about Dąbrowa Górnicza but I was out yesterday in the city center and forgot about taking photos :(. I'd suggest places where there're already photos as Będzin, Bytom, Sosnowiec, Żory, Wodzisław Śląski, Goczałkowice Zdrój or Trzebinia. Zagłębie Dąbrowskie as a region could be nice, although it's in Silesian Voivodeship, it's much different culture and history. How about trails I can suggest Via Regia, Szlak Warowni Jurajskich or Szlak Husarii Polskiej. Golden Auste (talk) 14:27, 2 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
I've been out on shopping and made a photo of culture house in Dąbrowa Górnicza. I've been a little modified it in Paint as there were too much cars as I made it from the car park site as there's the best view. So, you can also vote for Dąbrowa too.Golden Auste (talk) 12:41, 3 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste

Updates COVID-19

While many countries are still battling the effects of the Coronavirus, other countries are starting to open up again. Are you living somewhere where tourism is starting up again, let us know, so we can all update our article Coronavirus together so travellers can see where they can go to. Especially when flights start again, restrictions upon entering the country etc. All input is welcome! Adzas (talk) 08:07, 31 May 2020 (EDT)

As far as I'm concerned Baltic States've opened their borders between each others. I've also heard Lithuania is going to open its border with Poland.Golden Auste (talk) 13:57, 6 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
There's said Poland will open its land borders 13 th of June and international flights in 16th of June. Golden Auste (talk) 13:00, 10 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
Good news if you're going to travel to Poland. LOT Polish Airlines will start their flights to chosen European airports from 1st of July: [4].
Perhaps Poland could be the next month's featured destination? -- Selfie City (talk) 09:51, 20 June 2020 (EDT)
How about making a list of countries where we can travel with no restrictioins in COVID section ? Golden Auste (talk) 06:26, 3 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
If you have a look at the Coronavirus article, at the bottom we started a list with updates about locations opening up etc, so feel free to add your information there. It is not easy to keep track though as info seems to be changing, places out of lockdown going back into lockdown, so input from travellers around the world of residents is welcome! Adzas (talk) 17:49, 5 July 2020 (EDT)

We still have a few days to pick a few spectacular destinations, so we can work on the articles if needed. As we talked about last month, we mentioned to possibly go for a OBP in Poland, since our user Golden Auste (talk) has been doing a lot of work recently. Many articles are not completely up to standards yet (missing pictures, not enough content etc), so just checking some out, what about for example Kazimierz_Dolny? I was looking at locations with castles, like in Moszna or the skull chapel in Kudowa-Zdrój but these articles still need to be created or updated. Any thoughts for DOM? A New Zealand location (covid-free apparently), or somewhere in British Colombia? Or a tropical location to dream about? I will have to think a bit more... Adzas (talk) 09:30, 25 June 2020 (EDT)

Kazimierz Dolny could do with pictures, and its IsPartOf is not working, but if those issues were fixed it could be a nice place to feature (maybe Piotrków Trybunalski?). New Zealand is of course in the middle of winter right now, but it could still work, especially in the Auckland region to the north. -- Selfie City (talk) 09:57, 25 June 2020 (EDT)
Kazimierz Dolny looks good and with some pictures would be perfect (the IsPartOf can easily be fixed). Lublin article is also very good (not much editing needed). If we're going to choose some tropical locations I'd stay away from America since the coronavirus outbreak is still very strong. I'll add more ideas later. GiulioC (talk) 10:42, 25 June 2020 (EDT)
I also support idea of Kazimierz Dolny. I was here some years ago and I loved it. I'd also add similar old cities as Zamość, Tarnów or Nowy Sącz or maybe Spa city Krynica Zdrój. I think the good destinations could be Oceania islands and teritories as there have been almost any COVID cases so far but those countries/territories have some restrictions Golden Auste (talk) 13:35, 25 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
Adzas mentioned locations with castles, Centre-Val de Loire in France is famous for its castles. Also, tropical locations: why not choosing a far away place like Moorea? Or other pacific islands? GiulioC (talk) 03:59, 26 June 2020 (EDT)
Oh yes, Moorea, or Bora Bora, I've had the luck to visit that area, true paradise! Adzas (talk) 10:17, 26 June 2020 (EDT)
How about less known places as Niue, Tokelau, Nauru, Kiribati or Marshall Islands? You mentioned castles, there's plenty of castle ruins in Jura Mountains. BTW some of them are reconstructed. I'd also reccomend Kruje castle in Albania or Ioannina, Greece? As Balkans are one of the top 2020 destinations. Moreover they're almost COVID free.Golden Auste (talk) 14:43, 26 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
When picking the articles we need to make sure they follow our guidelines, Jura Mountains for example does not look quite ready yet. Niue or Kiribati look like some great options, definitely lesser known and not used before I think. Kruje also great, Greece we did recently. So many choices, shall we do a vote? What about one of the mentioned tropical destionations for DOM, Kazimierz Dolny for OBP (need some picture added), maybe that castle in Kruje as landmark of the month? Then we just need language and cuisine. Adzas (talk) 05:31, 27 June 2020 (EDT)
OK, my choices Kazimierz Dolny, Nauru and Kruje Golden Auste (talk) 06:04, 27 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
Moorea as DOM, Kazimierz Dolny OTBP. The castle in Kruje is really a good landmark. The articles don't need much editing in my opinion, just a copule of pictures more. We then can choose a tropical cuisine and language (Tahitian maybe?). GiulioC (talk) 05:08, 28 June 2020 (EDT)
Great idea! Golden Auste (talk) 13:51, 28 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
  • Florida is fairly open and relatively low in terms of cases (outside of Miami), but there's no harm in waiting a month or two if we choose to feature it (October is good climate-wise). Therefore the current suggestions made in the previous comment seem entirely appropriate for July 2020. -- Selfie City (talk) 10:24, 29 June 2020 (EDT)
I don't think so, yes it can be an attractive destination but remeber that much of intercontinental flights to the US are cancelled. Golden Auste (talk) 13:44, 29 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
How about North Macedonia? This country's opened its borders recently. Good destinations could be Krusevo or Prilep. Golden Auste (talk) 14:04, 29 June 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
My guess is that travel restrictions won't last long in the U.S., but what's problematic from a traveler's perspective is that EU countries have banned travel from the U.S., so even E.U. destinations might need to be reconsidered as features in the long term. But I'm not opposed to the current nominations for July, since as things stand Americans are unlikely to travel to other countries anyway. -- Selfie City (talk) 09:22, 1 July 2020 (EDT)
Even some European countries haven't opened some borders Golden Auste (talk) 11:47, 2 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste

August 2020

With the current situation regarding lockdowns and the virus, we definitely shouldn't feature any U.S. destinations, and judging from Worldometers Brazil, India, and Russia shouldn't be considered either. Are western European countries open enough to feature now (this is the right time of year for Northern Hemisphere destinations), or is the situation still too problematic there regarding the virus? -- Selfie City (talk) 10:18, 19 July 2020 (EDT)

I think we should think further then the virus, people can still dream and admire beautiful places online and make plans for the future. In Europe countries are open for tourism, but also some are closing again, so it will be something here for much longer then we all thought. I know some locations are offering virtual tours of a city or location, maybe we can look at that, but regardless of the fact that I am not going to travel for a while (own country only at the moment), I still like to explore destinations online. Adzas (talk) 14:23, 19 July 2020 (EDT)
I think currently Eastern Europe, Central Europe and Balkans are opened for tourists and there're almost no cases here. I think we can suggest sth in North Macedonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia . As I learnt Bosnia And Herzegovina has opened its borders recently. Also Norway has done it. I'd propose following destinations Tuzla, Banja Luka or Neum in Bosnia. I was in Neum many years ago and it was quite nice seaside town. As for Norway I'd propose sth in Finnmark , Svalbard or Jan Mayen. As for North Macedonia I'd suggest Krusevo or Prilep.Golden Auste (talk) 08:27, 22 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
I don't know how to create pagebanners on Wikitravel — if someone knows perhaps a pagebanner could be made for one of the featured destination nominations mentioned by Golden Auste above. Finnmark sounds like an interesting idea. -- Selfie City (talk) 10:01, 22 July 2020 (EDT)
Great! I'd vote for Finnmark as DOM and maybe Neum or Krusevo as OBP. Golden Auste (talk) 10:33, 22 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
I just read that WHO is seeing worrying trends in the Balkans, so I'd definitely not choose any location there. Northern Europe at the moment looks better, just like Italy where we're having small local outbreaks that are all under control. Finnmark is ok but the article need more info, maybe we could choose one of the locations listed. I'll share some more ideas in the next days. Also, don't worry about creating banners, I can handle it. GiulioC (talk) 11:00, 22 July 2020 (EDT)
We also need to remember, it is not only which countries are open, but what are the restrictions for getting in and out. Portugal is open for example, but not all countries have added Portugal on their 'green' list, so you will still have lots of restrictions. One country may be open, but a traveller may be in a country that does not allow travel to that destination yet... This COVID-19 makes travelling a challenge for sure, reason I think we should look past this and just admire the beautiful places in the world online for now. And keep it diverse, not just one part of the world. Adzas (talk) 12:36, 22 July 2020 (EDT)
Eh, how about COVID the worst situation is currently in Serbia as I know. Maybe Svalbard or Jan Mayen instead Finnmark? I was also thinking about Greenland but I'm not sure how does look like all epidemic situation here. It's part of Denmark but it's autonomous one. Anyone has any information? Golden Auste (talk) 14:45, 22 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
Many countries in Europe do not allow travel yet from countries outside EU or Shengen, I just looked at the restrictions for Norway, they do not allow overseas travellers yet. So that is my reason for my earlier comments, even though a country is open to certain countries, it may not be open yet to all, other countries may allow travel but require a 14 day quarantine upon return. So why not just admire the beauty this world has to offer without thinking to much about Covid-19, lets find some unknown locations that we all want to know more about, like Torres del Paine National Park for example. I will think of other options. Adzas (talk) 12:16, 23 July 2020 (EDT)
I'm not sure, maybe Czech Republic or Slovakia ? There's very safe and no restrictions.Golden Auste (talk) 13:34, 23 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
I've read that Greenland is doing well at controlling the virus, but if it's going to be featured this year it will have to be either August or not at all. (By September it is already getting cold there.) -- Selfie City (talk) 15:50, 23 July 2020 (EDT)
Adzas , as you mentioned beautiful places on the world, first place on my mind was Socotra. It's really beautiful but impossible to access. As for DOM or OBP maybe sth exotic? I'd vote for Indian Ocean islands, maybe French Territories? I'm not sure if the health safety policy is similar in Mayotte or Reunion as they're French dependencies. Golden Auste (talk) 06:26, 24 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
War zones we usually don’t choose as DOM/OBP, Reunion looks beautiful but the article does need a little work to make it more as per our guidelines, but we still have a week, so could be done. Mayotte needs much more content first. Any thoughts for landmark of the month? Adzas (talk) 07:40, 24 July 2020 (EDT)
OK, for DOM: Karlovy Vary, Liberec, Olomouc, Zagreb, Svalbard or Osijek, as OBP :Hradec Kralove, Ostrava, Zilina, Spisska Nova Ves or Varazdin. I've been to Spisska Nova Ves and Zilina and they're very nice cities. Golden Auste (talk) 14:49, 24 July 2020 (EDT)Golden Auste
