iTravelFree is a free Wikitravel-gateway app for Android and iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch devices, created by Jon Evans. It can be used to download an arbitrary number of Wikitravel pages for offline reading, to plot Wikitravel listings on a map, to download and view OpenStreetMap maps while offline (with Wikitravel listings shown), and to edit Wikitravel while offline.

The iTravelFree server also allows users to plot Wikitravel listings atop Google Maps in any standard web browser.

Features

  • Search for and download any number of Wikitravel pages to a device.
  • Automatically download subpages (regions, districts, etc.) as well.
  • Identify and download pages with listings near any given location.
  • Option to cache images in downloaded pages on the client device as well.
  • Search and list downloaded pages.
  • Download OpenStreetMap maps for subsequent offline use.
  • View downloaded pages, maps, and images while offline.
  • View downloaded pages in a hierarchical iTunes-like interface or on a single screen.
  • View a catalog of all downloaded listings for a destination and its subpages.
  • Edit sections and listings. If offline, edits will be uploaded to Wikitravel when the app is next launched.
  • Map all geolocated listings - those with either a defined lat/long or an address that Google Maps can geocode - for a destination and its subpages.
  • Filter maps and/or catalogs by category (Eat, Drink, Sleep, Buy, etc.) or via a search.
  • Initiate Flickr, Google, Yelp and TripAdvisor searches for a particular listing.
  • View announcements and conversations from the iTravelFree.net message board, and add new messages, even while offline.
  • (on iTravelFree.net) Search for Wikitravel pages and map their geolocated listings in a browser.

A paid version of the app, called iTravel, is also available. This version allows devices to download an essentially complete snapshot of Wikitravel (sans images) for offline browsing, and to download more than one OpenStreetMap at a time.

Status

The app is still a beta release, and under active development. More than 10,000 copies of the Android version, and some 7,500 copies of the iOS version, have been downloaded.

Forthcoming

Expected future features include:

  • More robust offline-editing facilities.
  • An improved messaging/forum interface, possibly integrated with Facebook Connect.
