Map links on geocoded pages[edit]

There is now a special page for mapping services (see shared:Tech:Add SpecialMap using Mapstraction link for geo-tagged pages and for single listings for details). As a test, I've added a Maps link to each page that's marked up per Wikitravel:Geocoding. The formatting leaves a bit to be desired, but it is a geo microformat tag. The maps are no great shakes right now, but eventually I'd like to include points and popup-bubbles for each listing with a geo tag. Anyways, please let me know how this works, if it's valuable, and any other ideas. --Evan 20:08, 12 December 2006 (EST)

A great step! From what I can see on Birmingham (England), the microformat looks fine (there is some debate on the uF mailing list at present, as to whether pages using uFs should require a profile in the "head" tag, but the jury's still out). Unfortunately, though, the "map" link returns just a map of the whole of the USA. I'd be more inclined to link to this service, as does Wikipedia, which offers a far more comprehensive set of mapping and related services - and then ask them to include links to Wikitravel. I've seen that bug before with Microsoft's Virtual Earth on a Debian- or a Debian-derived system with Firefox, or some other Firefox that doesn't support SVG. I should probably detect it and disable VE for those browsers. Try , which should work on all browsers. Yahoo is now the default for all users, but you can select a maptype and it will persist with a cookie. --Evan 08:11, 13 December 2006 (EST)
Curios. I'm using the latest formal release of FireFox, 2.0, under Windows XP. Both Yahoo and Google versions work OK. Andy Mabbett 09:51, 13 December 2006 (EST)
