Vĩnh Long is a the capital of Vinh Long Province in Southern Vietnam. It is located at one of the many branches of the Mekong river.

Get in

By bus

Vinh Long has two bus station: main one outside town (about 4km), and one right in center. Most Can Tho Buses arrive in the town centre.

From Can Tho, bus costs 50000 Dong (Sep 2011) and lasts 1h30. Pay attention as it seems some drivers try to stop you at the outer bus station (see Vinh Long 4km sign) which will force you to pay extra taxi car or moto.

By boat

There are no scheduled boats anymore. However, it is possible to book a tourist boat to Chau Doc including a night on the Mekong (US$20) and a bus transfer to Phnom Penh (additional US$6).

Get around

  • Ferry to An binh cost 500 Dong if you are by walk and up to 2,500 Dong if Honda motorbike, every 15-20min.

  • Small chinese temple Cua Thienh hau on east riverside, not far from south-eastern bridges.

  • Mekong Boat Tour. is the thing to do in Vinh Long. A typical trip includes the floating market at Cai Be and An Binh Island lasting about 4 hours (about US$16 for a private trip, US$5 in a group). On sep 2011, standard price seems to be 300000 Dong/US$15 for 4-5h trip or through Cuu Long Tourist about US$25. Classical tour includes An binh, Cai Be floating market, coconut candy factory, bonsai garden, ...

Our hotel advised us to find a boat for a tour at the waterfront at 6am. We found only one boat and booked it for $15 for 3 hours. Our larger boat did not enter the small channels of An Binh island. The Cai Be market was fairly quiet by our arrival at 7:30am.

  • Visit An binh and the islands by land. If you are on budget or you already have done enough boat tours, you can go to An binh with the ferry (500 Dong, one way) and either walk on the main islands (small bridges connects nearly all the island), rent bicycle/moto or pay a mototaxi (40-60,000 Dong / hour). Bonsai garden is at about 20min from ferry pier by motorbike. By walk, just near the pier, there is a chinese temple and a school, a bit further a church (but it seems closed on sep 2011).
  • Walk on the riverside.

You can easily buy food from some street stall or in the market in town center.

The accommodation options are a bit scattered throughout the town. Some hotels can be found along the main traffic arteries leading to the town centre. There are a couple of options in the city centre. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in this area, however, hotels rarely provide mosquito nets, so bring your own.

On Hung Vuong close to the bus station are three hotels next to each other that are mere copycats of each other:

* Lac Long, 2G Hung Vuong, P.1 - TP Vinh Long (5 min walk from inner bus station), 070.3836846 - 3822099. has decent no frills rooms. Apart from the standard features such as TV, fridge, phone, private bathroom with hot water it also has Wi-Fi - bring your laptop. All the rooms are available with fan or aircon. starts at 120,000 Dong.
* Phung Hoang, 2H Hung Vuong. has as large a choice of comfort as the price indicates. This place is popular with backpackers. 120,000-300,000 Dong.
* Phung Hoang, 2R Hung Vuong. 120,000-300,000 Dong.

Several places on the island offer what they call homestays. These may not be in actual local people's homes, but still in traditional-style houses right in the countryside. One of them is Green Island Tour (070 3859908), offering an overnight stay including a large dinner consisting of many different dishes, breakfast and a bicycle for US$10. It's excellent value considering the dinner alone would cost almost the same in any restaurant. A moto from the bus station can take you here for 50,000 dong including the ferry ride.
