Des Moines (I assume)

Did you erase listings for the High Life Lounge and El Bait Shop? If so, why?

The uses for italics sanctioned by the Manual of Style are for 1)the part of telephone numbers that is unnecessary when dialed locally, 2) foreign words, and 3) to give emphasis to a word for someone who is reading the text closely rather than skimming. Newspaper listings on dozens of other pages are already out there with no italics, so there is no reason to start here... As for photos, I don't really know-- the ones I've put up so far have all been my own. Texugo 00:55, 4 September 2006 (EDT)

I don't want to see a Yellow Book listings either but I think anyone who's visiting Iowa from another country would enjoy seeing an ethnic storie available to them if they want to do some cooking. I live overseas and would love it if I saw a listing where I could pick up some American-style groceries. Also, why did you delete Dahls, Hy-Vee, Fareway, Wal-Mart and Target? Two of them (Dahls and Fareway) are unique to Iowa (one in fact just to Des Moines). These are where even most of the locals shop...these places also offer a variety of services (eg, film processing, Ticketmaster) that would be great for an out-of-towner to know about. I would seriously think about re-inserting these places...after all, all I pretty much did was list how many locations were in the area and the Website...Unizeppelin 01:46, 12 September 2006 (EDT)

As for the long list of ethnic grocery stores, maybe try to pick the best one of each ethnicity? I think the section is dis-proportionately large compared to the percentage of travelers likely to be cooking for themselves in the middle of Iowa. As for the ones I deleted, I removed them because they are big chains, normal places just like every other city on the US map has, most of which also have pharmacies, photo processing, etc. If Dahls and Fareway are unique to Iowa, put them in the Iowa article. Wal-mart and Target are pretty ubiquitous in the States, so if anywhere, I'd put them in the United States article. I definitely don't want to see a Wal-Mart listing in every article for every American city over 10,000 people, do you? For the same reason, I remove McDonald's other mega-fast-food chains when I find listings in city articles. Texugo 04:20, 12 September 2006 (EDT)

Nara restaurants

You completely reverted the experience I had in this Nara restaurant, just based on an "assumption" that this is not possible, although I explicitly state that this is my experience. I do not know about Hamamatsu, but here in Tokyo love restaurants are a new gadget for couples who seek the thrill of having "sanctioned" sex in public. It is this kind of unreflected editing that made me drop out of Wikipedia long ago.

• I'm sorry for the revert, but I was just thinking, you know, Nara is NOT Tokyo. Much more rural place. The description of the restaurant that was there before was fairly positive and normal. Did you actually see people having sex in the restaurant? If the place is actually as bad as you made it sound, then our policy is not to list it at all-- we don't list negative reviews-- so it was either revert what you added, or delete the listing altogether, and I opted for the former, given that I only had the word of an un-registered user IP address (you) against what was there before. New search engine

When you get a chance, could you check out the new search engine on review (http://wikitravel.org/review/Special:Search) and give your feedback on shared:Tech:Lucene search? It's the search tool that Wikipedia uses, and I think it's going to be a good upgrade for us. Bosnia Edit

You removed a section from the Bosnia page on "Eat" - saying it was copied from another page. This is incorrect. I was the author of the majority of the Eat section on that page and the forum you pointed out - http://www.alloexpat.com/bosnia_herzegovina_expat_forum/rss.php?f=8 - copied that section from WikiTravel, not the other way around. If you review history, you will see I made the first significant addition to the Eat section on May 12, 2005. The Forum page you provide the link for was created May 14, 2007. It appears to me that you frequently remove things from other pages, judging by the comments other users have left you. The point of Wiki is to CONTRIBUTE and GROW, not to unnecessarily remove! If you have nothing to add, then don't go around cutting pages. Thanks.

It was an honest mistake. We all make those sometimes. And I don't particularly appreciate the reprimand there, because yes I do frequently remove things from pages, and that in itself is a form of contribution. I do far more removing and reorganizing than adding-- it's called editing, and it is an extremely important part of any wiki. The majority of the things I remove are indeed copyright violations, first person narratives, graffiti, spam, or they are links or other things which are out of line with Wikitravel's policies. Sometimes sections get too long or contain extraneous information that causes the article to lose its focus and makes the pertinent information more difficult to locate, etc. The current version of the Bosnia eat section is a good example. While the tone of the text is right on, the section is a giant block of text, far bigger than the eat section for even China, with no subsections or bulleting, and it meanders a great deal, discussing stews in 3 different places, bread in two different places, etc. The one massive detailed paragraph about smoked meats is also probably more than the average traveller needs to know. The section is in need of a good editing, and I can't promise you that more text will not eventually be removed.Texugo 22:32, 31 January 2008 (EST)

City trimming

Alas, I spent much time being sure that all cities and towns were included in regions for Massachusetts at the behest of Evan (remember him?) :) I understand why you are trimming, but maybe we could leave them under "other towns" or something? -OldPine 22:42, 24 February 2008 (EST)

I understood it this way: Not that every little town can't have its own article. I think they should, but not every little place needs to be listed on a sub-region page when the get out section of the closest decent size place would be enough. As for subdivision, I was under the impression from discussions like this that we want to use counties only when necessary. In this case, don't the three eloquently described subregions of the Connecticut River Valley, the Hilltowns, and the Eastern Uplands make more sense as a way to subdivide this region? The general consensus here, as I read it, is that we should not trim cities from regions if it orphans pages—that is, every town for which we have an article should be navigable via the geographical hierarchy. For example, we leave +9 cities linked from Macedonia, since it currently has no sub-regions. What are your thoughts onPomeranian Voivodship and Pomorskie Voivodship? They're the same. There's not an exact science to naming the voivodships, because it's easy to confuse the English translation of voivodships, so I, use a mixture of the Polish and English names when talking with friends in Warsaw. {{style}} tag on Albuquerque

I was just curious, why did you add a {{style}} tag on the Eat section on Albuquerque? I took it down because as far as I can see, the Manual of Style is excellent. But I wanted to find out why you put it on, in case there is something I'm missing. PerryPlanet 20:08, 30 March 2008 (EDT)

I put that because there is little precedence for dividing the restaurant listings into local cuisine and non-local cuisine. If that were MoS-kosher, I'm sure every city in Japan would have to have Japanese and Non-Japanese sections. The same would be true for many thousands of other locations too. Well, I'm game for merging the two back together, but let's talk to Bill, he's one of the main contributors to the Santa Fe article and he'd probably have something interesting to say about this. IMO the division of cuisines in the Albuquerque article is a Good Thing, because there is a specific problem with restaurant listings for "Large" city articles. Cities in that size range usually (unless they're hopelessly unattractive to the traveler) have many more satisfactory restaurants in each price range than are handled in our usual 7-to-9-member lists. However, precisely because they are Large, rather than Huge, cities, reducing the size of the lists by districtifying the city doesn't make sense. The breakout by cuisine strikes me as one of several appropriate ways of addressing the problem. There is also the point that for cities with distinctive regional cuisines (as Albuquerque has), it does the traveler a service to know which restaurants are serving that cuisine, which may be one of the things the traveler is going there specifically to get. TTCF!

I spent 3 or 4 weeks working on this, and the 5 macro-regions of Texas really need to be broken down because each is like the size of Pennsylvania and there are far too many towns to be covered in one region article. Imagine your friend is going there for a couple of days and he/she asks you, "Where is a good place to eat?" Are you going to recommend fast food? There are enough restaurants in this list that there is no reason to recommend a Big Mac. Puerto Morelos, MX Link deletion

I am curious why the link I provided to on-line maps of Puerto Morelos was deleted. The maps are non-commercial and appear on a basically non-profit, informational website. Thanks for administrating the page on San Gil, unfortunately someone keeps deleting useful information I have no problem with the new hostel being on the site. Ive just been coming back weekly to re-add Macondo hostel which she deletes on a monthly basis. Is there anyway of stopping businesses deleting other hostels?

There is no real way to do that short of banning the person, which we tend to avoid. Unexplained deletions tend to be reverted though, so unless there is something fundamentally non-wikitravel about your listing in the first place, others will support your position. Do keep in mind, however, that you cannot copy and paste material from any other website without providing proof of legal permission on the Talk page. Texugo 19:04, 7 May 2008 (EDT)

onsortir.cat

Hi Bryan! We received a proposal of collaboration for a mutual promotion with a start-up: onsortir.cat [3]

It's a place to gather touristic information, have people's opinions, webs for shops, videos, streaming, etc. but it's only focused to areas where the catalan language is spoken. This means all users of OnSortir write in catalan, just like users in the catalan version of Wikitravel. They are planning for the near future (next winter or so) to introduce individual pages for each account (just like in Wikitravel each user has its own page). The proposal is to have a banner (something similar to the babel distinction for languages) which would say "I am a OnSortir user". In exchange, they would have a banner for those users to show in their pages in OnSortir one "I am a Wikitravel user" with a link to the Catalan Wikitravel.

In the meantime, they also offer a free (no cost) advertising space for us in their web while it's free (still without a contract).

Need Advice

You gave some good advice on my posts on Decatur, Georgia. I have someone who keeps posting a liquor store that does not need to be on this list (along with a small mexican restaurant of no note). There are several 5-6 better mexican restaurants (economy & high end) and closer liquor stores to the city, and the listing is highly suspicious (for someone to list side by side modest establishments outside the city surrounded by a car wash and car dealerships). I am even wondering if the poster has an affiliation with the store? I have done a lot of posts on wikipedia (less on wikitravel) and recognize there are edits I do not agree with. However, this is really bizarre - these establishments do not belong on this list. Is there anything to do when something like this happens? Thanks.--Baxterguy 09:01, 23 September 2008 (EDT)

• Hi. I did not understand why you undid the links I had added: One for buses within the state of Ceara, the other for a google map describing a bus line within the city. So I undid it, reverting it. • The first link you deleted was one that points to a list of all bus lines within the state, which I cannot see as violating the policy. When it comes to the google maps I kind of see your point that maps had rather be in the wikitravel article itself. However, as long as we don't have such maps (I never tried to make one myself. Read the instructions, and it seemed rather a lot of work), it must be better to have these google maps than nothing at all. Or?

And another thing, that is a bit on the side: Why is it that links are included when you print the guide? You sure won't need the links unless you are on a computer with an internet connection, and then you might as well open the guide online.

I read the standard formatting rules and I do not see why you are making half of the changes you are making. You are also making changes that make absolutely no sense at all such as changing "Lansdowne is easily accessible" to "Lansdowne in easliy accessable". I understand that you are trying to make wikitravel a better place but I honestly feel that you are taking away from the page I have added to, and all your repeated changes have done is discourage me from ever contributing to wikitravel again. In the article involivng Edmonton, you deleted all the work in the 'work' section. Why is that? I know it says in the 'history', but that reason I don't get, whats the point in even having a work section, really? Also, if you like look at the Calgary one, it is similar. I just don't get it. Thanks. I'll take a look at the non-standard heading in Yerevan, they were there before and didn't change them so far as I can recall. We can merge whatever doesn't belong into the Armenia article, or wherever it does belong. I'll see what can be done about addresses as well. For the region articles, I'm glad they're in overall good shape. I am not sure though if it makes sense to put these destinations all as individual bullets. We need a way to kind of group some of them in specific areas/subgroups, for at least some of these collections of sites which I want people to see are all close to each other or in a logical order, but which from the descriptions once in the area, they can pick what they like and skip the others... the key being that they see clearly they're all in one area, or along a route. If there's a way to do this with bullets (like a separate heading for a sub-area like "Ashtarak and Kasagh River Gorge monuments", and then bullets below that, this can work for me as a workable solution. No problem. When I started here, I too disagreed about a lot of things, but I have come to respect the consensus on the way things work. Keep an open mind and know that your work is appreciated, even if you don't hear much about it. When I started about 2 and a half years ago, I created a big page from scratch for Hamamatsu in Japan, where I live. (Incidentally, its Eat section still reflects my lack of understanding of our style guide at the time and needs to be reworked into the 3 standard price sections.) But anyway, I did it mostly by myself, since it's not a well known place and there are no other contributors who know it, but since that time, I have actually met a number of travellers using the article I contributed to, and have noticed that on occasion information in the article gets updated by other users in a fairly timely manner (i.e. when a bar closes, someone removes the listing). Ah, I have no idea how I managed to get rid of those. I put the descriptions back in. Don't think they need their own header at this point though, since there are only three things in the See section anyway. But anyway, yeah, I've never given Edmonton much thought before. Calgary is the furthest north I've been in that area, and yes, the only thing I'd heard about there was the mall, so it's good to hear about other attractions there. Oh god, do you have any idea how much I hate that mall? That place is a hole! It destroyed the downtown in the '80s (luckily now it's on the rebound) and it just contributes to the "precious" suburban life. Edmonton is probably somewhat similar to Austin, TX, you've been in Texas, so I'd think you'd know. We have a quite large skyline, tomorrow I think, I will take pictures of the "dense" angles and upload them here. This is mostly because we have such a large residential high rise community-Oliver, but downtown itself has a lot of highrises/res highrises. US cities have tiny skyline in comparison (Edmonton probably has a bigger skyline than Houston or Miami, both 5X the size, heh)..Anyways...what stuff have you learned in particular? If it's something big, like a lot of things under the same topic just list/say small thing about them. I really want to know, unless, of course, you don't want to, ehehe. Holla Tex, not sure I agree on your removal of the Lonely Planet phrase - it might just have been reflex - but I do think it has a place, obviously i can't quote it because of copyright issues, but it's outright wrong what they write, and a subject of much discussion at the hostels i stayed at while i was doing the trip. Personally I avoided Platzkart because of LP's description, until an Aussie dragged me into one. LP has a scary authority considering how loose their research is, and because if this I personally think it deserves a mention (every bloody traveler i met on that trip had a copy of the LP guide). Learn

Nothing on Wikitravel is for long-term residents. This is why we don't allow real estate listings, retirement information, relocation assistance info, job search information, long-term employment statistics, public school information, or full-time higher education programs. The description of the Cope section from the article template is as follows:

This section is for all those little items that people need to know when they're in a city. Where can you do laundry? Go to a gym? Get computers repaired? Anything that has to do with the practicalities of daily life should go here.

Don't put something here when it could fit in one of the other sections. If there's nothing to put in this section, leave it out.

Hey Texugo! How has it been? Anyways, I won't revert it, I'd rather have discussion as to the skyline view from Forest Heights Park. For Edmonton. I am sorry if it is offensive, but when you look at most American cities <1.7mill, you get this[4], [5], [6], [7], [8], etc. Which-no offense-reinforces that there are few that are different form this. Small, blobs of a financial district- though the towers are tall, the skyscraper area is small and mostly is of brutalist office towers. Maybe I searched bad examples, show me some more. Don't come out with New York or Minneapolis, I know those are different. I am sorry. But, I'd like to hear your opinion. It is also a known fact as to why Canadian cities have exceedingly higher density to their American similar sised-in the 60s, 70s and 80s, there was a lotta urban decay and big racial issues in the US which made the development put off. In Canada, there was some decay, but not much so they kept building, but I am saying there is an angle of Edmonton where you can get that kind of American feel, as there is for Montreal (Boston, Rochester) and Calgary (Denver)and Winnipeg(Salt Lake City). edmontonenthusiast [ee] ^.T.A.L.K. 12:40, 29 November 2008 (EST).

Of course Japanese skylines are different. Very, very, very different. But the difference if any between Canadian and American skylines is really not that remarkable at all. As for the Depot place, the phrase I removed was "This place is just that regular power centre," which makes it sound like the reader already knows what to expect there, rather than actually giving the information. The term "power center" itself is a Canadianism. I don't know if the term has caught on in the states or not, but you are the first person I've ever heard use it, and personally I had to look it up to see what you are talking about. Re:Dalton Highway map

You changed the name of the map on this page from [[Image:Dalton Highway Map.gif... to [[Image:Dalton_Highway_Map.gif... then, two edits later deleted the imagebox because you said there was no image. Also, you said that .gif should not be used. According to the image use page on Wikitravel Shared, "The GIF format should not be used, since it is technically inferior to PNG, which has about the same purpose." Well, the map was the only such map I could find online and it was created in .gif format. The only way I can think of changing it from .gif to .png would be to take a screenshot on my computer, but since the screen is only 15" the map would be shrunk in size and much of the text would be too small to read. If the file format is inferior, I would assume that you would want a better format, but would it be acceptable to keep .gif format in lieu of a better format. I created the List of US Interstates as a complement to the expedition to provide a list of the interstates for users to create articles. I figured that once the list is complete it could be a subsection of List of itineraries. I'm still learning all the rules and customs around here, I'm not perfect yet. Hey Brian, I think the routeboxes look very cool, and I'm interested to see how they develop. I still don't, however, feel like I have a very good idea of how they will work sitewide. So for the time being I'll just add a "ditto" to what Ryan already said on the Routes Expedition talk page. Jasper NP

Hi Texago, thanks for the comments on the Jasper routebox. I think I did that the first day before I had figured out it wouldn't work. I'd still like to mention the national parks (because they're a big draw themselves), so I've set up the routes so it reads: Jasper (in Jasper NP). I've also updated the Jasper NP routebox so it reads the same as the Jasper routebox. Let me know if you think this works or not. Cheers Shaund 22:21, 1 January 2009 (EST)
