:Lemme see. I suspect this is going to be of low utility for foreigners, so I will probably be setting a low priority for this. &mdash; Ravikiran 10:10, 20 February 2007 (EST)
::Hey, I didn't mean to hurry you in any way. But I don't see why this is of low utility for foreigners, I mean, if you don't believe phrasebooks are useful, that's different, but... BTW, do you speak Marathi much, I've totally lost touch with the lingo - I've been in Delhi for 5 years now
:) (sigh!!!!) &mdash; Upamanyuwikitravel 04:14, 22 February 2007 (EST)
::: Because if ever I work up the enthusiasm to work on a phrasebook, I will work on the Hindi phrasebook first as it will be vastly more useful to foreigners. The Marathi phrasebook is less important because I can't think of a place where Marathi is used, but Hindi isn't understood. After Hindi, it will probably be Kannada, my mother tongue. But in the first place, I have to figure out how to type in Indic fonts. I can speak Marathi - I studied it in school. &mdash; Ravikiran 04:30, 22 February 2007 (EST)
::::Well, Ravi, you've got a point there, most Marathis seem to manage basic Hindi. However, for OTBP locations, Marathi can be useful. And even I need to figure out how to type in Hindi. The best thing to do is to open the Hindi wikipedia, and there's a toolbox below the save page option where you can click letter-by-letter and type. Alas, it's painfully slow, took me 5 whole minutes to type an average sentence! So do you speak any other language apart from English, Hindi, Marathi and Kannada?? Have you lived in Bombay all your life? I'm just curious. BTW, do you think I should start a Bengali phrasebook. It's my mother-tongue and although I don't study it at school I'm quite good at it. Unlike Maharashtrians, getting a Bengali to speak Hindi is next to impossible. !! And it will also be useful for travellers visiting Bangladesh?? P.S. Am I allowed to start my own article or do I have to ask an admin first?  Upamanyuwikitravel 04:25, 23 February 2007 (EST)
:::::I've lived in Bombay almost all my life. As to the Marathi phrasebook, a lot of stuff about Devnagari can be simply copied and suitably modified for Marathi. And yes, you are absolutely allowed, no, encouraged to start new articles, whether about destinations, itineraries, travel topics, phrasebooks or even policies. You do not have to ask permission from anyone, least of all admins. It is a good idea to understand our goals and non-goals before making major changes, but it is better to make an honest mistake than do nothing at all. If you know that you are proposing a major change, then it is better to build a consensus first. It is a bad idea to use your editing privileges as a weapon against an existing consensus. But apart from that, anything that you do in good faith is okay. Also, admins do not have any special say in policy making because they are admins. Strictly speaking, our job is entirely clerical. We just implement policies and decisions arrived through the consensus of all Wikitravellers.  It so happens that admins are also longtime users, so we tend to have a good idea of policies and goals, but we're supposed respect people's views for their content, not because of who holds those views. &mdash; Ravikiran 06:22, 23 February 2007 (EST)
I'm so jealous of you Indians and your damn multiple language abilities... that you actually have a choice of which phrasebooks you feel like working on still amazes me. I can't even manage Spanish, and I studied it in school and have lived closely around it my whole life, whereas you guys often have 3 or 4 languages/dialects under your belt by high school. Anyway, I'm a fan... I miss your country already... - Cacahuate 17:32, 22 February 2007 (EST)
:Well, let's see. I learnt 3 languages at school English, Hindi and Marathi, so I can speak read and write them. In addition, my parents came over from Karnataka, where they speak Kannada, no wait - they actually came over from Dakshina Kannada where the native language is Tulu, a scriptless language. I learnt to read Kannada because after a time I did not want to wait for my mom to read out stories for me, so I can read and speak it pretty well, though I can't write it because I can't remember the script very well. However, Kannada script follows the same pattern as Hindi or Marathi (Think of a language that uses the same alphabet as English, but with different symbols for A, B, C, etc. ) So I am hoping that if I learn to type in Hindi, there will be some way to magically transform it into Kannada.) I can understand Tulu, but cannot speak it very well. It does not have a script, so fortunately, I do not have to learn to read or write it. On the other hand, Tulu is the craziest language ever as far as dialects go. The dialect not only changes every 10 km, different castes speak different dialects of Tulu. The Tulu spoken by us Brahmins is different from the Tulu's spoken by everyone else. I thought I understood everything about Tulu, till one day, I used "Jovu" to refer to a girl instead of "Jevu" and my interlocutor was mildly amused that I was using the dialect of the Shivallis (a different subcaste of Brahmins). Till then I hadn't even known that they spoke a different dialect. (I really need to write this up for the Talk section of DK)
:Well, that's enough bragging about my linguistic abilities, which are really average for an Indian :) I can understand  a bit of Tamil because I stayed for two years in Chennai and a bit of Gujarati by being around Gujaratis... and if I try hard perhaps I can read and understand Sanskrit. ;) &mdash; Ravikiran 06:22, 23 February 2007 (EST)
::Wow Ravi, that makes 7, English, Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Tulu, Gujarati and Tamil. And that is definitely more than an average Indians. In Delhi, where I currently live (but not for long, I bet, after school I'm going to say bye to this pathetic place:( ), most of the people speak 2 languages, max 3.
::Unfortunately, I only speak 5, English, Hindi, Bengali (my mother-tongue), Sanskrit (at school, and I'll ditch Hindi next grade and continue with it) and well, a bit of basic French since I go to my classmate's house every Sunday to teach her Sanskrit in return for which she teaches me French!!! (I'm also planning to sign up at the Alliance Francaise next Feb) I used to speak a bit of German and Spanish (I stayed for a few months in Lausanne, actually 6 weeks, so I got an uncle to teach me both, he teaches at the Institute of Foreign Languages, Hyderabad). Well, that's all, and I can read and write in all of them, although that's just 3 scripts (Roman, Devanagiri and Bengali/Assamese). deindenting. We absolutely need someone with local knowledge of Bangalore. Districting is not something that can be done through research. Here's what I'd do - leave a comment on the talk page for Bangalore on Wikipedia asking any localite to contact you on your talk page. I am sure someone will respond. Once they do, explain the problem and try to get a solution. I'll chip in with advice if needed. ::Yeah Mumbai isn't a guide yet because all the districts have to be at least usable before that happens. That will be easily rectified, but making it a star is another cup of tea. Hey, we now have 5 users and my friend Himanshu will sign up today, that'll make it 6. And a rather interesting mix too (a South, East and West Indian each, a Nepali and even a Californian!)
It's amazing how the Hindi wikitravel has already inspired an international audience to join!
I hope you don't mind if I choose to act as the go-between. You can vote against me if you wish, and I'll also nominate you, because you're the only person with a near-native understanding of Hindi. ==Cricket W-CUP==
I supppose you follow cricket. Could you explain to me why we desperately needed to defeat Bermuda by over 250 runs to make it through to the Super 8? And 2nd q, did we end up defeating them by that margin? I just saw us score 413 and that was it. Nothing's in the papers got the matches get over at dawn IST and I couldn't ask my friends because today was a school-hoilday. Upamanyuwikitravel • <small>( Talk )</small> • <small>( Travel ) •</small> 08:09, 20 March 2007 (EDT)
:Well, India's group consisted of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bermuda. Only two out of 4 can go to the Super 8.  The likely scenario was:
* India defeats Bangladesh, Bermuda (and maybe Sri Lanka) &mdash; 2 wins/3 wins.
* Sri Lanka defeats Bangladesh, Bermuda (and maybe India) &mdash; 2 wins/3 wins
* Bangladesh loses all matches except to Bermuda  &mdash; 1 win.
* Bermuda loses everything &mdash; 0 wins.
:In that case India and Sri Lanka would have been through to Super 8. But unfortunately, India lost to Bangladesh. So now the best scenario for India is:
* India defeats Sri Lanka and  Bermuda  &mdash; 2 wins
* Sri Lanka defeats Bangladesh, Bermuda &mdash; 2 wins
* Bangladesh defeats India, Bermuda  &mdash; 2 wins.
* Bermuda loses everything &mdash; 0 wins.
:Then it all comes down to the Net Run Rate. So we need to win by huge margins against both Sri Lanka and Bermuda or we are out. Unless, of course, Sri Lanka loses to Bangladesh, in which case, Sri Lanka is out. Hope that helped. &mdash; Ravikiran 11:27, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

If it is anywhere on the Central line, it is convenient to take a train and on the Western line, well if you want to take Public transport it is still the train, but you will have to changeover at Dadar. Hey there!
I attempted my first map... can you have a look when you've got a second since you've been there and tell me if things seem to be in the right place? No doubt the roads aren't all that accurate, but I think they convey the general idea  ;)  I'll try to work a little more on the article too soon, and hopefully get it in shape for OTBP. &ndash; <font color="green">cacahuate</font>  <small><font color="blue">talk</font></small> 06:19, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

Hey there! A new user dropped by and left a note on :hi:वार्ता:मुख्य पृष्ठ, but I don't understand it, and Upamanyu is on an extended vacation... would you mind checking it out? &ndash; <font color="green">cacahuate</font>  <small><font color="blue">talk</font></small> 15:42, 11 July 2007 (EDT)
:Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he's criticizing the Hindi that is being used/abused on the site. Can you also take a look if you have a second at some of the city articles that I've been creating... if I'm mangling the spelling too much I might ease off, as I think that might look silly to potential Hindi speaking contributors. And for the record it's not my fault that there are 4 "d's" and 4 "t's". Who invented that anyway?  ;)  On the upside, there are some great movies that come out of that mess of a language. I just went to see Jhoom Barabar Jhoom... can you also explain to me Amitabh's outfit? Whoa. &ndash; <font color="green">cacahuate</font>  <small><font color="blue">talk</font></small> 00:11, 12 July 2007 (EDT)
::Sadly, my wife has better taste than I, which means that I haven't seen any Hindi movies for quite some time... In fact, none after Eklavya - that movie traumatized her with its stupidity while I completely enjoyed it. Secondly, the new user is probably a she... पूर्णिमा (i.e Poornima) is generally a female name, meaning full moon.. Thirdly, she is not criticizing any of your edits, but the translation of Main Page. Upamanyu translated it as मुख्य पृष्ठ (Mukhya Prusht) which literally translates to "Main Page" (or even more literally, Chief page), But Mitul and Poornima are arguing that it should be मुखपृष्ठ (MukhPrusht) which, though it literally means "Face Page", is the accepted Hindi word for the front page of a book. I think they have a point... I see that Upamanyu misunderstood Mitul's point and thought that Mitul was objecting to the space between Mukhya and Prusht. Spaces between words are kind of less important in Hindi than in English. And where's the boy gone? School has started here in India! &mdash; Ravikiran 01:22, 12 July 2007 (EDT)

This website is the most useful for travellers in Indian railways. Why removing it? Yann 15:23, 24 April 2012 (EDT)

Because it is a secondary source and violates our External links policy. More importantly, while this may be a good link, the article will become a link magnet and attract all kinds of links. In fact the edit I removed had two links. Ravikiran 01:21, 25 April 2012 (EDT)
