While I understand your motivation, I think you were out of line to block EE over his edits to his own Talk page; there's no rule on WT that says you can't blank it. I have no issue with your previous blocks of EE. No, check the history of my talk page again, which is extremely short right now, and notice the edit warring. Check the block log as well—I did not block him following edit warring on his page (which I ended via a protect). I blocked him immediately following repeated abusive comments on my talk page. And what I said about his userspace seems very clear to me. He has the right to make his case there in whatever manner he chooses. That does not include erasing other people's comments. As I said on your talk page, undoing my good faith block and protection, and I still can't see how these violated any policy, was inappropriate, and caused a good deal more trouble than it resolved. --Peter ^Talk 13:52, 7 January 2009 (EST)

User block 2009-01-09

Hi Peter,

Just wondering what the block situation with Edmontonenthusiast tonight was about. I see nothing in his contrib log before the initial ban was put in place, and there is no obvious reason given for that block. Does an admin undo remove the edit record from the user's contrib log? You comment about Marc being w.in bounds of policy I find hard to justify when the raon of edit war-ing is given, but with no obvious trail. If things are removed from the user's contrib log on an admin undo, can I strongly suggest these be avoided so that the history is preserved so that people can see the edit war that was going on.

To be quite frank, I am starting to tire of this whole situation between yourself and Ee... While you are an admin (and a sysop?) and therefore a community member I has respect for, the constant battle between yourself and Ee is starting to get overboard. Yes, I know other admins have been involved, but it is your name that I see far more than anyone else's when dealing with Ee. I am not condoning his behaviour... I agree he has acted childishly at times, and against advice of others. However, he does appear to be trying to take things on board, but it's also clear that the 2 of you are now merely provoking each other, and it's going to cause more harm than good. The only way you are going to get through to Ee is to ban him. Remeber, he is young and so probably not used to this sort of collaborative environment and working with other people. However, the war this is turning into is not going to help him develop those skills; and, it has to be said, he is the future!

Can I suggest that you step back from the situation... There are other admins who Ee seems to listen to and who are, perhaps, more willing to take the time to re-educate him without things descending into a war between 2 people. Yes, I know others have tried and lost patience, but I would much rather someone who can get through to Ee take over and try and deal with this is a more constructive way. Plus there are many of us on here who are happy to do monitoring work to take care of any obvious problems.

I'm sorry if you are unhappy with anything I have said here Peter, and I hope you understand I am trying to take this from a totally neutral standpoint. I've not been here as long as you, and realise that as someone who has risen to the rank of admin you have put a lot of time and effort into the site. But I want to be clear that I am not taking anyone's side... As I said above, Ee has really not helped himself, but I do feel both parties here are now just provoking each other, which is only going to spiral into anarchy or a lot of bad fallout. However, I am just trying to be honest and offer a view on this from someone who has tried to remain as outside of the situation as possible.

As Ee himself would say, Keep Smiling! and I am more than happy to listen to anything anyone else has to say on the matter and try to find a constructive way forward for everyone for the sake of the project.

Peter's the flavor of the moment but by no means acting alone or without support, this situation has nothing to do with Peter... we've all taken turns. EE's age has nothing to do with this either, a 16 year old ran the Spanish version nearly singlehandedly for ages, the Hindi version was launched by a 14 year old, and star articles have been written by 18 year olds... all who had the desire and took the time to watch how a wiki community works, and adjust their actions accordingly. "To be quite frank," your comment following the first paragraph strikes me as uninformed grandstanding, and I'm at pains to think of a way to respond to it that would be productive. To answer your question, though, I blocked EE on this occassion to restore the block placed there by User:Gorilla Jones, which had been removed by User:Sapphire without discussion. This action came on the heels of another admin undoing a block I had placed, and after I tried to make it clear that I thought it was inappopriate to do so without discussion. So I restored this particular block in the hopes of being as clear as possible that admins shouldn't be warring over blocks. Doing so started this discussion.

As to why the block was placed in the first place, it would appear it was due to edit warring this edit. Uninformed Grandstanding? Care to elaborate? Is what you call anyone expressing an opinion that doesn't fit with your personal way of thinking? Am I not allowed to express a frank opinion? I have been watching what's been going on but I have tried not to get involved. However, the constant war that is going on is really starting to detract from my enjoyment of the project. I notice tonight you reverted an edit by Ee [[3]] which, in gneral, I see nothing wrong with. In fact, to ensure I wasn't missing something I even asked someone living with me to read the comment, and she too failed to see any obvious reason why it would be reverted. My only objection would be to the 1-line comment "I don't mean to be rude in any way, but Cacahuate, you basically encouraged Peter in all of this," but I do not feel this warrants a revert (which may trigger an edit war) but could be better dealt with by a follow-up warning against the use of that sort of comment.

Regarding your feedback, I am not disagreeing with the policy of temp banning for edit warring; however it was not overly obvious where the edit war that lead to the temp ban being put in place. Whilst I agree his comment is not in best taste, I can kind of see how he might be getting slightly frustrated by all this, and has perhaps wiki-ed in anger. All I know is that I'm looking forward to being on the road for a few days this coming week and so I can get away from Wikitravel for a bit, and hope this all calms down by the time I get back. Well one can live in hope!

And Ee, that comment above is just the kind of whinging that's caused some people to take a dislike of you. Don't react to everything that is said about you. Sometimes you just have to keep a low profile and let people calm down and try and build up again with a clean slate. Question about external link

Hi Thank you for for the advice. I am new on wikitravel and I have read policy on external links but I do not understand what part is wrong with link I added? There is similar kind of that link I saw in some other page and then I add. Example in article cappadocia Get around write cappadocia Tour Travel then link to http://www.cappadociahotairballoon.com/ which page is about hot air ballooning tour in cappadocia. Then I add tour and travel www.araratturkey.com that includes all cappadocia hiking tour and information which one erased. Is it violation of policy because I do not add direct link like http://www.araratturkey.com/hiking_cappadocia.php or is it something else? Please explain to I do not make same mistake again. Australia Map

East to west:

• Are red lines motorways?

If so, there are a few more of them, right across Australia.

The Pacific Hwy, Sydney to Brisbane is far from a motorway.

Bits of the Highway 31 aren't either.

• Alphanumerics are used in states that don't use them yet.

Strictly speaking the M31 only begins just north of the Victorian border at the moment, the rest is just national highway 31. I think most people will get M31 though.

The A32 isn't used in NSW (except on some obscure intersections). Most people won't know this road, and will have difficulty following it.

• Some numbered routes aren't marked.

National Route 1 isn't marked between Sydney -> Melbourne, or Melbourne -> Adelaide, even though the roads are.

• Hobart is a little misplaced

Hobart looks a little inland, I think the dot should be almost on the coast.

• Route 20, looks like it goes from Adelaide to Canberra, but it doesn't really. It finishes on the Hume near Wagga Wagga, and you would need to take the Hume North to Yass to join the Barton (National Highway 25) into Canberra.

• National Route 66, is signposted National A2, in Queensland, but I think national 66 is probably still reasonable.

• Some minor roads are included

The road north from Cairna would appear to be the Penisula Developmental Road. To go up there, is a bit of a serious undertaking. Probably a bit misleading to mark it in the same line type as the rest. The road to Cooktown is sealed, and fine. Along the coast to Cape Tribulation is fine, even National Route 1, may be a better alternative to show.

• The Sunshine Coast looks odd, when the Gold Coast is actually a bigger destination. Less room to add it though, I guess.

• Great Barrier Reef looks a little like land, and the blue dot on it makes no sense to me. Why there?

• Maybe consider adding some destinations

Alice Springs in the centre is common

Broome up in the North West. Its a popular tourist destination, and the area looks a little sparse.

• National Highway Shields, National Route shields, Alpha-numeric shields are a little misused.

The A32 isn't a national highway

Neither is the National Route 1 to Brisbane, past Newcastle (New South Wales), although this may change, with Austlink now taking responsibility for the road.

The Western Australia routes, 94, 95 are national highways, as are the parts of the national route 1, that join to them (not the bits around the coast)

I'll add anything else I think of. Have you considered just putting the national highways and national route 1 on the map? That would give both the major through routes, and most of the major touring routes, consistently and without too much clutter. --Inas 00:23, 12 February 2009 (EST)

Looks much better! I think adding three bits of Highway 1 (National Route 1), popular with travellers.

I think it then would make a very good summary map.

I've looked at it, but feel out of my depth, since I don't know the first thing about the area (my Japan travels never went north of Kyoto). From looking at the discussion, it definitely seems that the various areas included in the administrative boundaries of the city of Hamamatsu should be broken into separate articles, but the disagreement is over whether to cover outlying "towns" as towns, or to group them as districts. Australia's Northern Territory

Hi Peter, I wanted to get back in contact with you about the Northern Territory aricles I have been working on re your comments a few months ago.

"Your work is really looking great! I took a look around the Northern Territory articles, and spotted a couple issues.

First, ideally, specific listings should be placed in individual destination guides (cities & parks) rather than the region articles. I'd only include listings in the region articles when the town they are in is too small to write about, or if they are off in the wilderness and too far away from any town to include them in a city/town article. So the region articles should be mostly just prose.

Second, all linked destinations must have at least usable status to consider the region article a guide; for the region to be a star, all linked destinations must be at guide status. So articles like Top End Australia, for example, should be created and filled out.

Koryakia

I merged the couple of sentences about Koryakia with Kamchatka and turned the former into a redirect page. Sertmann mentioned on my talk page that you spent a lot of time with the Russian hierarchy, so I thought I'd mention that here. Unless the Kamchatka article were retitled "Kamchatka Krai", the Kamchatka peninsula includes almost all of Koryakia...so to me it seemed like a no-brainer to merge the two. Deleting Copyright Violations

Pleas see Wikitravel:Votes for undeletion#Several Copyright Violations. I think you are being a wee bit zealous deleting articles with valid names, even when the user is spamming the page creations. At least tag the violations with a {{copyvio}} until the user next edits the page, then kill the violations if the user ignores the message. Comments in the wikitext might also help. I know it is a bit more work than simply deleting the pages, but the pages are going to come back eventually if you don't take the extra effort now. - Huttite 09:20, 25 February 2009 (EST)

I've responded on the vfu page. But to quote yourself, "I fail to see the need to ever delete any wiki page that is not either (i) totally off topic and has no hope of redirection, (ii) spam, (iii) a copyright violation (iv) is offensive or (v) causes a technical issue or problem."

More to the point, it is bad site architecture to require more work in cleaning than in creating. For that reason, it takes more steps to add content than for an admin to revert it. That is not the case if a user spams undesirable page creations, and the community is required to go through and painstakingly clean it up. We already have a lot of undesirable edits go unpatrolled on Wikitravel, and the extra time I take to clean up this user's page creations, in addition to the significant time spent trying to steer him in the right direction, is time taken away from patrolling other edits. --Peter ^Talk 13:39, 26 February 2009 (EST)

Complete sentences and grammar make communication easier. You can also sign your name automatically by typing four tildes after your comment (~~~~). Adding pictures of business establishments is frowned upon as touting. So is adding listings to multiple pages. So is promotional language. This is all covered in the policy articles you have been asked to read and follow. I noticed you made revisions to these pages. I have been corresponding with Stefan (sertmann) and he was the one that actually made the edits to go with the picture and the link to the front royal page. please review my talk to see that he aggred that this was OK as we are trying to actually build info on to these pages to hopefully build tourism in these areas vs competing areas. sertmann and i discussed at length touting, etc. and he agreed that this small blurb with pic and link to the front royal page was acceptable.

Detroit

Not quite sure why you've twice reverted my warning boxes on Detroit. Detroit is an extraordinarily dangerous place that nobody should ever visit unless they absolutely, positively have to. The entire city (literally the ENTIRE city other than about a ten block area immediately around the Rennaissance Center) is nothing but a giant, abandoned wasteland full of drug addicts and gang members. Inexplicably, the Detroit page seems to actually encourage people to visit this terrible place. We don't encourage people to visit Mogadishu or Baghdad, and Detroit is the closest equivalent we have in the Western Hemisphere, so I'm confused as to why there aren't any warning boxes there. Hawaiian rentals

Actually, Hawaiianbeachrentals.com is not my site. I have contributed a bit to these Hawaii pages and I was just trying to put good info in there. I was trying to get the Maui accommodations started and Hawaiianbeachrentals.com is just the most comprehensive site - plus they come up #1 for Maui vacation rentals so I thought you would want to give your visitors the best site possible.

My site is actually Napali.com and Kauaiexplorer.com (I have others, but these are my vacation sites). I was thinking about building out the Na Pali section (as it is quite blank) but I think your guidelines say not to link out to your own site, so I don't know if this would be worth it to me. Could I link back to my sites if I completed the page?

I read the guidelines you sent me. Thanks for pointing out the apartment aggregators policy to me. I see several links within the "Stay" sections violating this policy. For instance (on Kauai), these are all vacation management companies similar to Hawaiianbeachrentals.com:

Coastline Cottages at Poipu Beach - Coastline cottages is a vacation rental management company with several rentals in Poipu Makahuena - points to Luxury Quest which is a vacation rental management company servicing areas outside of Hawaii as well PoipuKai Resort - Goes to Suite Paradise who manages rentals across several properties in Poipu.

I believe you are quite confused. Your agency is not a hotel, it is a rental agency. You are right, however, that regardless of what actions I may take on this wiki, I cannot "cancel" your hotel (especially since you do not have one), but I don't see how this is relevant.

Your rental agency is linked, and enjoys a rather special position on the main Rome article sleep section. Adding additional links to the district articles, including Trastevere, is considered touting.

But since you are quoting our policy, please notice the phrase: Even if your business fits into more than one of these sections it should be listed only once -and you have provided yourself with an answer to your question. If it bookable through your website or by calling you, it's redundant, even though it's run independently of the apartment rentals, not matter what you've written on Expedia or Tripadvisor.

New US Regions Map

I think a few more things could be added to the map:

• A few more cities: AK has 9 while MN, FL, & HI are important state w/only 1-2 cities. There's space to add Duluth, Tampa, Jacksonville, & Hilo.
• More national parks: Everglades (FL), Big Bend (TX), Badlands/Mt.Rushmore (SD), & a couple in AK (Denali, Gates of the Arctic, &/or Wrangell St.Ellias).

Using my knowledge & not comparing exactly with a map, there seems to be quite a few mistakes on the new map.

• Honolulu is on Oahu (it's currently in the middle of the ocean).

I realize that anyone planning on driving would buy a map, but for some reason these few jumped out at me:

• I-10 does not go through Austin...but rather San Antonio (which is larger, so it should probably be labeled rather than Austin).
• I-15 goes all the way to the border, it doesn't end in Helena.
• Montreal should be further east. I-87 continues straight north to Montreal, it doesn't swing west to get to the city. For that matter, why have some routes continued into Canada, while others don't? I-87 continues to Montreal, & I-15 continues to Calgary. For that matter, why are roads in Canada & Mexico even marked? If you plan on keeping the roads in them, could you include a road through Calgary with an arrow heading north with "To Alaska" and a simmilar thing going SE from Whitehorse (AK could use a couple of roads too).

Categories like "guide articles" or "star articles" are pretty straightforwardly useful, since they allow us to quickly find our best articles. The "outline articles" category isn't useful by itself, but it is nice to have the number relative to the number of usables and guides to track the development of the site—hopefully someday we will have more usables than outlines. The article statuses are useful for a couple more reasons: 1) motivating contributors to improve articles, 2) showing contributors what our standards are, and how to get an article up to those standards, and 3) helping readers understand whether they are reading a new, undeveloped article, or one that really meets the standards the site is aiming to provide. --Peter ^Talk 16:58, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

Rosemont

What's the rationale behind redirecting Rosemont? Though it does enormous business as the O'Hare Hotel City, it's also got two significant concert venues in the All-State Arena (aka Rosemont Horizon) and the Rosemont Theatre, and the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center is probably second only to McCormick Place on the Chicago-area convention circuit. I believe there's a push to put some casinos there, too. The notion that you have a right for compensation from me is quite a bold assertion. I did not upload your photo, I had not seen your photo, I had not edited the page it was on, I do not "own" the site on which it was hosted, nor was I even aware of Wikitravel's existence at the time it was uploaded. I do, however, welcome you to file a lawsuit against me—I'm confident you would lose said lawsuit, and I would like the legal precedent that it would set. I will be blunt, I think it very unlikely that you are going to get the compensation you are after—I really have no idea how you would be able to.

I did not see your earlier post, I was confused but based on the listings requirements. We run out of all the locations I posted. We have 3 Offices in different cities and 6 camp spots that are located in each of the sections I posted. How do you manage those who have a business that expand multiple articles and sections. Thanks, Offices=Staging Locations. We call them offices these are the places where people check in and get fitted for there equipment. We have several outfitting locations as well as different overnight facilities where travelers stay and leave equipment. It is general to the region the Arkansas river has many attractions that don't fall into a city. It is the region. We don't need comprehensive lists of hotels, as we aim to be a travel guide, not a yellow pages. Most of the listings in the Tampa article are worthless, with no descriptions, no pricing information, etc., but they are what's left after I spent some good time trimming that list (it was way too long). The listing you added was not any worse than the others in the article, but it was still worthless, and I don't want to see that list grow pointlessly. The fact that Intercontinental Hotels Group is Wikitravel's most prolific spammer, makes me extra inclined to remove listings added by their agents. If you'd like to see such a listing stay, make sure to include exact price ranges, as well as a description that does not violate Wikitravel:Don't tout (no promotional language!), and which conveys what is unique about your hotel.

In short, if your quality of your listing is better than the others in the article, it will be the least likely to get deleted. --Peter ^Talk 17:03, 1 May 2009 (EDT)

Mauritius attractions

I was very surprised to receive your second message. Please note that I fully understand and 100% agree that the first text I edited and uploaded to Wikitravel was subjective and you had a very good reason to delete it.

With that, the second text I edited (please find it here below), is a descriptive text which refers to the attractions and excursions currently offered to visitors of Mauritius. I made sure to include all the activities currently available in Mauritius.

The main intention was to provide a full list of activities, so readers of the Wikitravel website will have the knowledge and the freedom to choose the activities they want to do the most.

The only connection to an individual business was made in a separate section of the text, at the very end of the text, in the form of an external link.

Accordingly, I really hope you will approve this text, so it will appear on the Wikitravel website.

I know it's quite late in doing this, but I wanted to apologize for the way I had acted months ago. I understand your frustration with me and appreciate your initial patience with me. I am completely sorry to have drug out a bunch of stuff around February. I know it wasn't just me, I know, but as you know it was mainly a me-you thing.

I know after the long mess that had occured, it is truly hard to forgive someone, I would probably still be furious at you, but I'm not.

Quite frankly, I think it was just a problem of you or I doing something, then the other person doing something and it escalating. You and I were just at each others throats. Sometimes I started it, others you, but you know it's crazy how much stuff happened from November to February and I don't even think I remember how the fuss between us (and other members) even started in the first place.

I want to applaud you and others for sticking to your guns so to speak. I really appreciate all the work you've done to the site - even just looking at the maps you've done - amazing work. Most of wikitravel's articles would be much less in quality if it hadn't been for your work on Chicago. That must've taken a lot of energy. I know by doing just probably a fraction of that in Edmonton.

Anyways, what I was really wondering was if you'd forgive me, and that we can just move on. No grudges, no nothing. What is done is done.

I may pop in from time to time to edit some articles, and what not on Wikitravel now, but don't worry I'll stay out of your hairs So to speak. Thanks for reading.

Chicago/Southwest Side buy listings

hi peter,

i noticed you took off my listing for the video strip shop in chicago's southwest side. I actually do shop for videos when traveling to keep the kids busy when we are indoors and i think its more important than the listing already showing for "western wear" and "fake puke." The shop even delivered to us which made it very easy on us. When we did go there the owner actually gave us a bunch of places to take the kids this weekend.

The reason is simple enough—I can't find a central office address for your company on your website, which puts it in violation of our policy on apartment rental agencies. Were this isolated, I'd just ignore it, but it's one of many pointless public spats—you've certainly been at odds with me in a very public, insulting, and thoroughly unnecessary way in the past, rather bizarrely assuming good faith on behalf of a user just returning from Wikitravel's only ban, while assuming bad faith on my part, in spite of all the work I've done with you, and on the site more generally. I wish you would devote more energy to using the sysop privileges to help out with more uncontroversial and routine janitorial work, and leave this one be (as I have, for that matter).

I don't really know what else to say on this matter. I think your community interactions and work on Wikitravel outside of this issue have been exemplary and most valuable, and it's been a personal pleasure to work with you. On just about anything but dealing with unwanted edits, I'd be happy to consult you first to tap your good insight and creative thinking. This is why I nominated you for sysop status in the first place. I think I understand your motivations here—I've tried hard—but I do think they are misguided, and I really don't approve of your handling of a situation that has (to our collective shame) become very delicate. The Kauai Visitors Bureau gives us the info to put on the page including closed and open times (which doesn't go on their page). Our page has 10 times more content then their page and is supported by the Kauai Lifeguards and Fire Department. You can call up the Kauai Visitors Bureau and ask them what is Kauai's official beach site and they will tell you kauaiexplorer.com (they link to us from their home page). And the official kauai website, kauai.gov links to kauaiexplorer.com as Kauai Beach Explorer on their main vacation page here [8]. But I'm not here to argue with you. I just don't understand why on Wikipedia's Oahu page here [9], under "Beaches", you link out to Hawaiigaga.com. If Kauaiexplorer.com is not the official Kauai beach site, then Hawaiigaga.com is definitely not the official Oahu beach site. Manta Ecuador Article

I finished the Manta article and removed and rewritten what you suspected was what got the copyright violation tag. I also organized it to better fit with site article guidelines. It appears that much information was written by ESL persons and cleaned it up as much as possible. A lot of google searches show that other newly added information may have been copied as well. It was really hard in many cases to tell which direction information was duplicated. I believe that the edits I made will resolve any CV issues. Some of the beaches listed, I could not find reference to via google or on google maps search. I left the references in place and if anyone finds fault with them, I figure that can be dealt with at a later date. I think you will find the rewrite to be a much better version than before. Page deprotections

I've been looking through the logs, and my theory is that deleting and undeleting a page resets the protections. You did that to the pub on April 3rd, a few hours after setting the move protection, and it looks like that might have also been the order of events for your own user page today? It's been edited since I wrote it, but yep, it was a Baltimore lover that wrote it. I've spent very little time in Pittsburgh, but it struck me as a really attractive and laid back place totally at odds with what we tend to expect from post-industrial cities. Baltimore on the other hand, it's a city that's not often described as lovely. It's public perception, I think, is run down and dangerous (outside the Harbor). First Thank you for your consideration. However let me address some issuses evolving the inclusion for wikitravel. 1st the keys are not picked up at our office because all of homes that we manage are required to have a keyless entry system. Which means the vacation does not have to wait in long check in lines to pick up thier keys. They go right from thier residence to their vacation home and not required to come to our office. 2nd our office address is 1550 deep creek drive McHenry MD 21541. It is displayed on our map of the area that we provide on our website. In fact our web cam is on top of my office show real time pictures of the lake and ski resort. I just got approved from the post office to put a post box outside my office so Iw ill be changing the address on the website very soon.

I hope you reconsider allowing me to put my website up on wikitravel but I will not add it untill you approve. The keyless entry is for the vacation renter to make it easier for them. I will continue to add information to the site and if you like Peter I have some associates that live in Annapolis that give me pictures of landmarks for you.

I'm not going to lie: I actually do appreciate seeing the result listings, but I completely understand the lack of participation being rather unmotivating for you to bother taking the time to evaluate the results. A lot of work has been done on the Kyoto collaboration (despite the "task" area still having most tasks undone), but the "collaboration" part of it is rather weak, which surprises me. Most contributions have been made by me. I was thinking the lack of contibutors (especially anonymous) may be do to the fact that most people are out doing things in the summer and on the computer in the winter (with all their summer experiences to write about). I'll be sure to tabulate the Kyoto results, since that one actually has had activity. In any rate, if you want to do the Copenhagen stats, just go to each article in the bundle (main & districts) and go to the history to compare the first with the last edit before the cotm, and then the last edit of the cotm month (like this [10]). The revision number +1 is the total edits (in this case, 29). Web Cams

Peter, I changed the rates for the blurp on my company. May I add a section to Deep Creek Lake for web cams(do not know if there is policy forbidding them). There are alot of very nice web cams in Deep Creek lake. I do think having a webcam section of the area is very valuable especially if you have never been to Deep Creek Lake. I also would like to add some pictures of the area. I am not to sure how to add the pictures but I am going to research this in your help pages.

about Anacostia

Hi Peter,

I edited this article last night because so much of the information is incorrect or outdated. First and foremost, Anacostia is NOT the huge swath of neighborhoods east of the river -- it is only One neighborhood.

As such, it certainly not the most impoverished and dangerous. I am the first to admit that Anacostia is not perfect, but this is clearly written from the perspective that Anacostia is to be feared and is a novelty based on the fact that it is so jarringly different from the rest of the city.

While there might be neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River like that, the neighborhood of Anacostia is not that place. Can we work together to write a guide that is fair to the neighborhood and still interesting to read?

Relax. Since when is the word "ridiculous" considered abusive? I've got abusive language in my vocabulary but I'm not going to use it on this site. Not liking something doesn't make it wrong.

RE: LGBT travel. It may have been my fault that you misunderstood what I was trying to say; I wasn't clear enough. I suggested that morality police patrol this website (members not admins). After seeing that LGBT travel was, at one time, up for deletion. I had flashbacks of that time when people were pulling the morality card. I thought that the morality card had been pulled on BDSM travel because.... people think that what they don't like is simply not right for existing.

It was up for deletion by a troll abusing the vfd process for the sole purpose of bothering people. If I understand correctly, regular users decided to allow the process to run in order to have a solid consensus established on the talk page that we could refer to, in case anyone else tried to be obnoxious and re-vfd it.

Deleting travel topics that are uncurated and have no useful contact is standard and established practice here. There are some proposals in the works to alter that practice, but we haven't yet adopted them.

If you would like to take a shot at recreating the BDSM article, I would encourage you to do so. Just make sure not to violate the Wikitravel:Sex tourism policy—directing travelers to major (and long-term established) clubs in cities with a big scene would be fine, while directing travelers to services would not. (I tend to think that policy is a little over-inclusive, but a lot of sex tourism is exploitative, and it's a useful way of weeding that stuff out.) I certainly can't guarantee that a recreated article won't come back up in a deletion nomination, but if you do a really good job with it and avoid any policy violations, my hunch is you'll find sympathetic ears.

Regarding the comment that I removed, adding votes to the vfd page without any deletion rationale per existing policy or practice is frowned upon; I'd usually ignore that, but your comment contained no argument beyond casually belittling someone else's opinion. --Peter ^Talk 21:25, 29 July 2009 (EDT)

Thanks Peter for the welcome and information about the 9 cities rule that I had not spotted.

I found Wikitravel a few weeks ago and decided to make use of my wiki editing experience gained on Wikipedia. I have been checking out the places I have visited in the past to add any details that I can. I live in London and most of my family holidays in recent years have been in Northern France, so I have been adding most of my information to this area, where there was not much detail for several places. I have also sorted out the Region/Department/Cities clasification for many cites where it was inconsistant.

In some spare time recently, I have tried to fix some obvious problems with orphaned articles where the IsPartOf section or an appropriate link needed adding. I have not added links to orphaned articles for small towns which consist of only none or two lines of information or where the town appears too small compared to the other cites in the article where the link would obviously go. (Or would break the 9 cities rule).

Thanks for fixing Athens/Kifissia earlier today. I think a went a bit to far on my first attempt. It seems OK now.

Broken IsPartOf

Hello Peter, hope you can help me, I was trying to clear up some of the broken or orphaned pages in regards to isPartOf and I'd like to have a play with the api in order to help automate the task a bit, so I visited http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php and got absolutely nowhere since none of the examples seem to work, I just get empty data. They do however work on the mediawiki version here http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=info&titles=Main%20Page someone has mentioned this on the Travellers Pub page earlier this year but got no response, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I'm doing wrong, do I need to login first? Tried that with the supplied url and got an error back. Anyway I was hoping either you might know what I'm doing wrong or could point me towards someone who could help.

Apartments Listings

Hi Peter,

I have a question regarding Apartment listings in the Sleep section for various cities in Europe, and have been told in the past that you're the best person to ask...

I work for a company that is both an agent and an 'owner' of apartments in many European cities (we have a long term leases on at least 2 apartments in the following cities: London, Manchester, Newcastle, Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Dublin, Berlin, Edinburgh & Glasgow - which effectively makes us the primary source for these apartments, not agents).

I have checked through the guidelines regarding apartment listings and we do have a physical office in the UK where we are based (with over 20 customer service reps who can be contacted by phone - not trying to 'brag' here, just emphasise that we are a physical company and not 'just another affiliate agency'). We also have a reception for each of our apartments where any complaints / suggestions can be dealt with and the keys picked up - these are within the apartments blocks, in the city specified, and can be contacted by phone directly once a booking has been made.

So, my question would be: am I allowed to post our link in those city's Sleep sections? I wouldn't go posting links in loads of related articles, just the Sleep sections. I believe I qualify to post, although I guess that depends on your taken on the meaning of the word 'office' in each location - as I say, we have a reception that handles paperwork, keys, and customers - so I would class that as an office - although I am a bit biased ;-)

Phone numbers & policy..

Hi Peter - just continuing the discussion from Talk:Baltimore - which now isn't about Baltimore..

I don't really have that strong a position on how phone numbers should be written (although I see the sense in making it apparent what needs to be dialled locally). I do disagree with what I see as advocating a different policy on the basis of a "long standing practice" on an article talk page. Everybody should be free to ignore it, criticise it, disagree with it, but I don't feel that anyone should advocate against others following the policy on talk pages unless they are prepared to state their case on the the policy page. --inas 03:00, 20 August 2009 (EDT)

The policy you are referring to is an interpretation you just came up with, which noone has ever followed. In star nominations, we have required people to format U.S. phone numbers as +1 XXX XXX-XXXX. The interpretation everyone has always followed is that the area code is separate from the local number. In U.S. phone numbers, the first three digits following the country code are the area code, not the local number.

The more important thing to take away is that if you find some dusty old policy, and interpret it to mean something other than what everyone has been doing here, then you need to start a discussion to change the status quo practice. In this case, I wouldn't support your proposal for two reasons: 1) reformatting all the U.S. articles would be a waste of time, & 2) I think all articles in one country should follow the same publishing standards—having more than one phone number format in a "Wikitravel Guide to the U.S." would look unprofessional. --Peter ^Talk 15:55, 20 August 2009 (EDT)

Peter F.'s on vacation. Good find, though, Peter S. That listing was added in April 2007 by User:Angelaphoenixpartnership. I see Evan created Talk:Cape Town/City Harvest Festival at the same time, to preserve information that she added to a project page (see Talk:Cape Town#Lost festival). A Google search indicates this person has been spamming the same description in several places on the web, although the original source is probably [19]. If the festival is still going on as an annual event (I think it was new in 2007), the entry can probably stay, but the description needs to be deleted as a possible violation of copyright (it's possible Angela is/was an official with the event but we can't know for sure). SEO and talk pages

Unfortunately, Wikitravel is configured such that search engines do index talk pages (Exhibit A: [20]) -- only the history pages are excluded. This is in sharp contrast to Wikipedia, which does not allow any talk spaces to be indexed except Wikipedia_talk.

I personally think this is a significant bug, but despite rumors and ancient legends, there doesn't actually seem to be a tech team to report it to. - Dguillaime 13:57, 11 September 2009 (EDT)

cycles and segways

Well, I saw these strange two-wheeled contraptions before I knew they were called Segways and was trying to find out about them to put some info on the Rome page when lo and behold someone does it. Also, I see quite a few groups of cyclists going up and down the Appian Way so I suppose the companies are legit. Don't we need to encourage "green" tourism?

I am sorry I seem to be a trouble maker but I realy mean no harm. The bed and breakfast is a charity run service offering quite affordable en-suite rooms in East Yorkshire and the estate is worth visiting. We keep 42 acres of gardens well maintained and do not charge - we run entirely with volunteers and donations. With your agreement maybe the bed and breakfast could be added to at least the East Yorkshire page?

More on tours

Hello Peter,

I'm one of the former contributors to wikitravel. Unfortunately you deleted our tours, explaining that walking tours can not be put on the Wikitravel and besides it our tours have no value added items like helicopters or segways or bikes. So briefly our tours do not meet the requirements!! (no matter we have thematical tours such as the Jewish Heritage and the Communist walking tour. The later is the only Communist city walk in Budapest which ends at a typical Communist building where travelers can see the relics of our childhood (e.g. passports, pioneer membership book, board games, etc- which are definitely not kitches as one of the administrator was accusing us.)

Please check the PRAGUE or BARCELONA or any other city's TO DO paragraph and kindly ask you to explain why the Free Prague general walking tour or the CITYWALKS in Prague is different from our tours concerning the value they add.. I assume you read through my arguments at the Traveller's Pub page..

Have you read Orwells book the Animal Farm.. everybody is equal but some are more equal than others!! LONDON has 5 walking tours listed. General walks nothing special.I could return the question LtPowers:What exactly is the value added by going on this tour versus going by oneself and taking along a good travel guide?" Prague still has at least 3 general walking tours and another 3 pub crawls.. Again, what is the value added going on these tours versus going by oneself? You can't clink glasses on your own..?? There are at least 5 walking tours in Paris! What makes the Classical Walks of Paris different from our Free Communist Walking Tour? Or the Newparis Walking Tour by Mr. Sandman? Or the New Berlin Walking Tour Or what about the Alternative Berlin or the Insider Berlin Tour??

I am absolutely sure about a storm of indignation if you want to delete the above tours too. And if not.. than I am thinking about publishing this story to many travel sites I usually write articles about Budapest.

Hi Peter,

I've just seen that you have removed our addition to the 'Sleep' area of Edinburgh. We spoke some time ago about adding ourselves in the correct sections of Wikipedia - I must admit that at the time I hadn't read the rules for posting and did break them - I added ourselves in every city where we advertise apartments.

However, since then I have spoken to several of your 'colleagues' and thought I had cleared up this issue. Please see http://wikitravel.org/en/User_talk:Dguillaime - and scroll down to 'Message for DGuillame'.

I am now being careful to only add in cities where we actually own / long term lease the apartments, so are the original supplier, and only in cities where we have an area within the apartment block for the user to pick up keys / complete paperwork etc. I also listed the cities where we are owners and have an office location. I am not listing in cities where we are only agents and not original providers.

I also stayed clear of adding listings to lots of different articles, only to the relevant sleep sections.

I also spoke to another of your colleagues (can't find it now though) who said that I should fill out my listings with actual information so they don't look spammy. I have done this, including our central office telephone number / email address, the address if the apartment building where we have the office (which is also shown on our website), and some other info such as prices.

Please can you advise?

WTP trick

I can't believe this never occurred to me as a way to get pictures where I want 'em in the printed guide. Is there a place that little tips and tricks like this for WTP editors can go? LtPowers 09:04, 13 October 2009 (EDT)

Not yet—aside from the WTP markup guide [21] all we have are the examples in guides like Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, etc. I'd be happy if there was one, though, since I'm also still having trouble controlling image placement when using the inline & float options. --Peter ^Talk 09:30, 13 October 2009 (EDT)

As a rule of thumb, I do not recommend attempting to finetune the locations of pictures, since wiki text is inherently fluid and LaTeX provides absolutely no guarantees about what goes where, so they probably won't be in the same place in the next edition. The print=inline tag is best reserved for small maps that have to go next to their text, and the <!--PRINT tag should be avoided entirely.

The mailing list is a good idea but it'd be nice to have an archive somewhere for reference. =) I'm not sure about Peter, but I would only use that trick to make sure my print=float images were paired up. I've got a print=split map late in the Epcot guide that was forcing two floated images to print on separate pages (one before the map and one after). Hey Peter, while I can struggle through most Cyrillic after a 1½ months in Russia, and most other can probably guess from context, the Киломе́тр label looks a bit silly on a Latin map. Yeah, considering the history of Svalbard, it's quite surprising we haven't had any Norwegians loudly complaining about that. Anyway, If you have the inclination, Longyearbyen up north has a dot, but no label. And down south, the Telemark should either be a blue dot left of the T, or renamed Larvik or Sandefjord to fit with the city dot below. I am looking at starting on the six Bali sub-region maps. I have looked a round a bit but I am struggling to find a reference as to what these should include, the formatting etc. I suspect there are not too many Wikitravelised sub-region level maps yet. Any guidance you might have on the following would be appreciated and will almost certainly save time :) :

• Roads. Should presumably follow the red and yellow format as on first level region maps? White roads to be avoided on sub-region maps?
• Attractions. Should major attractions in the sub-region be shown on the map? And if so, in which format? Is an icon and key box required or should the attraction be shown as a blue square with a place name?

Ah, sorry about that! To merge a page, I generally add a merge template ({{merge|targetpage}}) at the top of the page you propose we do away with, and then leave a note stating why on the article's talk page. If others agree, or if noone responds for a little while, then just go ahead and copypaste the relevant text, then redirect the page to the target. If the target page doesn't exist yet, then it's not really a merge, it's a move. Well, Tongatapu is somewhat smaller than Chicago. There are a couple of things to see on the island that are not in Nuku'alofa and a couple of places to stay that are not in Nuku'alofa but, basically, Nuku'alofa is Tongatapu. Nusa Lembongan semi protection did not work

Hi Peter, today was a minor edit war action at NL with a persistant business owner who did not respond on my message. I tried a block for unregistered users but he was still able to edit anonymously. Still no idea. When I instated the protection, it did appear to work—the spammer made no edits, and I also could not edit it when logged out. But if the problem persists, I'd recommend sticking to reverts and, if necessary, temp blocks. A short block of a half hour–two hours, with a block message of "Please see [[special:mytalk|your talk page]]" can be extremely effective in engaging a troublesome user. An assessment of Bali please :)

I would be very grateful Peter if you could give me a quick assessment of where Bali stands in respect of the long term aim of achieving star region status. In particular could you please have a look at the 6 regional articles, as you have previously identified that getting all of these to guide is where the larger aim is most likely to come unstuck. Five of the six regions now have Wikitravelised maps which has to be good :). I have already pushed Central Bali up to guide as I think it is sufficiently developed and all three city articles beneath it are already guides. In your eyes, is that regional article the standard we should be aiming at? I do appreciate that there is lots more to be done to achieve star region status (not least on the main article itself) but I want to compartmentalise the tasks and the 6 regional articles are critical. I have just completed my first really Urban Map and I cannot tell you how much I admire you guys who have been churning these out for so long. That was so much work and very fiddly! rome districts

Peter, you missed by query on the Rome/Talk page. Defining districts I decided to move further afield than my home of Rome/South but now run into problems in the north. I wanted to do something on Rome's mosque (Viale della Moschea). Looking at the map at Rome this is definitely in Rome/North Center but the text states that Villa Torlonia is in Rome/North when it is actually much closer to the center than is the mosque. As there isn't much in Rome/North I would recommend cutting Rome/North Center into two and moving a large chunk into Rome/North.Shep 12:40, 11 November 2009 (EST)

Sakhalin

So I gave Alexandrovsk my best shot, I'm incredibly proud at the fact that I actually found the prices for the hotel! but other than that It's all looking a bit yellow pages'ly. With the gargantuan effort undertaken to even come up with basic listings for Okha and Alexandrovsk, coupled with the fact that they are barely mentioned in LP, gives me a rather clear conciousness, this is definitely one of best guides to Sakhalin out there, but I'm not sure how the others will feel judging from the harsh reactions to current nominations. Anyway some remaining issues:

• Nogliki - I really have doubts on that one, as the end point of the railway, one of the 3 airports, and the home of the Nivkh cultural centre (the only thing I've basically found on this is the name) and a hotel - I'm not sure it can really be left out - on the other hand it's probably even harder to make a decent guide for this one than the other two cities. Maybe if we're two doing the effort, with one sort of speaking Russian it can be done? or do you think it's ok to leave it out?

• Chekhov, cheers, I was rather dreading writing up on that one! :)

• Are you able to translate the Russian quote in the Alexandrovsk church entry? --Stefan (sertmann) ^talk 19:01, 13 November 2009 (EST)

Wow, I simply have no idea how you pulled that one [30] off! Your start on Nogliki already looks really good to me, so I definitely think it worth including—it only has to be at usable status for the main article to reach guide status. I sure wish we could create maps for these tiny towns, but the source material just isn't there... And any translations are a cinch—I translate Russian → English at the professional level. Ah, are you adding Template:Regionlist? The way I would find out the color code is to download Inkscape [31], open it, import or copy-paste the map into it, then use the eye-dropper tool. Just hover the eye-dropper over the color in question, and then the color code will appear at the bottom of the screen. If that answer didn't help—I'll make sure to get to helping out with the new Brooklyn regions. (I would have already, if it weren't for the DoS attack.) --Peter ^Talk 10:42, 19 November 2009 (EST)

Peter's advice (or similar) should work in most picture editing apps if you do not want to download Inkscape. Eg in Photoshop, open the png, select the colour that you want to identify with the eye dropper and then click the foreground icon and you will get the hex# for that colour. --Burmesedays 10:47, 19 November 2009 (EST)

Undo changes to Ann Arbor--you're a lifesaver

OMG! Thanks for letting me know! I can't believe what I did to the Ann Arbor article...yes, please revert those changes if possible, as I am now aware price range for restaurants is OK and no periods should be used for abbreviations of street types. I feel like a moron...and have done this in error to sooo many article pages! Oh dear!
