== [[Penza Oblast]] ==
"Penzenskaya Oblast" ''looks'' like an alternative name - how about incorporating it as '''''Penza Oblast''' (Penzenskaya Oblast) is a region in...'' or something like that? Then if someone searches for either "Penzenskaya" or "Penzenskaya Oblast" (which I'd guess must be possible/likely as that's the name of the Wikipedia article) the [[Penza Oblast]] article will show up. ~ [[User:|]] 01:40, 11 January 2008 (EST)
:Doesn't the redirect serve this purpose? I purposely avoided transliterations of adjectival names, since that goes against general English naming conventions.  --[[User:Peterfitzgerald|Peter]] <small>[[User_talk:Peterfitzgerald|Talk]]</small> 02:09, 11 January 2008 (EST)
:: The redirect does help, albeit in a rather roundabout way if you "Search" as opposed to "Go". Anyway, I think it's definitely worth having some form of ultra-simple confirmation on the page that the two names do refer to the exact same place - lots of people will have absolutely no idea what an adjectival form is. But I'll leave it up to you - thanks for the explanations. ~ [[User:|]] 02:27, 11 January 2008 (EST)

==Travel guides in Russian==
Dear Peter, I have wrote many articles or made a significant contibution)in Russian Wikipedia (Budapest, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence). Now I started to write articles in Russian Wikitravel. To my opinion, its level is too low. I can contribue due to my experience.
The countries I visited are: Switzerland, UK, France, Spain, Czechia, Hungary, US, Italy. I can write also in English or Hebrew. See my Wikipedia page at [Участник:Aklyuch]--[[User:Aklyuch|Aklyuch]] 22:44, 14 January 2008 (EST)
Hi - I made a few edits to the entry for Morogoro, Tanzania, but they don't seem to show up.  I looked at the history of the page and saw your userid.  It looks like you're an experienced user of this site (I am not) so I thought I'd ask - did I do something wrong in trying to save the edits ?  Do I just need to wait for someone to approve them ?  I have many more edits for Morogoro, but I thought I'd wait until the first batch go through.  Could you please reply at [deleted] ?  Thanks.  - Albert
Peter - Thanks for explaining.  I'll continue to update the Morogoro site.  My plan is to move everything from the REDOUBT site to WikiTravel - no sense in hoarding the data when there's a great site like this.  Thanks.  - Albert
Hi Peter -  Living in Morogoro, it's quite useful to have the cell numbers of a few local taxis handy.  I think this would quite legitimately be useful information for travelers.  However, it seems quite strange to put someone's primary phone number on a public web page.  Also, I was thinking that because there are literally hundreds of taxis in the area, it could get to be quite ungainly to list them on the main page.  That led me to wondering if there is a precedent for this situation, and I figured that you might know.  Thanks, - [[User:Alingelb|Albert]]
== traveler vs traveller ==
I thought "traveller" was already well established as the default for Wikitravel - see Main page, etc. ~ [[User:|]] 22:49, 18 January 2008 (EST)
:Yeah, we've been schizophrenic on that because Evan for whatever reason grew up using the English spelling. Like I said, it's not something I care too much about&mdash;I'd rather see a policy that encourages spellings local to the destination, so I'm not a big supporter of the American-only rule.  --[[User:Peterfitzgerald|Peter]] <small>[[User_talk:Peterfitzgerald|Talk]]</small> 22:52, 18 January 2008 (EST)
:: OK to continue standardising on "travell..." then? ~ [[User:|]] 22:56, 18 January 2008 (EST)
::: standardizing :=) --[[User:Wandering|Wandering]] 23:18, 18 January 2008 (EST)
:::: No chance - if it's from one non-supporter of the American-only rule to another non-supporter of the American-only rule, then it's definitely with an s. ~ [[User:|]] 23:23, 18 January 2008 (EST)
:::::Well, again this is just my view and it's not a policy, but for me the most important thing is the consistency within a single locale. What exactly constitutes a single locale is up for debate, of course&mdash;I would argue that any collection of articles that would conceivably wind up in a single book (were such a book to be written) should have a purely consistent spelling/punctuation format. So I would definitely oppose "traveller" changes to Chicago, for example, because there is a published guide that needs to maintain consistency in (American) spelling. All this is not really in line with policy, though. It might be useful to bring this discussion to [[Wikitravel talk:Spelling]], which is a policy I think could anyway benefit from more discussion and review.  --[[User:Peterfitzgerald|Peter]] <small>[[User_talk:Peterfitzgerald|Talk]]</small> 00:19, 19 January 2008 (EST)
== Sleep section header in region articles ==
Hi, Peter. I noticed that you "restored" a Sleep header to the [[Arizona]] article. I believe it is [[Wikitravel:Region article template|policy]] that region articles do not have a Sleep section. In my experience that is good policy as everyone wants their listing in the highest geographical level for better exposure, but leaves us sorting huge lists to lower levels where they belong. -- [[User:OldPine|OldPine]] 07:43, 19 January 2008 (EST)

== New user question ==
I am trying to add information about Norskedalen (where I work) to Wikitravel.  Being new to this, I did create a user ID to disclose that the information comes from our non-profit rather than a traveler.  I added to the 'See' section of Southwest Wisconsin (which is where I saw your name).  I am not sure I did it right; the 'See' changed fonts and I didn't touch that, it has a 'link example' in blue at the end of the paragraph, and I wasn't sure if I should create a separate page for Norskedalen? I was just hoping you might give me a bit of guidance if you would be so kind. Thanks  {{unsigned|Svennorsk}}

Put Rock Cafe above LSL Bakery.  It's at the T-intersection (yes, it's still the same rocks as at The Baths).
Put Island Pot across Tower Road from LSL Bakery.
Mine Shaft Restaurant is a little inland from the coppermine, on the north side of the road:
Put Flying Iguana on the lower left cornr of the Airport icon. It's on the south side of the airport road.

== Credit for articles? ==
I just made a boo-boo.  I made several contributions to articles on Kaliningrad and Murmansk, only to discover that, when my dial-up connection dropped out midway, I was no longer logged in to Wikitravel when I continued, meaning that my contributions were attributed to "Anonymous."  Considering that I brought these articles from almost zero info to having at least basic info populated in most of the fields, I'd rather have some credit rather than Anonymous.  In the Murmansk article, I "undid" everything then resubmitted the info after logging on.  Not sure if that's the kosher way to do it -- one could steal another's work that way, but I was only repopulating my own.  Should I do the same for today's edits to Kaliningrad, or is there another, better fix? -Andrewsyria
:Hey Andrew, if you'd like a "cleaner" way of doing it, I could delete the article, then restore it to the point just before you started editing it. Then you could copy/paste in the current version and get credit for it that way.  You'd have to hold on to the copied version in the meantime, on notepad or a [[User:Andrewsyria/Sandbox]] page. Let me know if you'd like to do that and I'll be happy to oblige. Two other things:  you can auto-sign & date-stamp your comments by typing four tildes <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>; and thanks for all the awesome work you've been doing!  --[[User:Peterfitzgerald|Peter]] <small>[[User_talk:Peterfitzgerald|Talk]]</small> 01:03, 8 July 2008 (EDT)

Sorry to keep hassling you about the Chicago district maps, just thought I should point out a few more errors:
Near South: The See/Do key is messed up. Numbers 3 and 4 are missing, replaced by numbers 12 (Charter One Pavilion) and 10 (Dearborn Station). Charter One appears as number 4 on the map, and Dearborn Station appears as number 3; these should be switched.
Lakeview: Distance key is off; it's labeled as 0.25 when it's actually 0.5. Belmont red/brown/purple line station appears to be missing.
Near North: Distance key is off; it's labeled 0.5 when it's actually 0.25. The Mag Mile inset might be off, but I can't tell for sure.
Far Southeast Side: The main map is fine, but on the Pullman inset, the Kensington/115th Metra station is mislabeled as "Kensington/111th".
Uptown: Argyle red line stop isn't labeled (not sure if there is space for this or not), and the Berwyn red line stop is missing. The Bryn Mawr red line stop is missing and could fit on the map, but it falls completely outside the district boundaries by several blocks so it probably isn't that important.
North Lincoln: The main map is fine, but on the Lincoln Square inset, the distance key is labeled as 125 kilometers (!!!); I'm assuming this was supposed to be 125 meters.
That's all I have for now. I'd fix these myself if that were possible/if I knew how. [[User:Eco84|Eco84]] 17:51, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

I hope they're ok, but I don't have many good ways to contact them. From a travel perspective, it's also a disaster for this little country, and for me, since I spent so much effort working on the [[Gori]] article, which may or may not have been made very outdated by the bombings & assaults.
:It's also depressing to see these countries at each other's throats, when they for so long have had such a great relationship (and depressing since I'm both a Russophile and Kartvelophile...). I think that Gorbachev's arguments fly in the face of international norms of behavior, but not to the extent that the American invasion of [[Iraq]] did, so it's awful hard for our government to challenge Russia's invasion even diplomatically. I must add, though, that the popular Russian arguments for the military reprisal seem really hypocritical in light of their campaign to control and keep within the federation [[Chechnya]]&mdash;a campaign which I thought very much justified.  --[[User:Peterfitzgerald|Peter]] <small>[[User_talk:Peterfitzgerald|Talk]]</small> 17:12, 20 August 2008 (EDT)
== Hi from Crowsnest ==
Hi Peter, Thanks for the complement. I really spun-off here as I wanted to get something down in text form. My real passion is for OpenStreetMap and I am having fun mapping out the Crowsnest Pass via GPS, see
There is a group who have just release a history-route map of places in the Pass. There is no copyright statement so I'm trying to get in touch with the author so see if he/she will license the text under CC. Would be nice to import this into the pages for the separate towns.
Is it legit to take other people's CC work and relicense under CC-SA? Or do you have to exactly match terms?
:Yes, if it is licensed as CC-Attribution, you are within your rights to relicense it as CC-Attribution-ShareAlike, since the absence of the ShareAlike clause means you can distribute it under ''any'' licensing, as long as you maintain attribution. I've tried fooling around with OpenStreetMap too, but am endlessly frustrated by the fact that I can't use street names taken from non-free content maps!  --[[User:Peterfitzgerald|Peter]] <small>[[User_talk:Peterfitzgerald|Talk]]</small> 16:05, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

:::The street names are not copyrighted, but the maps from which you might get names are. Hi Peter, I have made all the last minute adjs as per star nom page.  I tried to readjust the color areas per 'Loin neighborhoods but wasn't able to snap them neatly to the street grid.  I wonder can I ask you to tweak it please?
* '''Little Saigon''' should be stretched (not moved) one block south to Turk
* '''Tandoor-Loin''' should be stretched (not moved) one block west to Leavenworth St
*  The '''Polk Gulch''' is a bit off.  It's everything north of Geary St  between Polk and Hyde should run right to the end of the map as it technically goes into the next neighborhood.
* The '''Tendernob''' is Geary to Sutter between Larkin and Mason.

== St Pete status ==
Thanks for your thoughts on the St Pete article.  I'm trying to develop it as fast as I can, but if others beat me to it, all the better.  As for restaurants, yes, there are a million, but I suspect there will have been significant turnover since 2003.  Any Uzbek restaurants you can add would be great - there are too few now, and the one closest to me has been boarded up for about a year now.  Would be glad to collaborate somehow on looking into your old favorites.--[[User:Andrewsyria|Andrewsyria]] 02:12, 25 August 2008 (EDT)

== Chicagoland ==
I just added a couple sentences to the [[Chicagoland]] article to emphasize the ties to [[Southeast Wisconsin]] and [[Northern Indiana]].  If you do an article on [[Lake County (Indiana)]], then we could specify that that and [[Kenosha]] are often included in Chicagoland--either at the beginning, the end or both.
I guess what I'm trying to avoid is having a summary of Lake County that appears both in Northern Indiana and in Chicagoland--likewise with Kenosha and SE Wisconsin.  It just seems like bad organization to me--as the sections evolve in the natural wiki way, they either have to be kept manually in synch or else they'll diverge in ways that are not helpful to the user of the site (e.g., having to look two places to get all the useful info--or mistakes being corrected in one place but not the other).  Keeping them separate and cross-referenced would be my preference--which I guess I've made clear; my apologies if I'm belaboring the point.
Anyway, since you and I seem to be the only ones currently paying attention to the Chicagoland page, I'm wondering what you think of the changes I've made to it--I'm a newcomer to Wikitravel and I'm trying to bring the page more in line with the ideal form of a regional article, but I'm not precisely clear what that is.  Am I doing the right thing with the attractions, for instance?  And was getting rid of the hotels en masse the right thing to do?  If those all didn't seem like they had been put there by PR agents, I might have been more circumspect.

== Colorado regions ==
That's an excellent draft map, and it does a good job of pointing out some of the challenges of making Colorado regions.  In a "flatter" state, use of latitude and longitude, or at most reliance on highways, usually provides adequate guidance in setting up regions.  When regions are defined by mountain ranges (and, usually, the borders of those regions by the resulting valleys), however, things meander, and highly non-intuitive "regions" result if one aims for consistency in transportation routes, regional attractions, and so on.  Actually, Arizona is even more of a pain in this regard than Colorado is...
It's probably most practical to consider the "black" region part of [[Northwestern Colorado]], although perfectly sensible arguments can be made either way.  One reason is that the northwest region otherwise gets rather short shrift in terms of destinations and attractions; may as well give it [[Aspen]], [[Glenwood Springs]] and [[Grand Junction]] to beef up the content somewhat, although Aspen "feels" more like part of the southwest or [[South Central Colorado]] regions in many regards.  For destinations along the border, there are always hard choices -- and one of the things about a mountain state is that the destinations ''will'' be along the borders, because valleys bearing the roads, rivers and other things that define the borders are exactly where the cities are built.  One challenge is to come up with a simple, tidy description of the resulting western regions, but it looks like you've made headway on that, at least graphically.
To me the distinction between the Denver region and others is less of a problem.  One simple criterion works: if it's urban, it's part of the Denver region; if it's rural, put it in one of the others.  Your draft does quite a good job with that, although my wife's brother's house probably gets bisected by the western edge of the Denver region ... -- [[User:Bill-on-the-Hill|Bill-on-the-Hill]] 21:20, 27 August 2008 (EDT)

Dear Mr. Peter,
I understand that you are very passionate about travel. And that you are making great effort to maintain many of the travel pages in this wiki. On the contrary. I would request not to edit/truncate any text without validating that it is right or wrong.
I thought that these pages are for public, to contribute, enrich with information. I have noticed that you have reverted some edits in the past few days several times where as the information added was absolutely correct, valid and more than real.
I also noticed that you are from US. In case you think that this message also needs to be validated, you can contact me ([email protected]) for further information on the place. I am going to this place since 2003.
Have a great day
Thank you,
::We don't allow [[tout]]ing on our pages, and we don't want our hotel descriptions to read like a brochure. Adding things like "best rooms in Mandarmoni" are not helping our project. We also don't describe ''every'' detail of a hotel, just the basics. I kept some of the recent things you added to your hotel, like the price range, which is good to have. We appreciate your understanding what I'm trying to say here, none of us want to continue to have to fight over this and constantly revert each others changes &ndash; [[User:Cacahuate|<font color="green">cacahuate</font>]]  <small>[[User talk:Cacahuate|<font color="blue">talk</font>]]</small> 15:37, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
::: Thank you for your understanding, "Cacahuate". On the same note I believe using the word "touting" is very strong in this case. If you pay a bit attention then, you would notice that, every body should be given equal space to express in a certain way. In this case, the truth is truth. How much one try to negate, it still remains the same. If I understand English, I would say, some of the text still reads like "brochure". The words like "contemporary", "eco-friendly" equally affirms the uniqueness and strides to strike a difference. Anyway! I still appreciate the effort from the bottom of my heart. Hope this would end the "constant revert" fight. BTW,one quick information, Project Digante is much bigger than the resort that the group of people have built, they are deeply engaged in other social activities in the area for last 4 years, it's a dream project for them, not a mere business to scalp money, Thank you again. Hope this information helps.
::::Everything is expressed in the ''same'' way here, from the point of view of a traveler, not from the hotel owner's point of view, that's all. There's a large difference between describing a place as contemporary or eco-friendly (which a lot of travelers care about and want to know) and hotel owner calling their place "the best" &ndash; [[User:Cacahuate|<font color="green">cacahuate</font>]]  <small>[[User talk:Cacahuate|<font color="blue">talk</font>]]</small> 21:25, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
:::: I disagree that everything is expressed in the "same" way. Have you visited Digante? If not then go visit and the question yourself. You are editing something and truncating it to no meaning without knowing about the place. It is best that the traveler be informed, not under informed. If you have a problem with "the best" you can edit that but please be sensitive about cutting out the entire text. Yes!!!! Bengali traveler care about fresh FISH caught straight from the pond and served. And may I ask you the question: How do you know I am the Hotel owner !!!!!!!!! I felt as a traveler who stayed in most of the hotels at M'moni, that Digante has the best rooms (decor, facility and design). That's all. Now it's up to you whether you will continue to target the text. Thank you.
:::: BTW, I have edited your disliking, using the word "the best"...thank you.

::::::Your edits make you sound like you work for the hotel, that's all... unfortunately several hotel owners/workers in Mandarmoni ''and'' a couple of travel agencies have all been frequent visitors to our site and created a little war on the Mandarmoni page, so you'll find that it's a little more difficult than normal to get flowery writing onto that page.
