Passes

Hi - I'm not entirely sure that a mountain pass meets the criteria for Wikitravel:What is an article?. If there is a town at the pass then we're all good, or if the pass can be considered a region then it would be a valid topic, otherwise the information should be included in the containing region article. If the pass is a valid town/region, please use the Wikitravel:Small city article template or the Wikitravel:Region article template.

I'm not sure either, but there was already a link to Bolan Pass in the Quetta article. There is a town or two in it, but I don't know their names. It doesn't really fit in any containing region since it is between Af and Pakistan. I suppose it might be considered a region on its own, but that is odd. Easiest to just mention it, without a link, in both Kandahar & Quetta articles, I think. I've done that and proposed it for deletion.

Other similar things I've edited are Khyber Pass and Karakoram Highway. They are major routes and have towns, so I don't see a problem there. Do you? Pashley 08:11, 13 April 2006 (EDT)

If it's a major route with towns that doesn't really fit into any other region then it seems like a good candidate for a region article, or possibly an itinerary article. That decision is (obviously) up to you since you know the area, so just use whichever template fits. If no template fits then we probably need to figure out where else the information could go. What's the right way to do that, though? I've been copying the "this is a Wikitravel ..." line, but Money uses an isIn Travel topics tag and I wonder if there's a susbt or other simple tag that puts in the right consistent text

Hey Pashley, that's very helpful. Thanks. However, I'm wondering whether Canton should direct to Guangzhou, rather than Guangdong. It is true that 'Cantonese' refers to the language, people and cuisine of Guangdong province, but until very recently the city of Guangzhou was referred to as Canton in the West - there was no other name - whereas the province was already known as Guangdong overseas. The airport code for Guangzhou (CAN) reflects this. Anyway, I'm just throwing out some ideas here. I'll leave it to you to make the decision. WindHorse 23 April 06 Ps. Personally, I like the old names: Bombay, Madras, Simla, Jogjakarta, Calcutta, Burma, ... They're what I know and what I consider standard in English. If it were up to me, the pages would all use those names with redirects from the new ones. However, I don't think that matches policy. Using the new names is OK with me too, as long as there's a redirect.

I have a question regarding Canton. There are many numerous places in the US that share the name Canton with the Chinese Guangzhou. Would it be wise to create a disambig page at Canton with a link to Guangzhou, or would that be counter productive? I'd say that's definitely one of those where there's a main one (London, England; Canton, China; Stockholm, Sweden) and the London, Ontario or whatever go on an "other uses" page. Time zones

This is the second time you've removed the info that time zone designation "Z" comes from the old alphabetic zone labeling system (where it did stand for "zero" but was accompanied by zones A-M and N-Y). I'd never heard of it, am not sure it's important, and cannot read the link you give (I'm in China and that's a US Navy site; I wonder which gov't blocks access; most likely China but who knows) but I believe you and it certainly does no harm, so I've put it back.

I think it's more of a southern US thing. We mostly do it on spring-fed rivers on hot days. I find it hard to believe that someone has never heard of it, but I have a pretty locale-centric mindset at times. It seems pretty specific to the location to list on the topic page. Guangzhou

Hi Pashley, I would like to thank you for your great work on the Guangzhou page. I'll be travelling to Guangzhou again in December and last time I was there, I thought that the city is somewhat difficult to grasp. There are only few guidebooks that have anything about GZ and the maps are usually horrible or in Chinese.

I have been creating a vector street map, but my progress is starting to slow down, since I don't have the street names. Since you seem to have a lot of knowledge about the city, I wonder if you could take a look at the map I have created and give me some feedback? Teaching English

I think it's improved. I'm sorry I haven't been of more help - I'm wrapped up in the Chicago project and that greedily saps my every moment on Wikitravel. I think the article could use coverage of a few more important topics: visas, most importantly; I'd like to see how they are acquired, and corollary to that, which places hire from overseas (China, Japan, Korea). Also, the commerce question: is it a school or a business (e.g. teacher as salesman), which is a shock to the systems of many people who expect to be like their fifth grade teacher and are instead pimping a pink bunny rabbit for two year olds. It's tough to cover so many work situations in one article. I could foresee Teaching English in Japan covering a whole page quite easily, for example. Does that help at all? I applied the banner, which felt seriously weird since I believe quite strongly that the article should not be deleted (and for that matter, some of the things cited as examples of why it quote-unquote "should" be deleted should also have articles, IMO) -- but you're right, we should follow due process here. I see you added license upgrade to the tech requests. It's actually not an issue for the tech team—IB has already given the go ahead with the upgrade. The problem was the inability of our community to reach a consensus on the matter. China Link to Conversion Rates

Why did you undo my edit adding the link to current conversion rates? You mentioned "remove external link per policy, update text" where is that "policy". The page was the China page under Buy section. http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=China&diff=1125978&oldid=1125852

Also, you changed the date to April, but NOT 2009 ... and if you clicked my link then used the info you found at the link to update the 6.88 to 6.83 ... then is that not a little hypocritical to remove the link, but use it to find the information?

Are we not after getting information that is usable and fresh ... not just stale and old.

Lastly, I was looking to get the Currency and do a conversion of some money ... the reason I made the edit was because I was looking for that information and surmised that the next person would find it useful as well. So I took the time to add it.

This is certainly no way to get well intentioned people to add useful items to the site.

I suppose you will just delete this comment as well.

Something is odd here. I normally use Firefox on Linux; that + this site have had problems for months. I assumed it was the Great Firewall, but it does not seem to be; the site works OK with Internet Explorer on a different computer. Testing with a different browser (epiphany) on my machine, it is much better than with Firefox. Maybe one of my add-ons? I'll do some more testing and probably get it working at some point. Could be Sandy. I have had terrible problems with certain Firefox add-ons in the past. In my experience, Wikitravel works great a with a stripped down browser designed for speed. Google Chrome is the obvious one. Sometimes I cannot believe how quick Chrome is when patrolling for example. Saves a huge amount of time compared to any other browser I have used.--Burmesedays 01:14, 14 April 2010 (EDT)

I do not think it is only Firefox. Chrome on this machine is only marginally better. There are other oddities on my Internet connection, though this is the worst. I'm moving soon, though (to Shanghai) and hope that might make a difference. Pashley 11:21, 25 June 2010 (EDT)

My original user page message, now removed there: At this point (April 2010) I am mostly off the air as far as Wikitravel is concerned. For the last several months, site performance has been completely appalling for me — sometimes it does not load at all & when it does, it is extremely slow and the formatting is horrendous. I am not certain if this is the Great Firewall messing with things, or what, but the site is nearly unusable for me now.

Retiring abroad

I have been watching this one hatch with some interest. I think it is close to being more than worthy of a nomination and very well done so far. Just a couple of comments:

• One little formating issue which is sure to come under scrutiny is the use of front-links which are positively discouraged in our MoS. For example International Living should really be International Living [3]
• Instinctively I feel that the article would benefit from a medical section, the need for evacuation insurance in many less developed countries etc. For many retired folks this would be a major issue I feel. --Burmesedays 04:39, 4 June 2011 (EDT)

No, I did not think it was vandalism. I just think that since the original UNESCO list uses Kortrijk, it is better to leave that spelling in our article. Kortrijk redirects to Courtray, so anyone following the link ends up in the right place.

People paid to flood discussions

I am not sure whether or how this affects us, but something else to aware of are what is called in Chinese an "Internet water army", people paid to post favorable reviews or comments on consumer or political forums. For your admin efforts. We really are trying to keep up, and for the most part we're doing ok. If you happen to see patterns in the new spam pages being created that we can use as part of a filter rule, don't hesitate to bring it to my or IBAlex or IBcash's attention. Move problems

Previously when one moved a page, the discussion page and histories were moved (by default) at the same time.

This did not seem to happen when I just re-named American and British English to English language varieties.
