Welcome, IBcash!--IBobi talk email 17:26, 30 August 2012 (EDT)

Hello! So lucky to live in CA. Thanks for your advice. I changed my sentence about Versailles. I tried to do my best to respect the Wikitravel guidelines. Please, inform me if you think that I have a few things to improve. Best. Xavier 2wheeltours 13:12, 31 August 2012 (EDT)

Hello, IBcash! Welcome to Wikitravel.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Wikitravel:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. Pashley 21:58, 2 September 2012 (EDT)

Thank you for the warm welcome! IBcash 13:30, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

Do something, I am blocked, because you IB guys think I deserve it. Won't patrol or revert any longer, IB ruined this nice community.

Hi-- We appreciate your efforts in reverting spam. You were blocked for creating pages like Please Lets not Bee Belieberss or Directioners We anadrol vs dianabol dont Needa TT Errday. What was the purpose of creating this page? If it has been a mistake we apologize and will definitely unblock your account. IBcash 16:43, 6 September 2012 (EDT)

Ko Yao

Hello IBcash ! As a fairly new user of Wikitravel, I admit not having spent the necessary time to read policies before posting, especially looking at my recent edits on Ko Yao page, which you almost instantly deleted... After reading the "Don't tout" policies, I clearly understand why my edits have been deleted ! May I please try again, following the guidelines ? One deleted edit I do not understand though, the last line of "Get in" section: "All boat transfers to/from Koh Yao Noi, updated monthly. [6]" The link isn't valid no more, so I updated to a valid one, and as we do not update boat schedules monthly I thought changing that to "regularly" would be more accurate. Anything wrong with my initial edit ?

For info, I am the manager of Koyao Bay Pavilions and La Sala Restaurant, and as such am entitled (at least I think) and will use content from our website as my boss Georges Cortez did earlier to edit this page. Please let me know if that's ok also. Cheers ! KoyaoBP

Hi KoyaoBP! Thank you for posting here and going over the guidelines. You are more than welcome to post again following these. As for the edits that you question, that was my fault. I reverted your edit and didn't realize that some of those were valid. I will revert that again so that they are included in the article. You can copy and paste information directly from the website if you can prove that you are the copy editor of the information. Also, hotel and restaurant listings usually consist of the name, contact information, price, and a couple of sentences for the readers as to why that hotel or restaurant is good. Keep this in mind when you are writing your review so that it doesn't get reverted again for sounding too much like an advertisement or being "too flowery". We look forward to your future contributions! IBcash 11:54, 13 September 2012 (EDT)

Hi there, I am Georges... alright, I see that you have been talking together... good... as my resort disappeared from the sleeping list of Koh Yao, I did put it back. I hope we are all done now...

Steep learning curve

There's a lot to learn here, IBcash - have you worked on any other wiki's?
I noticed that you have made a few edits on Tiraspol recently. Have you been there and do you understand Russian?
It's always a good idea to give a brief hint in the edit summary box as to the reason(s) when you revert someone (especially when they are not an obvious spammer or vandal) even if they have not established an account (or chosen/forgotten to log on). That way you are less likely to discourage well-meaning contributors.
The English of Хуй моржовый may not be as polished as your own, but without an edit summary or comment on his user's talk page or on the article's discussion page it may be rather difficult for him (and others) to understand a revert which (like most of your reverts) you also marked as minor. To me, it is obvious that Хуй моржовый has a Russian nationalist stance/agenda, but this particular revert is certainly not minor (it concerns our place naming policy) and deserves some hint as to the rationale.
I realise that with fewer and fewer janitors around, the remainder of us are overworked (and underpaid - feeble grin) but we really need to try and keep to existing policies (or clarify and publicise new ones) so as to encourage the growth of new contributors.
Keep up your good work - and watch that minor edit flag! --W. Franke-mailtalk 11:43, 16 September 2012 (EDT)
Hi W. Frank, thank you for letting me know. I didn't realize I was marking anything as a minor edit. I'll keep a closer look on that from now on! And I will also make sure to leave a note when I make an edit. Thank you! IBcash 12:33, 17 September 2012 (EDT)
When you are logged on to Wikitravel as IBcash, select the My preferences option at the top of your screen, then (and after your preferences open) select the Editing tab 8 lines below the search box. After the new Editing preferences screen opens, you should uncheck the Mark all edits minor by default box and, perhaps, check the Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary box.
Despite your lack of a specific reply, I will assume that neither you nor IBobi understand Russian, German, Arabic or Chinese, so I better make plain that, if I was an admin here on Wikitravel, I would not allow a user name of "Хуй моржовый" since it is extremely offensive - even more extreme than the Russian for "Romanians suck cock" that he has added from time to time in the first sentence of our Tiraspol article.
Now I know that you two guys are very busy with the spamstorm, so would it be an idea to create some more admins to help you?
(I have edited here for more than 5 years now - although there was a long period when my rather public profile here in Scotland did not allow me to log on with my user name {which is a subset of my real life name} and I instead made frequent contributions as an IP on WT. However, I like to think that this long period of IP apprenticeship has helped me focus on the edits made rather than the editor and, now I have retired from public life, I hereby volunteer to help with janitorial duties on travel articles.)
I do think it would be a tragedy if Wikitravel became riddled with hidden obscene language as a new feature that makes WT popular as a nonsense travel guide; that would only diminish your profits and credibility with corporate advertisers.
Even more importantly, I don't wish travellers to be inconvenienced or put in danger by "funny" deliberate mis-information here on Wikitravel. --W. Franke-mailtalk 14:56, 17 September 2012 (EDT)
Thank you! I will change the settings in my preferences. I don't speak any of those languages so I hadn't realized that that is what his username says. I have also noticed the turmoil that he is creating in the Russia page. Do you have any suggestions as to how to deal with this? Your edits and patrolling have definitely been noticed and appreciated. Please contact IBobi to discuss becoming an administrator. Thank you! IBcash 15:04, 17 September 2012
I'll only volunteer once - if you need some help, I suggest you make your feelings clear to IBobi. Since email another user is currently disabled here, I can't do that. --W. Franke-mailtalk 18:41, 17 September 2012 (EDT)
  • Just communicating: i have just checked ru:wt and the Russia page. I can read little, and speak no Russian, but could see clearly, by the pictures and breadcrumbs, that the Soviet geography junk, proposed by that Хуй моржовый freak, has been fully realized in the Russian version. That guy must have taken over the whole shabang. Just thought you admins would like to know. 18:29, 17 September 2012 (EDT)
Yep, the user "Russia" on ru:wt has done to ru:Россия what Хуй моржовый has tried to do on the English version. Using Google Translate, here is the 8 June version, compared with the current version. This user has also made changes to: Odessa, Ukraine, Moldova, & Belarus to imply that they are part of Russia. Again, using Google Translate:
The beginning of Ukraine: "Ukraine - a historical and geographical region of Western Russia, the ancient center of the country, in the south-western part of the Russian Plain. It shares borders with Great in the east and northeast, Belarus to the north, Moldova in the southwest, as well as with foreign countries - Poland, in the north-west, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania to the south-west and south. Southern coast of Ukraine washed by the Black and Azov Seas. "
The beginning of Belarus: "Belarus (Belarus) - a historical and geographical region of western Russia, located in the western part of the Russian Plain. Bordered on the north and east of Great Russia, and Ukraine to the south, north and north-west of Lithuania and Latvia, as well as abroad - in the west of Poland."
The beginning of Moldova: "Moldova (Moldova, [1]) - a small region in the south-western Russia, located on the south-west of the Russian Plain. On the west it borders with Romania, with the remaining sides by Ukraine."
No changes have been made to the Romanian version of any of these pages. Unfortunately, I do not speak Russian & don't have an account on ru:wt, so I don't know what to do with these edits, since the user is very sensitive/critical to our actions blocking such edits. AHeneen 03:43, 19 September 2012 (EDT)
I think that you better leave them to those who speak Russian and know the countries in question. The fact that the ru admins do not take any actions means that the changes are correct. Just for your information, the literal meaning of Belarus is "White Russia", which is also reflected in the German name "Weissrussland" (please, go and remove it from German Wikitravel). Historically, we had the regions of "White Russia" and "Black Russia" that together form "Западная Русь" = "Western Russia". Therefore, your concerns are absolutely unsubstantiated. Please, focus your activity on the places and languages that your really know. 04:09, 19 September 2012 (EDT)

Hello, could you please be more accurate in your reasons/descriptions when blocking an IP? For example, don't say "Repeated vandalism" when an IP has only made one edit.

Thanks! sumone10154(talk) 23:22, 16 September 2012 (EDT)

I will. Thank you for the feedback! Still learning :) IBcash 12:30, 17 September 2012 (EDT)
