Qingdao Wikitravel

Hi Claus,

Thanks for the additions and keep up the good work it is much needed. My concern is that if times, dates, or details of events are placed on WikiTravel then the cite to where the information came from should also be included. Original and current information on the Qingdao Beer Festival[1] came from the source cited. In fact, last year the beer festival was NOT held during the normal dates due to the Olympic Sailing Regatta and Qingdao China Guide was the first to make this information public.

The YinHai International Yacht & Sailing Club[2] details regarding the ferry to Huangdao is NOT found on YinHai's web site but rather on Qingdao China Guide, which is the original source of the information regarding the ferry to Huangdao.

Copenhagen

Hey Claus, the VFD page had an overhaul this weekend, and many of Beijing pictures (and Kalundborg and others) got deleted. You might want to look them over and delete the red boxes that came up. Remember when you look for images they must be licensed PD (public domain) or either CC-by (Creative Commons-attribution) or CC-by-sa (Creative Commons-attribution share alike)

On flickr, press advanced search (appears after you click search once), go to the button of the advanced search page and check all boxes in the creative commons section (only search creative commons content, use commercially and content to modify). When you find an image it is a good idea to verify the license, go the bottom of the right hand column and check there is no dollar and equation mark symbols, it might sound complicated but after a while it just becomes second nature.

On Wikipedia close to all of the images are compatible, but do a brief check anyway. --Stefan (sertmann) ^talk 10:25, 26 October 2009 (EDT)

Patrolling

Hey Claus, it's awesome to see you adding templates to the many stub articles, thumbs up! If you feel like getting more involved in the nitty gritty bits of WT management, another task that could really use some help is the Recent changes patrol. At the moment me and Burmesedays seem to be doing the lions share of the patrolling, but the more users involved in this, the less tedious it gets - the ultimate goal is making sure every change is patrolled, and we are closer to that goal than we have been for a long time.

If you want to help, try go to your preferences (up on the top right), once there select the recent changes tab and check the "Enhanced recent changes (JavaScript)" option. If you go back to the recent changes page now, edits will be grouped together, and edits that has not yet been patrolled will be marked with a red exclamation mark on the left side of the summary. If there are any red exclamation marks try clicking on "(diff/X changes)" and above the summary you'll be able to click [Mark as patrolled] if everything is in order, or (undo) if it's spam, vandalism or touting - if unsure just leave it and someone else will come along and check it.

Ofcourse everyone one is welcome to contribute with whatever they feel like doing, just wanted to make sure you knew about his task. About a quarter sometimes up to half the edits on English wikitravel, are ones that need to be reverted, so it's pretty essential to keeping WT clean and useful for everyone.

Alternative Sub-regions of Maharashtra

On Talk:Maharashtra, I have suggested alternative Sub-regions of Maharashtra that are based on 5 geographical regions, rather than 6 or soon to be 7 administrative/political divisions. This is a nice project, it has been bugging for for quite some time, and it's really good to see someone begin tackling this. After London and New York has been taken care of (and Tokyo once I figure out how to finish those darn maps) I think India is now our biggest headache, partly because Indians seem to be every bit as chaotic online as they are IRL, partly (exactly) because the region structure is one big mess. So thumbs up, I have some idea's for tackling Kerala - have an unfinished draft map lying around, so hold up with that one. --Stefan (sertmann) ^talk 17:27, 14 January 2010 (EST)

I was planning dividing it up into the old kingdoms; Malabar, Kochi and Travancore, the problem is that while the Kochi region is fairly well established, doing the real borders is a bit of a headache - more details here. Another alternative would be this (from Wikipedia)

The Districts are grouped into three on the basis of geographical, historical and cultural similarities.

• North Kerala includes Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad.
• Central Kerala includes Thrissur, Eranakulam and Idukki.
• South Kerala includes Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam.

Maps

Hi Claus. Great to see you producing some maps! I see though that you are not putting any credits in the mark-up, just "Own Work". Whilst I am sure that is true, you must be using a base map image to trace from, get the scale, etc? This image should be credited I think. I got confused by this at first and Peter put me straight on the issue. A map mark-up of the PNG file should look something like (using one of mine as an example).

The Liter and NOT the gallon is used in petrol stations. Many American cars' (especially those produced for the domestic market) speed meters are mostly shown in miles and and fuel depots in gallons. This is should be put to avoid potential problems while speeding and fuelling.

Dear Claus, thanks for informing me that I'm not allowed to remove subsections. However:

- I regard this division to be arbitrary and hotels charging travellers more than INR 5000 a night can't really be called "Mid Range". So, where to put these?

- Instead, I completed every listing with a price-range in order to let the visitor decide himself what would be appropriate.

- There was a notice that "this section seems to contain commercial plugs and needs editing to restore balance". I did so removing listings without useful informations (like "Hotel soandso, great place to stay").

Hello again. Thank you for "detouting" the Calistoga page. I think I was a little over zealous when I wrote it. At least now I know what "detouting" is. I do, however, take issue with your subsequent editing. The changes you made at first weren't grammatically correct and the second editing made the first sentence read oddly. I object to the part of your page that says "This user is able to contribute with an advanced level of English." I removed the first sentence from the previous edit.

This is licensed to use in all wiki areas by the user. This is a free image and freely available on net. And I own this picture, with permission from its original user- Bimal K.C, a freelancer photographer and my friend, who has given permission to me.

All pictures currently in Kerala page, mostly belongs to wikicommons and used extensively in other wikipedia, thereby licensed use in Wikitravel.

Another picture- the Athirapally Waterfalls, also a picture I got from Wikicommons, and hence licensed to use in Wikitravel.

Maps

Really well done Claus! Looking at this image:CentralNordsj.png, you really seem to have it cracked now. Excellent map. A few very minor problems with the park labels and the pattern shading, but those are easily put right. Great to have another map maker here as I think it is the single most important thing we do. I will make one request about markup. I have initiated a discussion about this at the Shared pub, as I believe all maps using a CC licenced base source like OpenStreetMap should include a credit and link in the markup. Not too many comments on this yet, but it makes sense to me as we insist on such credits for image sources (Flickr, Commons etc). A suggested map template markup would be:

White works well as a park label when you write over the top of a park pattern and there are no paths and roads in the way, eg here. Otherwise, you might want to try dark grey italics next to the park, as in this example. I think on this particular map, white might still work ok if you use the dejavu condensed bold (must be bold) font. On the shading, I now see what you have done with the dark grey diffusion layer (meaning out of the region) over the top of the water and park shapes which cross the line. That gives the two tone effect on those objects. Not a big thing, but that looks a bit strange to me. I would raise the parks and lakes layer to be above the dark grey diffusion layer - see for example Burundi and DR Congo. That is of course just my own personal opinion :). I see you removed a listing from Samui South Coast? This must have been a mistake as Samui South Coast is actually a subdistrict of Ko Samui, that's where the listings are supposed to go. Hi Claus. I wrote a section about Gorgora (a beautiful small town near Gondar) but you removed quite a bit of it and split it up so it's no longer clear that it's one section about a different place that you could take an excursion from Gondar to. You also removed details ofan excellent guide who showed us around, who I put the details of up with his permission as I think it would be really helpful to other travellers. Please could you explain why you made these changes and would you mind if I changed it back, as I think it really was better this way?

Nakhon Ratchasima

Not sure I agree with the changes you made to Hermitage Hotel. The sentence about it being surrounded by greenery and water was appropriate (IMO) as this marks it out as different from pretty much every other hotel in Korat. Had I just written that it was in a 'nice location' then I could understand the edit. But as I specified why the location was nice I didn't really see the need for the deletion. And why move the sentences about needing a car to get there and the bus to Cambodia to 'Directions'? That was just additional information. I wouldn't be too bothered if those sentences were completely taken out but surely they shouldn't be in 'Directions'.Promphong 01:39, 15 May 2010 (EDT)

Duesseldorf

Hi Claus,

I have seen you have enlaged all photos on the site of Duesseldorf. Do you really think this was a good idea?. It will boost up the amount of data to be downloaded, and not everyone has a fast internet connection. Those who are interested can enlage the photos by themself by clicking on it, the rest will be satisfied by the thumbnails. And think of those guys who print out the article and use it as a guide. They will got much more sheets now, but no more information. And last not least, the big photos cannot allways be located beside the corresponding Article. From my point of view small thumbnails are the best way to supply compacted information and. Swedish and German

Hello Claus,

I recently saw in the history how a Swiss person (Killerduh) wrote that Swedish and German are largely mutually intelligible and you removed it. Truth be told, that is completely true. I'm Austrian myself, and I speak only Austro-Bavarian, German, English, Slovak and Hungarian and not a word of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian, but I really have to say that Scandinavian languages and especially Swedish is a child's play to understand. Like Killerduh I've spent a lot of time in Sweden (7 times), and the only language I've ever spoken in Sweden to anyone is German (German since Austro-Bavarian is more distant from Swedish), and although almost no one was actually able to speak it (except some older people), they had no problem whatsoever understanding me. Even teenagers were able to understand me, and believe me, they make absolutely no effort to even understand Danish due to their fluency in English (that's what they told me), but it still worked. By no means is there any kind of barrier in communication, I speak German, they speak Swedish, it works perfectly well, and that's it.

Reviewing Konark

Hi Claus,

While I was editing the Konark page, I realised that the template has strecthed out. My display setting is 1200 x 800. I could see the horizontal scrollbar which was uncommon in other templates I have worked (Udaipur, Chittorgarh). Could you please help me to fix it.

PNG Other Destinations

Don't understand the logic of your recent edit. On the United States page there is a link to Grand Canyon. There is also a link to Grand Canyon from the Arizona page. By the logic of your deletions on the PNG page we should delete Grand Canyon from the US page. What is Other destinations for if not to highlight interesting places for people to learn about without going through the whole sequence of Country-Region-, etc.? Shep 02:01, 6 June 2010 (EDT)

Other destinations are national parks and other destinations that are not cities. Grand Canyon is a national park and, therefore, listed as an other destination. The ones I deleted in PNG are cities, which should be in the list of cities, regions which should only be in the list of regions, and itineraries which should be in the see section, --ClausHansen 02:10, 6 June 2010 (EDT)

I can agree to New Britain going out. I didn't put it there. But Tufi is not really a city, more an area. You don't visit Tufi town for the sake of the town but for the attractions in the area. Islands are valid Other destinations. It is a moot point if an island which is a region could also be included as an OD...... this has been done several times in other articles. Konark: deleted info not specific to the city

Hi Claus. I'm surprised to find that all my hard work has been deleted (with comments - 'deleted info not specific to the city'). First, the entire piece is a product of research work from my own travel to temple architectures of India, websites that contain key and updated information on Konark. The work instead that you have Undo is factual sloppy, lacks narrative, and key travel information.

I did that because I found that the description does not have any specific relation to Konark but could just as well be put in any other Indian city featuring important temples. I see no reason why this description should be hidden in the Konark article, rather it should be incorporated in the India article. Dindigul District

Dindigul district is a district in the state of Tamilnadu and it is clearly mentioned that Dindigul city is the capital of this district. So this can not be merged to Dindigul city as the places mentioned in this page are in the Dindigul district and not in the main dindigul city. Southwestern Tamil Nadu is so far not subdivided in subregions (except for Dindigul District). This is why I suggest we merge the district article into the city article. However, the Southwestern Tamil Nadu article does have more than nine linked cities which is an argument for subdividing (ie keeping Dindigul District region article, establishing the other three region articles and moving cities to the respective region articles). I would prefer to wait with the further sub-regionalisation until the present articles are further developed, but either way is fine for me. Deletion of dive site?

We saw that you've deleted the dive site Dive site Vagnhärad limestone quarry without (as far as we can see) any reason given. We would be happy to know if the guidelines was not followed or what the idea was. Because we do think there is place for this articles. So it is better you improve the article instead of removing it.

Sorry for not explaining why. The reason is that the dive site is not a destination (it does not have a place to sleep and does therefore not qualify for an article) but is rather an attraction or activity, which should be listed within the relevant destination article (Stockholm, I guess), --ClausHansen 02:17, 9 July 2010 (EDT)

Yes, you're right, that seems like just another village. While "Iskrets", "Iskrec", and "Искрец" (alternative spellings of the village's name) turns up lots of results in google, none of them seems important enough from a travelling perspective. South Ossetia

I made that change to be consistent with Abkhazia and Nagorno-Karabakh. South Ossetia was a sub-sub-region of Georgia, which appears to be undesirable. Further, in the Georgia (country) article it is stated that the disputed areas are excluded from the regional hierarchy proper, --ClausHansen 09:46, 9 August 2010 (EDT)

I see you've been changing many Polish IsPartOf-tags. This is a lot of work, and before you start with it, I think it's better if we first finish the Poland regions scheme. Regions

IMHO this is equally important as the amount itself. Prices do change rapidly and if i see a timestamp of a price marked with 2005 i am usually tempted to update it...

I agree with Geert, specially in countries with more than 10% inflation a year and not so many contributors to update the data as Mongolia. Paper guidebooks of Mongolia are obsolete long before their next edition. The reader needs to know how old is the information. Changes for the worse

Hi Claus, you edited two of my articles, Chuxiong and Congjiang. Both changes take away legitimate information and add nothing but mistakes that are detrimental to the articles' quality. I would just go ahead and revert them, but you seem to be an experienced member of this community. I'd like to hear about your motivation for those changes before doing so.

Hey, thanks a lot for your work on Brazilian region maps. I just saw this one and I have a couple of suggestions. First, I think all four colors in the color scheme are too similar. At first glance I though it was all one color. Could you maybe replace them with colors that are a little less washed-out? Second, the rivers on the left side of the map are supposed to match up with the state borders, but they are offset quite a bit in some places. On that note, and again expressing my appreciation that you are making these Brazil maps, I have a couple of suggestion on the South Brazil region map.

• Rio Grande do Sul looks a bit weird without its two big lakes. Could we possibly get those in there?
• All the roads you put on the map are N-S roads, giving it an odd striated look, while there are actually important W-E roads too that I'd like to see represented, such as BR277, BR369, BR280, BR285, etc..
• I think the selection of 9 cities is a little off; it even contains cities that didn't even make the cut of 9 cities at the states level. There should probably be a discussion about which 9 are best (as well as to add some more Other destinations). For now though, I'd say that at the very least we need to take off Vila Velha and Rio Grande and add Londrina and Santa Maria.
