Hello, ChubbyWimbus! Welcome to Wikitravel.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Wikitravel:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. PerryPlanet Talk 11:18, 17 February 2009 (EST)

And let me just add a prop(s) for the work you are doing improving Okayama, keep it up and we will be able to feature it on DOTM or OtBP. --Stefan (sertmann) Talk 09:10, 19 February 2009 (EST)

Thanks from me too! But please do create the articles for the places you just added to Off the beaten track in Japan, red links in that list aren't much use to anyone... Jpatokal 09:39, 19 February 2009 (EST)
One more voice to add to the chorus - your name has been showing up a lot on Special:Recentchanges lately, and the cleanups and other additions you've made have been very much appreciated. Thanks! -- Ryan • (talk) • 11:55, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

Japan edits

I was just looking at the bar information you added to Japan, and I was wondering whether some of it would be better in Drink rather that Respect. I think its about nightlife, and bars, so that it should go in the Drink section. What do you think? --Inas 00:12, 20 February 2009 (EST)

Actually, now that you've brought it up, I think you are probably right. I initially saw the "Gay Travellers" headline and decided to add more information without noticing that it was under the heading "Respect". I placed it under the "Drink" Category as requested, but I feel that it seems out-of-place, as "Gay Bars" is not a drink and the rest of the subcategories are drinks... I think the information I posted is at least of SOME value, but it doesn't seem to belong in any of the categories... Do you think it looks okay as it is? (As a sidenote from a newbie: How can I contact you or other users through their pages? Is it best just to keep the threads here on my page?)
It does look out of place where you put it among the list of drinks. How about up higher under the Where to drink section? Texugo 02:05, 20 February 2009 (EST)
Thanks for the suggestion. Although it would look better if other types of bars or nightclubs were listed, I think perhaps the gay bars have found their place. If you think it still looks out of place though, feel free to comment or even to play around with it yourself, if you have an idea on how best to present the topic. Thanks for pointing it out. I definitely do not intend to make things sloppy with my additions. ChubbyWimbus 03:45, 20 February 2009 (EST)
The gay bar info was listed twice in Drink...? I trimmed it down to one paragraph in "Where to drink". It would be great if you could add some listings of individual places to Tokyo/Shinjuku and Osaka. Jpatokal 01:13, 21 February 2009 (EST)
I've added 5 or so of the best reviewed gay clubs/bars in Osaka, making it look like quite a queer-friendly city, since there are not that many other listings. haha. It also highlights the need to format the previous entries. If I get time I'll do that. I'll try to get some listings for Tokyo within the next couple days. ChubbyWimbus 03:58, 21 February 2009 (EST)

Hey, just wanted to make sure you understand that my little rant was absolutely not directed towards you. On a totally separate note, I've noticed that isIn and geo|lat|long tags are appearing after you signatures. You should only need to sign with the four tildes (~~~~). --Peter Talk 18:58, 5 March 2009 (EST)

Oh, that's fine! As someone said, I'm still rather new, and although I try not to do stupid things, like reporting content from the founders, I see that it happens. My concern was really with the star status, and I'm surprised that it turned into such a lengthy debate! I will test that signature out now. Thanks! ChubbyWimbus 05:19, 6 March 2009 (EST)

Do you have descriptions that you're planning to add for the Tamashima and Kojima area listings that you added to Kurashiki? Gorilla Jones 02:23, 11 May 2009 (EDT)

Ah, I would have to think about that. The Kojima area is fairly well-known. The Tamashima area is less so, except that it has the Shinkansen line. What sort of information would you suggest putting there? The Kojima area is most famous for views of the Seto Inland Sea, although the Jeans Factory and a few of the temples/shrines are well known. The Tamashima area isn't well advertised in English or Japanese. I have more information about it, but I'd have to find it... ChubbyWimbus 07:51, 11 May 2009 (EDT)
I'd suggest putting addresses and descriptions for the listings that are there, such as — where is Entsu-ji? When is the Seto Ohashi Bridge Museum open? Why should a traveler make the time to visit the Shimotsui Castle Ruins? That sort of information. (Names alone don't do anybody much good.) Gorilla Jones 08:31, 11 May 2009 (EDT)
Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you wanted a nicer general description of the areas! Sorry. I can start working on adding some of this information. ChubbyWimbus 08:36, 11 May 2009 (EDT)

Get out

I appreciate the effort, but I'm not really sure it's sensible to list neighboring prefectures in the "Get out" sections, and there's been some talk about removing it from region templates entirely. People go to attractions, not prefectures... Jpatokal 09:32, 15 May 2009 (EDT)

Ah, thanks for the heads up! I'll stop adding them then. :) ChubbyWimbus 09:35, 15 May 2009 (EDT)

My Bad!

I just looked on wikipedia... ninjas ARE Japanese after all XD sorry!

Nice work on Tottori! Gorilla Jones 08:20, 20 May 2009 (EDT)

Kyoto Districts

I've added a couple of notes to Talk:Kyoto on the matter of moving to district sub-pages. Please let me know what you think. For my part, I think the main article is getting too long and unwieldy for its own good; it's probably time we spun off at least a couple of districts (to start) in order to improve readability. (Full disclosure: I'm posting this same message on the Talk pages of other users who have actively participated on Talk:Kyoto in the past. No spamming intended.) --Diego de Manila 21:13, 22 May 2009 (EDT)

Should it be useful, the pre-sorted hotel listings for all districts are in my sandbox. Also some replacement text for the main article once all the districts are live, though eventually it needs to be expanded a bit (really, what is there to say about midrange hotels?) - Dguillaime 01:42, 21 June 2009 (EDT)

Novi Sad

I just clicked rollback on this, noticing what appeared to be random chars in the text. But I noticed that I reverted your change, so I apologise if I stomped on something when you were in the middle of doing something. --inas 21:56, 10 June 2009 (EDT)

I don't know what happened, I was trying to revert the same change as you, I think. Anyhow I have fixed it now. Thanks. --inas 22:08, 10 June 2009 (EDT)

I'm working on a Chugoku map. I'm currently including the top nine cities as listed in the Chugoku article, plus Iwakuni and Onomichi. Are there any other Chugoku cities/locations you have plans for, so I can include them? Gorilla Jones 21:39, 12 June 2009 (EDT)

Probably just those two regions for now. But if you're planning to work extensively on any of the Chugoku or Shikoku prefecture pages, let me know — it wouldn't be hard to break out an individual prefecture and do a solo map for it. Gorilla Jones 23:54, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

I'd suggest leaving that Momotaro paragraph at the top of 'See', since (as it states) the statues are scattered throughout the city — they're something to look for, wherever the traveler goes. Gorilla Jones 11:54, 14 June 2009 (EDT)

Exchange rates

Per Wikitravel:Country_article_template, country articles should rough conversion rates for major currencies used by English-speaking travelers. Jpatokal 03:52, 15 June 2009 (EDT)

I'd suggest creating Daisen the city first and redirecting Mount Daisen there; they can always be split if the mountain ends up needing a lot of content. Jpatokal 22:24, 16 June 2009 (EDT)

Usable -> Outline

Noticed that you just downgraded Guanzihling from usable to outline -- why? It's got info in all of Get in, See, Do, Eat and Sleep. Jpatokal 02:07, 27 June 2009 (EDT)

Okayama lead pic

I don't agree with your pic change for Okayama -- see Wikitravel talk:Destination of the Month candidates#Okayama lead pic, please. Jpatokal 02:57, 10 July 2009 (EDT)

Adachi Museum

>I noticed you deleted the comment "the museum often feels a bit too stuffy and pretentious"

If you feel that should remain then by all means put it back. I enjoy art, but pretty much all art museums seem pretentious to me. So calling an art museum pretentious seemed unnecessary, especially one with largely modern art.

>I think the description needs to counter all the glossy reviews to say that it is not quite as nice as other sources may lead people to believe.

Fair enough, but almost everything written in the museum description before sounded rather negative. Seemed to me a place rated #1 in the world should at least mention that. I was trying to present data, like that most of the art is modern art. People who like art probably will then not go in expecting traditional style art.

>I believe this garden was voted "Best in Japan" (not the world) by the American Journal of Gardeners magazine

That write up sounds much more balanced. I think it was rated best Japanese garden in the world (not best garden), which you WOULD rather expect to be in Japan.

You're welcome! Gorilla Jones 01:38, 27 July 2009 (EDT)

Discover help

Thanks much for the help with Wikitravel:Discover; it's excellent to have someone putting in new trivia. One request, however. When you do, please make sure the new trivium goes at the end of the "Upcoming" list rather than interspersed with other items. The list is treated as a FIFO stack and sequencing works best if new stuff is added at the bottom. Anyway, thanks for the help! Bill-on-the-Hill 23:50, 29 July 2009 (EDT)

I think User:Jpatokal is the man to talk to, though it may require the folks at Internet Brands to push some buttons. --Stefan (sertmann) Talk 13:47, 1 August 2009 (EDT)

Hey, do you have any idea how to make the watchlist email you notifications if something got edited? Or is that not an available feature? Azolotkov 21:43, 3 August 2009 (EDT)

Tottori Map

Thanks, I added those two listings to the map. Anything you can recall from the Tottori City History Museum that might enliven the description? An example of one of the exhibits would do. As for the Ekimae Market, I'd put it under 'Buy' if it has a significant amount of non-edible souvenirs, 'Eat' if a traveler could get a meal there (or could, say, put together a picnic basket for the dunes that's significantly better than what they could grab at a convenience store), and 'Drink' if you're intending to highlight a specific bar there. If it's just a local produce market, I'd probably omit it. Gorilla Jones 01:16, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
