I've added your name to Wikitravel:Administrator nominations. I know you're on the road right now, but it would make me pleased as punch if you'd be willing to take on this job. --Evan 01:18, 6 January 2007 (EST)

Hey, just an FYI you can go into your preferences (links up on the right top nav) and check the box to automatically mark your edits as patrolled... I think we can trust you ;-) Maj 23:51, 20 January 2007 (EST)
I've flipped your bits this morning so you're now part of the "sysops" group. You should see some new tabs on each article page, and a few new links (like "rollback" and "block") on other pages. Feel free to ask questions if you need to. You may need to log out and log back in to see the new links and stuff. --Evan 11:23, 21 January 2007 (EST)
Cool, I see them! So far I think I understand, and will go easy with them. Thanks again! ::: Cacahuate 12:11, 21 January 2007 (EST)

Social action?

Yeah it is, but this trip is gonna be a bit more action, although it will be just as sociable! I'm planning to work on a project in Nairobi called FOCUS, which is basically a Christian project working in the slums of Nairobi which equips people from the local university to help the people in the slums. It should be pretty awesome - I've done similar work in High Schools in Maseru, Lesotho before. This FOCUS project is supported by Tearfund and I'll be out there for about 6 weeks or so. It's gonna be absolutely immense, and living, eating, sleeping Africa is a million times better than staying in the touristy confines of cities and game reserves. Maybe we could have a travel topic on here called making a difference through travel... -- Tim 09:38, 19 January 2007 (EST)

Great work on the Welcomes! Maj 23:17, 20 January 2007 (EST)

Nice cleanups on Swansea, etc! Just wanted to point out to you the templates for hotels, activities, etc... since you're doing so much manual of style work, you might as well convert listings using those  :) If you haven't seen them already, they're accessible right from the "edit" box when you're editing a page, just scroll down a bit... they look like this: listing name="" address="" phone="" email="" fax="" hours="" price="" url=""></listing> Thanks again! ::: Cacahuate 11:57, 22 January 2007 (EST)

Thanks - it had needed doing for sometime. Yes, I had noticed the templates, and if I had used them from the beginning, I would have continued to do so. However, cutting each name, address, telephone number etc, etc and pasting it between the correct brackets is quite laborious and, to be honest, I felt that the general overall effect was about the same. Maybe in the future I can do it slowly, section by section. Anyway, thanks for your feedback and help. Frequenttrekker 22:22, 22 January 2007 (EST)

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I did just have a quick look at this site this guy claims to be from, and its not what i chonqed, so its okay! The one I chonqd was very different, and is definitely not this Dominica search page he mentioned! The one I chonqd is here [1].

As for unchonqing someone, it might be possible, but I'm not going to do it in this case - he added a completely unrelated link to our wiki, which constitutes wikispam. The whole point in spammers spamming wikis is that even when it gets editted out, the link is still sitting in the history pages, and thus whenever search engine bots come and read through all the links on wikitravel, his will get read, thus increasing his websites page rank. What chonqing a site does (I think!) is submits the offending link to a database of known wikispammers which gets passed onto search engines so that their pageranks are fair... Check out Wikitravel:How_to_handle_unwanted_edits#WikiSpam for more info! -- Tim 14:37, 25 January 2007 (EST)

The timing's gonna be tricky, because I'm flying in on Tuesday night. What time is your flight on Wednesday? Jpatokal 08:26, 4 February 2007 (EST)

That's gonna be a bit of a tight squeeze, because I'm based in Gurgaon (~20km to the south) and am usually stuck at the office until 6 PM. Maybe I could pop into the city for dinner and give you a lift to the airport? Whereabouts are you based in Delhi? Jpatokal 09:03, 4 February 2007 (EST)
OK. I gotta check with my driver (ah, the perks of business travel) tomorrow if he's available Wed night, will let you know by the end of the day. Jpatokal 09:20, 4 February 2007 (EST)
Sorry for the delay, but yup, I've got the driver for all day Wed, so just let me know where to meet up? You can also reach me at +91-987-1842182. Jpatokal 10:48, 6 February 2007 (EST)

Hi there, you've left India...

Hey Cacahuate, I believe you're done with the 2 year trip. How was India like?? --Upamanyuwikitravel 05:17, 9 February 2007 (EST)

Well, fantastic of course! I'm in love with India, which is why I spent 1 of those 2 years there... and I could still come back and see more, such a rich country. But alas, work needs to be done, and that's best done in LA, for me at least! Good work on Shimla, etc by the way! - Cacahuate 21:56, 11 February 2007 (EST)
Great to hear that. Thanks (btw, Shimla is a DotM candiadate now). Am currntly working on [[India {West}]] and hope to work on all the regions of India, so that the country article can be pushed towards a star.

Take care -- Upamanyuwikitravel 10:12, 16 February 2007 (EST)

Sacred sites of India

As you suggested, I have set up a page exclusively for Indian sacred sites. If you get time, please take a look. Your changes and suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks. WindHorse 04:26, 18 February 2007 (EST)

North Hollywood

There doesn't seem to be any consensus yet on how to handle all of the mini-cities in LA (Talk:Hollywood (disambiguation) has some discussion, amongst other places), but I went ahead and created a North Hollywood article rather than put a sleep listing on a regional article - I'm worried that including hotels on region articles opens up a whole new front for the "which nine?" debate that is probably best avoided at all costs. If needed we can always redirect this article later, but it was already linked from the San Fernando Valley article so it probably would have been created eventually anyhow. -- Ryan 04:57, 18 February 2007 (EST)

No worries - that's probably a better solution... at some point I'll create districts for the valley if someone else doesn't do it first - Cacahuate 05:13, 18 February 2007 (EST)

I responded to your question on Shared. I can comb through the licenses and pick out the smallest differences but that will take me a while. -- Sapphire 19:19, 18 February 2007 (EST)

Hi there! Well, that's what I get for being too eager to help out (hehehe). I just noticed that there were a series of edits to Berneray being done by an anonymous IP (that is, an unregistered user:, who was making mass deletions of information on the page. Since they weren't offering any sort of explanation as to why they were doing what they were doing, there was no way to verify that the deletions they were making were valid. So I reverted all the deletions that person had been making. I see that Wrh2 reverted them even further, so I guess I didn't go far back enough with the edits I made. Anyway, sorry for jumping the gun there. Oh, and yes, I've been doing a lot of work over on WikiCars as well. It's looking better every day, but it'll be quite a while before our community is as large as WT's. We have been trying to take some cues from WT, though, and it's been helpful. - Pastrami on Ry 17:34, 21 February 2007 (EST)

Oh okay then. Glad to know I wasn't causing trouble! =) - Pastrami on Ry 17:42, 21 February 2007 (EST)

Deletion archives

Hey - probably just an oversight, but in case not I just wanted to leave a quick note to say that if you delete a file that is on the VFD page like Image:Renee zellweger.jpg, be sure to remove the deletion discussion from the VFD page and to archive it on Wikitravel:Votes for deletion/February 2007. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Ryan 20:00, 21 February 2007 (EST)

Just wanted to second this, particularly the part about the archiving. It's important to keep archives of the deletions, so that if things get re-created rapidly (as sometimes happens), the archive can be consulted and the offending article can be speedy-deleted. Anyway, thanks for the help with the VFDs. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 23:10, 18 April 2007 (EDT)
Yep, sorry, forgot about that one – cacahuate talk 02:05, 19 April 2007 (EDT)

Regions in New Mexico

Uh, why did you make all those changes to the region structure for New Mexico? Both the parenthetical form and non-parenthetical ones are in use for states, and because New Mexico is a fairly well-developed state as regards sub-pages, now there is one heck of a lot of redirect-fixing that needs to be done. Could you at least help on that, please? -- Bill-on-the-Hill 18:57, 23 February 2007 (EST)

Well, thanks much for trying. However, there's now a "cascade" of other problems connected with known glitchiness in the "isIn" breadcrumb code. When the regions got rewired, the breadcrumb trails for most links became busted. I'm working on it. No good deed goes unpunished!... -- Bill-on-the-Hill 17:47, 24 February 2007 (EST)
The ones where I'm seeing trouble are in the North Central region. Haven't checked the others yet. I'm working on them. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 17:54, 24 February 2007 (EST)
I've never seen a solution to the busted-breadcrumbs problems other than the twiddles. This is a known bug, and I think Evan has it on his to-do list. Aha! Did you fix the isIn entries at the end of the articles? -- Bill-on-the-Hill 18:07, 24 February 2007 (EST)
Well, I've found several articles for the state that still have the old isIns. Hacking away... -- Bill-on-the-Hill 18:15, 24 February 2007 (EST)

Babel in Hindi

No offence, Cacahuate, but the grammar is tragically wrong.

hi-0 यह सदस्य हिन्दी भाषा में नही है। Literal Translation : This user is not inside the Hindi langauge. You wanted to use the word for cannot comprehend and ended up using नही which means "no" or "is not".

Note: Deshi does not mean native in that sense. Maatribhaashaa is the correct word for native language.

hi यह सदस्य हिन्दी भाषा में देशी है।

I will change the text.

I know it needs help, but slowly slowly... I'm heading to bed now... I was on HI for a minute earlier, but I'm tooo tired and Hindi requires way more energy from me than English where I can edit without making my brain hurt  :) My work should ease up soon, then maybe I can do alot more over there. FYI, my Hindi really sucks... I doubt I'll be able to translate a page like that, unless I just use a babel website... which I'm fine with doing, but probably won't produce the most accurate results. I'll play around with it soon. What I'd rather do is start creating a bunch of pages and putting templates in them, to encourage people to start filling in info. Good night  :) – cacahuate talk 03:26, 15 April 2007 (EDT)

Havelock Island

I like it. Putting the symbols on their own layer and separate from Annotation(en) is a brilliant idea, that makes translating it a lot easier since someone can just create a Annotation(other language) layer and translate that to match what you already have. I think we should make the Symbols layer part of the template and note it in Wikitravel:How to draw a map. Only problem I see with your map is the font. You should install and use Blue Highway [3] or here [4] --NJR_ZA 08:03, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

You are definately right about the scale, I have not really noticed before, but it does look a lot better with thin lines. I'll fix that on the template and add the Symbol layer. The font is already Blue Highway throughout, but Bitstream will be substituted on any pc that does not have blue highway installed. --NJR_ZA 01:16, 27 April 2007 (EDT)

Africa (Uganda)

I'm not very familiar with the area, but that does seem to make sense from a travel point of view. Most travelers visiting Uganda will probably do it while visiting East Africa and enter it either from Kenya or Tanzania. The Uganda article already states that it is in East Africa (Though the breadcrumb states it is in Central Africa). I think we should go ahead and move it. --NJR_ZA 03:18, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

Howdy Cacahuate,

Would you mind writing the HI go-between reports for May and June? I'm leaving for Calcutta tomorrow (yipee!) ... and although I'm taking my laptop, wi-fi hotspots are pretty limited out there... so I doubt if I will be able to log in more than once-a-week. And there are many tasks which need to be done on HI —

  • Get the namespace problem sorted out, keep bugging Evan.
  • Custom interface, tell Evan to make you an admin. I'll help out.
  • Country articles for Africa and SA.
  • Please try and recruit others from the Hindi WP.

Plunging forward

So that guy who stated he got yelled at was likely this same guy:

There are more IPs he used , but I'm not looking for all of them. He never really got yelled at, but he was criticized, sometimes harshly, because he would create articles for non-destinations and out of several hundred articles I think we kept no more than five(?) We tried for months and months to get him to take the time, breathe, make sure the article he was about to create was actually a real destination. It wasn't. We then tried baby steps like using a template, but that was too complicated. I think the toughest we got were my comments on User_talk: from Zun kune by Sapphire. -- Sapphire(Talk) • 18:55, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

Now that I think about it the guy in Brisbane might be related to this guy. -- Sapphire(Talk) • 18:57, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

Was there a discussion about allowing "Read" sub-headers? The only discussion I can find is three years old, but maybe I missed something else. -- Sapphire(Talk) • 16:40, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

Not that I can think of specifically, but I didn't realize we had a harness on subheaders... Assuming that a book recommendation would go in either Understand or Cope, what other options are there? Would it be better to just list them in Understand without a subheading? Where is the old convo you found? – cacahuate talk 20:23, 22 May 2007 (EDT)
The discussion was on the talk page for Wikitravel:Where you can stick it. The only reason I'm curious is because when I started off here I asked that question and I didn't get much of an answer. Of course, we've loosened up a bit too since then. Maybe we should ask, just to see what everyone else thinks. -- Sapphire(Talk) • 20:39, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

Yes, only administrators may edit MediaWiki files. The reason being so because these files are sensitive to site performance and security. Imagine if someone used the MediaWiki:Sitenotice to link to a virus.

Bacon dogs

I'm not sure if it's something that's uniquely LA and thus worth mentioning in the Los Angeles article, but bacon dogs are fairly ubiquitous late at night, especially in Hollywood. As to Salvadoran vegetarian food, lists a bunch of recipes, but I've never seen any in the city; of course, I've only been to one Salvadoran restaurant here... -- Ryan • (talk) • 03:16, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Ah, news to me! Maybe I'll add back in the bacon dogs. Re Salvadorean veg, I live in an area that's full of Salv restaurants, and while I haven't eaten at most of them, I'm pretty sure that beef and pork rule... and even if there are veggie options, I just don't think it helped to illustrate the point that that sentence was making anyway... it was sort of random. Station codes

Yeah the net has made railway booking pretty effortless. Is it possible to put up a link for the indian railways?Kroswami 12:36, 4 July 2007 (EDT)

We do have the link up on the India page... see India#Ticketing_2. The "Get around" section of a country page is where we should describe general information about getting around that applies to the whole country. Feel free to add any relevant info you think is missing. I'm going to leave a note at Talk:India encouraging people to start adding these station codes. – cacahuate talk 13:26, 4 July 2007 (EDT)

You already are an administrator, you just refuse to accept it - Excuse me, sir, are you implying that I am a closet administrator? Ha Ha. Actually, I really appreciate your invitation, but, you know, at the moment I really enjoy editing at WT and hope my efforts can help some traveler, but perhaps part of the fun is that I don't feel any responsibility. Obviously, becoming a volunteer admin is not like accepting a high pressured job at Microsoft, but somehow it changes the atmosphere. Furthermore, later in the year I'm going to be in some very remote areas for several months where there are few places with electricity, let alone internet connections. So, maybe let's think about next year when I am hooked up to the web again. Anyway, take it easy, and keep pumping out the inspirational comments. WindHorse 08:20, 9 July 2007 (EDT)

Ah, you know windhorses [5], we just like to hang out in the Himalayas flapping around with family and friends . WindHorse 00:14, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

Split pages

Wes, you had some feedback about the code to tech:optionally split long guides into one page per section. Since I've got a new version of software on review: to do this, I'd love to get your feedback on the shared: tech page. --Evan 13:29, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

Since I'm a Rus-ophile

Thanks for the article! You know, I think the scariest thing about that youth group is that they've managed to get any Russian kids to support a pro-conscription movement—who the heck would want to serve in the Russian Army?! --Peter Talk 15:58, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

Image licensing

Apologies for adding an image released under an incompatible license (Image:373296152 5f5620faf9.jpg). I've had a look at the WT licensing policy, and for future reference would like to confirm. On Flickr, there are six kinds of CC license ([6]). Is it only the top on the list, Attribution 2.0, and the bottom one of these six, Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0, that are compatible with WT licensing. Thanks for your help. No problem! Yes, that is correct... attribution and sharealike are compatible... but nothing that stipulates any tighter restrictions than that (non-commercial, non-modifiable, etc). – cacahuate talk 19:34, 15 July 2007 (EDT)

The issue of sleeping is addressed in this "travel topic" and the reason for the different count between Saphire and myself. I did not include those where one could not sleep. You can sleep in all listed. I think Ohio has about 240 State sites total. I could go on, but I can tell you are starting to get bored. Thanks for the help. I will straighten out the lodges and try to improve the appearance once completed. 2old 12:38, 16 July 2007 (EDT)

I noticed that there is a tag on the florida page, I added much, do you think that the page is complete now?. or does it still need more information. Also can I remove the tag or does someone else remove it. Thanks. Flowergirl 23:38, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
