Stephen Atkins.

Hi and welcome to my Wikitravel page. I am a travel "addict". I caught the bug in my late teens (the mid 80s!!) and since then I haven't stopped. I started by taking package tours and holiday bundles in my first couple of years, even working on a couple to pay my ticket, but I soon became a more confident traveller and took matters into my own hands. It is not hard to plan a trip yourself and with the ease of internet communication and booking, you can have a great experience just planning, researching and booking your trip.

I have been a writer, director and theatre/film artist for most of my professional life. I guess that means I have avoided getting a "real job" but I think I have been able to do this for so long because I am also a bit of a workaholic. I value my time away from the office and studio, and look for travel that will recharge my batteries, get the creative juices flowing again and give me some perspective on the place I occupy on this planet, in this short span of time we call a life.

I've decided to start writing a bit down, about places, the people I meet, the frivolous or profound experiences along the way. Not to say "This is how it's done", but to share perspectives and points of view. I have a keen interest in the arts, history, politics and religions of the countries of the world, so a lot of my writing and travel experiences circulate around these topics. In my opinion, if you travel by following what interests you, you have a far more meaningful and enriching time. This doesn't mean you should go around educating yourself with "stones and bones" tours as if the world is a museum, especially if that bores you silly. You can have an interest in just about anything and create a great travel experience from it.

To start with I'll give a bit of my background and a list of some of the places I have seen. If you want to, you can see a map of this list on my Trip Advisor page.

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Citizenships: Canada, United Kingdom, Australia (permanent resident).

Contributions: Wikipedia, Wikitravel, World66, Schmapp Travel Guides.

Bio: I am a part-time a faculty member of the Capilano University Theatre Department [1], I've taught at Simon Fraser University School for Contemporary Arts [2], Studio 58 [3] and the University of Lethbridge [4]. I am currently the Artistic Director of Human Theatre [5], Co-artistic Director of Fuse Performance Works and an Associate Director with Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre [6]. Recent performance, directing and writing credits can be found on LinkedIn [7] or on the Capilano University Theatre Department web page [8].

Travels: My experience in travel started in 1985 when I was a leader for tour groups to Israel and the USSR. In the 1990s I was as a touring performer and in the early 2000s, a web-based software developer and website designer for travel agencies and tour operators. I've been contributing off and on to various wiki projects with articles on theatre history, arts/culture and travel/food.

Current I've been combining my experience in web-based technology and live performance, touching base in international theatre festivals and collaborating abroad on interdisciplinary performance projects.

Other: Dabbling in photography and digital video editing - getting back into painting (canvas not houses) which I haven't done since college.

Where I'm Goin'.

When I get the time and money-- Spain, Morocco, India and Italy. And I eventually want to hit Egypt, Sudan, Madagascar and South Africa. I figure if I live long enough I have about 25 more years to fit these in before it gets uncomfortable.
