The Mahar Wizaya Pagoda, located on the top of a small hill opposite of Shwedagon Pagoda, was built in 1980 and the high is 169 feets. The shrine relics were donated by the King of Nepal, the country where the Buddha was born more than 2500 years ago and the pagoda’s umbrella was donated by U Ne Win. Thus, the pagoda is also referred to as the General’s Pagoda. It is a mix of traditional and modern style. Mahar Wizaya Pagoda has two entrances, one is in front of the Eastern Stair way of Shwedagon Pagoda and another is on the U Htaung Bo Road. So when you visit the Shwedagon Pagoda, you can also visit to Mahar Wizaya Pagoda. If you enter from the Eastern, you will see many tortoises that were given sanctuary in the lake. Many children and parents can be seen feeding food to the tortoises from a small bridge.

Inside the Stupa, there are two stands and the stupa image is constructed by a new architect and represents a mix of Mon-Burma Culture. The meaning of the gateways is to reflect the eight winning signs of Buddha. A rather unique feature of the Mahar Wizaya is the main stupa in the center of the building .And the stupa is hollow and open to visitors. Inside the main stupa is a round room with a dome on top. In the center of the room is a shrine for the Buddhist relics that were a gift from the King of Nepal. The base of the shrine is a number of Buddha images.

It is open every day from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm. And if you visit the Mahar Wizaya, you can also visit other places, located near it such as Zoo and Kandawgyi Park ,playground(Happy World).
