Upper Palatinate is a very traditional region of bavaria. People from here are very proud of their specific traditions and particularities. A common shared tradition for example relies on so called "House-Names". The meaning of home is hereby of special importance. Every house a family lives in has a certain name, which is mostly rooted in historic circumstances of the house builder. Other particularities are the special location of upper palatinate. People from outside upper palatinate often ironically call the region the "end of the world". This derives from the fact that upper palatinate is shaped by a big forest and was a so called "Grenzgebiet" in the years of the cold-war. Those times are long gone, but there are enough people left to recur on this stereotype, which is also ironically taken up by many artists from upper palatinate referring to their origin as "deep in the forests".
The dialect of Upper Palatinate is often referred to as "not to be understood". And there is quiet a lot of reason for this thesis. Nonetheless, people from the Upper Palatinate are quiet proud of their respective dialect, which outsiders often compare with the barking of a dog. This comparison is seen by people from the upper palatinate as an ironic underestimation of their true capabilities - and reality proves them right.
