Other destinations

Lapland is the traditional homeland of the Sami people, and the Torne Valley at the Finnish border is traditionally Finnish homeland. Around 1900, a new wave of Swedish settlers arrived, as mining and hydroelectric power came to dominate the economy. Later years have seen the rise of tourism and space flight.

The Sami traditionally speak their own language, of the Finno-Ugric family, with several dialects, though Swedish has become dominant.

In Piteå, Skellefteå and some other towns, archaic Norse dialects known as bondska are still alive, nearly as different from Swedish as Swedish is from English.

Get in

Get around

The connex train can be used for some connexions inside Norrland. There are also some bus services, e.g. from Kiruna to Nikkaluokta, close to the Kebnekaise fjällstation. Car rental will often be the only solution for getting to some remote places, assuming there even is a road to get there. In winter, snowmobiles are very popular, and cross-country skiing as well as dogsled are other options.

Norrland will be of interest primarily to nature lovers, and hikers will find there the only remaining area of true wilderness in Europe. But the mines of Kiruna or the ice hotel are other points of interest.

Hiking, Nordic skiing, Alpine skiing.
