The University of Rhode Island is a public institution of higher education located in Kingston, Rhode Island.


The University of Rhode Island, also referred to as URI, is a public institution offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs. URI is the largest public university in Rhode Island, with 13,589 undergraduate and 2,900 graduate students enrolled. URI is comprised of 9 different colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Continuing Education, Engineering, Environment and Life Sciences, Human Science and Services, Nursing, Pharmacy, and the Graduate School of Oceanography. The university was established in 1892.

Get in[edit]

  • From the North- Take 1-95 South to Exit 9 (Route 4 South) in RHODE ISLAND, follow Route 4 to Route 1 South. Stay on Route 1 until the intersection of Route 138 West. Route 138 West will bring you to the University.
  • From the South- Take 1-95 North to Exit 3A (Route 138 East). Continue East on Route 138 to the University.
  • From Newport- Follow Route 138 West over the Newport and Jamestown bridges to Route 1. Take Route 1 South to Route 138 West. Follow Route 138 West to the University.
  • By Train- You can take a train into the Kingston Railroad Station if you are coming from almost anywhere in the Northeast Region. There are two different bus lines that go from the station to the university. For information on train times and fares, you can visit Amtrak page.
  • By Bus- If you are traveling to URI from within the state of Rhode Island, you can take the RIPTA which is the public bus system for the state of Rhode Island. Line number 66 will take you directly from Kennedy Plaza in Providence to the URI Memorial Union or line number 64 will take you from Newport to the URI Memorial Union.

Get around[edit]

  • Cars- While students and visitors cannot drive on the inner-campus roads, they can use the main roads on the outskirts of campus. Please note that certain parking lots have specific restrictions, and violators will be towed. Commuters are expected to park in the Fine Arts Lot, Plains Road Lot, or in designated areas on the street. All student residents should park their cars in either the Keaney Lot, Dairy Barn Lot, or Flagg Road Lot. If you are a visitor between Monday and Friday during the hours 7:30am-3:30pm, you should stop in at the URI Visitor Center located at 45 Upper College Road to obtain a visitor parking pass to avoid towing.
  • The Hill Climber- [1]. M-F 8:27am-1:50pm. The Hill Climber is a large, long bus that travels from Plains Road Lot at the bottom of campus, up to the Fine Arts Center at the top of campus. Buses arrive every 11 minutes. This service is free for all URI students.
  • Walking- Cars are prohibited from driving on the roads in the center of campus, so walking is the primary mode of transportation for students.
  • 211 Blue Line- [2]. M-F 7:20am-6:55pm. Like the Hill Climber, the 211 Blue Line travels from the bottom of campus to the top. However, these shuttles also drive through the center of campus, passing important destinations such as the Quad, Memorial Union, and student dorms. Shuttles arrive every 7 minutes between 7:20am-5:00pm, and every 11 minutes between 5:00pm-6:55pm. This service is free for all students.

  • Athletics- [3]. URI has 16 NCAA Division 1 sports teams that belong to the Atlantic 10 Conference, 18 club sports teams, and a variety of intramural sports. Recreational exercise is available at Keaney Gym and the Fascitelli Center for Health and Wellness. Any student with a valid URI-issued ID can use these facilities free of charge.
  • Boss Ice Arena- This ice hockey arena is the home rink for students on the men’s and women’s club ice hockey teams. The arena also offers open skate times, skating classes, and birthday parties. More information can be found at
  • Edwards Hall- 45 Upper College Rd, ☎ +1 401 874-1000. This small auditorium hosts celebrity speakers, free movie screenings, and a variety of other events throughout the school year.
  • Student Organizations- [4]. URI has over 100 student groups, including professional organizations, special-interest clubs, sororities, and fraternities.
  • The Ryan Center- 1 Lincoln Almond Plaza, ☎ +1 401 788-3200, [5]. The Ryan Center is a multi-functional arena that seats nearly 8,000 people. The Ryan Center hosts a variety of concerts, comedic acts, and sport events throughout the academic year.
  • URI Fine Arts Center- 105 Upper College Rd, ☎ +1 401 874-5921, [6]. Main gallery M-F 12:00pm-4:00pm; Box office M-F 10:00am-5:00pm. The Fine Arts Center is both the academic center and performance venue for URI’s various art programs. Patrons can browse the art gallery, attend band and orchestra concerts, and watch theatre productions. Each semester the URI Theatre program produces three stage plays and one musical. Event tickets are $20 or less.

  • Cumberland Farms- 99 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 792-9370, [7]. Daily 5:00am-12:00am. Cumberland Farms is a convenience store that primarily sells food and beverages. The store offers fresh coffee, as well as standard college dorm food, such as microwavable personal pizzas. Cumberland Farms also sells basic grocery staples, such as eggs and milk.
  • CVS Pharmacy- 99 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 783-9440, [8]. M-F 7:00am-9:00pm; Saturday 8:00am-6:00pm; Sunday 12:00pm-6:00 pm. The CVS located at the top of campus sells cosmetics, toiletries, school supplies, snacks, and a wide array of over-the-counter medicines to combat common ailments such as allergies, colds, headaches, and muscle pain.
  • Elle G- 99 Fortin Rd, Suite #135, ☎ +1 401 782-9080, [9]. M-F 11:00am-5:00pm. This small boutique sells accessories, jewelry, and clothing for women. Items range from casual to formal and reflect seasonal trends in fashion. $15-$99.
  • University Spirit Rhode Island- 401-783-6763. You can come to this store in the URI Emporium to buy University apparel, drinkware, and custom Greek Life clothing.
  • URI Bookstore- 50 Lower College Rd, Memorial Union, ☎ +1 401 874-2722, [10]. M-F 9:00am-4:00pm. At the bookstore, students can buy, rent, or sell back course textbooks. The store also offers a wide array of school supplies and official university merchandise. For easiest convenience, place textbook orders online and pick up at store.

Located in Kingston Emporium at the top of campus, this local diner serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Allies offers a wide range of American foods, including sandwiches, burgers, and salads.
  • Butterfield Dining Hall- Butterfield Hall, ☎ +1 401 874-2022, [12]. M-Th 7:00am-10:30am, 11:00am-3:00pm, 4:00pm-8:30pm; Friday 7:00am-10:30am, 11:00am-4:00pm. One of the main student dining halls located on campus. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the school week, excluding Friday, during which it only offers breakfast and lunch. Butterfield offers a different main course everyday, as well as permanent omelet, waffle, taco, and fruit station. Butterfield’s weekly menu can be found on its website. Entry to Butterfield is free for any student with a resident meal plan. For visitors or commuters without a meal plan, breakfast is $8.50, lunch is $11.50, and dinner is $13.50.
  • Dunkin' Donuts- 120 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 783-7778, [13]. Daily 5:00am-11:00pm. There are two traditional Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants on campus: one is adjacent to the Emporium, and the other is located in the Memorial Union. There is also a self-serve Dunkin' Donuts station located in the Center for Biology and Environmental Studies. All three locations offer bagels, donuts, coffee, and other beverages.
  • Mainfare Dining Hall- Hope Commons, ☎ +1 401 874-2011, [14]. M-Th 11:30am-3:30pm, 4:30pm-8:30pm; Friday 11:30am-3:30pm, 4:30pm-8:00pm; Sa 10:00am-3:00pm, 4:00pm-7:30pm; Su 10:00am-3:00pm, 4:00pm-8:30pm. One of the main student dining halls located on campus. Please note that Mainfare is commonly referred to as “Hope” by students, due to its location in the Hope Commons facility. Mainfare serves lunch and dinner throughout the week, as well as breakfast on the weekends. In addition to the daily main course, Hope boasts stir-fry, pasta, burger, cereal, and deli stations. Food is free for students with a meal plan. For visitors or commuters without a meal plan, breakfast is $8.50, lunch is $11.50, and dinner is $13.50.
  • International Pocket Café & Steakhouse- 99 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 782-2720, [15]. Daily 11:00am-11:00pm. The menu at International Pocket Café is quite diverse, featuring Middle Eastern cuisine, as well as mozzarella sticks and cheesesteak sandwiches.
  • I-Zone- 100 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 782-2321, [16]. Daily 11:30am-3:00am. I-Zone specializes in calzones, pizza, stromboli’s, and various other appetizers. On-campus delivery is available until 3:00 am every day.

  • Mia’s Kitchen- 99 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 284-0037, [18]. M-W 9:00am-7:00pm; Th-F 9:00am-8:00pm; Saturday 8:30am-8:00pm; Sunday 8:30am-3:00pm. Mia’s Kitchen offers homestyle breakfast, brunch, wraps, sandwiches, and burgers. Most of the menu items are under $10, which makes this restaurant an affordable option for students.
  • Peking Tokyo- 120 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 788-9588. Daily 10:30am-10:30pm. Peking Tokyo offers a mixture of Chinese and Japanese cuisine, including sushi, soup, friend rice, and teriyaki. Most items are under $10, excluding sushi dishes.
  • Ram’s Den- 50 Lower College Rd, Memorial Union, ☎ +1 401 874-5437, [19]. Located on the main floor of the Memorial Union. One can find eggs, sandwiches, burgers, popcorn chicken, pizza, Asian cuisine, wraps, and a plethora of other snacks. Students with a Resident Premiere or Plus meal plans can access the Ram’s Den three times a day; any further visits require additional payment. Food prices vary. Ram card, cash, and credit cards are accepted.
  • Ronzio’s Pizza & Subs- 50 Lower College Rd, Memorial Union, ☎ +1 401 782-8360. Located on the lower floor of the Memorial Union. Ronnie’s offers a variety of Italian-inspired cuisine, but is known primarily for its pizza. Slices are just $1 on Monday nights after 6:00 pm.
  • The Rhode House- 99 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 284-2844. M-W 11:00am-1:00am; Th-Sa 11:00am-2:00am; Sunday 12:00pm-1:00am. Serves milkshakes, "house bowls," calzones, and panini's. Located in the URI Emporium.

  • On-campus housing- URI offers students 21 undergraduate residence halls, 3 undergraduate apartment complexes, and 1 graduate apartment complex. Students can either choose their roommates or elect to be matched with a random roommate. Freshmen typically live in "corridor-style" dorms with one or two additional roommates. Upperclassmen dorms are "suite-style" and may contain additional amenities, such as a kitchen.
  • Off-campus housing- Many students choose to rent a house off campus in nearby towns like Narragansett , Bonnet , and Scarborough. Students can meet local realtors at URI's "Off-Campus Housing Fair," which occurs once a semester.

Religious Services[edit]

  • Hillel: The Jewish Student Center- 6 Fraternity Circle, ☎ +1 401 874-2740, [20]. The mission of this organization is to educate students of all religious backgrounds about Jewish culture. The Hillel Center boasts a lounge and kitchen for students to use. The program offers holiday services, free Shabbat dinners, and numerous community service opportunities.
  • The Catholic Center- 90 Chapel Way, ☎ +1 401 874-2324, [21]. Daily 7:00am-10:00pm. The Catholic Center offers spiritual counseling, recreational activities, and opportunities to volunteer in the community. The center holds daily mass during the week at noon.
  • Muslim Community Center- 60 Fortin Rd, ☎ +1 401 662-6161, [22]. The Muslim Community Center leads many community service initiatives. In addition, it offers religious lectures, study groups, and social activities open to students from all backgrounds. Weekly service is held every Friday at 1:00pm.
  • Prayer/Meditation Spaces- URI has two locations on campus reserved specifically for quiet reflection, prayer, and meditation. The first room is located on the first floor of the Carothers Library in the 24-hour room, next to the Starbucks stand. The second location is room 137 in Tyler Hall.

  • Narragansett Town Beach- 39 Boston Neck Rd Narragansett, RI 02882, ☎ +1 401 783-6430, [23]. June-Labor Day Daily 8:30am-5:00pm. This long stretch of beach is located a mere 6.5 miles away from campus. Students can swim, sunbathe, jog along the boardwalk, or study on the beach. During beach season, admission is $8 and parking is $10 on weekdays and $15 on weekends.
  • Newport- Newport is a large island located in the middle of Narragansett Bay. At Newport, visitors can savor fresh seafood, relax on miles of coastline, explore historic Fort Adams, and browse through quaint boutiques. Students can catch the 64 RIPTA bus to Newport at the URI Memorial Union.
  • Providence- Rhode Island's capital city is located just 30 miles away from the URI campus. In Providence, students can enjoy fine dining, the arts, nightlife entertainment, and shopping. The Providence Place Mall is one of the city's most popular destinations, where visitors can browse 160 different stores, eat at one of 26 restaurants, or watch a movie at the IMAX theatre. Students can drive to Providence via I-95 North, or take the 66 RIPTA bus, which stops at the URI Memorial Union.
  • Scarborough State Beach- Located at 970 Ocean Rd Narragansett, RI 02882, there are activities for almost all people. During the summer (Labor Day-Memorial Day), there is a $10 parking fee during the week and $14 on the weekends for residents and a $20 and $28 fee for non-residents, respectively.
