Venues

Most events will take place in Tokyo itself, but some football, baseball and softball games will take place in other cities such as Fukushima, Sendai, Kashima and Sapporo.

Seven venues are located within the central area of Tokyo. Some of these were originally built for the 1964 Olympic Games.

Other venues are located in the Bay Area of Tokyo, especially on Ariaka, Odaiba and artificial islands.

The games

There are 339 events scheduled in 33 sports and 50 disciplines. There will be five new sports that will be introduced. These new sports are baseball/softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding. There will also be fifteen new events within existing sports: Madison cycling, freestyle BMX, and 3x3 basketball plus other mixed events in other sports.
