Tenorio Volcano National ParkEarth : North America : Central America : Costa Rica : Guanacaste : Tenorio Volcano National Park
To get to Rio Celeste it is about a one hour bus trip from the town of Guatuso.
By car, get to the town of Bijagua. At north end of the town you will find the road up to the park entrance on the right (if driving north). It is a rocky unpaved road so 4 wheel drive is necessary. You can also park at the bottom and hike up. It is about 7km to the park entrance.
There is a $12 entry fee to the park.
There is a parking lot right at the park entrance that charges $4 to park, or you can park along the road for free.
Guides are also available for approximately $60, but aren't necessary.
The main (and only) trail in the park is a 3km out-and-back hike (6km total) through cloud forest. The trail visits the river, with its magical blue colour, multiple times. The river also has a large and beautiful waterfall, thermal activity, and bubbling volcanic gases. The end of the trail reaches the source of the river, where two smaller rivers with different dissolved minerals chemically combine to form the Rio Celeste.
After heavy rain, the river loses it´s blue colour due to excessive water.
