Tashirojima is a small island in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, Japan.

Understand

The Tashirojima is inhabited by a small population of older individuals as well as by a burgeoning colony of stay cats which has earned the island the nickname "cat island." In the past, Tashirojima's residents were largely silkworm farmers who relied on cats to keep the mice population which threatened the farms on the island under control. The island's fisherman also developed a fondness for the cats and fed them the scraps from their daily catches.
