This article is an itinerary.

Tanami Track (also known as the Tanami Road and the McGuire Track) stretches 1032km from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory to Halls Creek in Western Australia.

The road services a number of Aboriginal communities and gold mines. It is sealed from Alice Springs to 3km beyond Tilmouth Well Roadhouse NT towards Yuendumu NT. Beyond this point there are 3 sealed sections of 8km, 5km, and 24km interspersed with gravel sections. The first 2 of these graveled sections can be rocky and fairly rough, but the longer unsealed section is sandy. This sandy section is about 25km long and passes the Yuelamu (Mt Alan) turnoff at about the half way mark. Beyond Yuendumu the Tanami Road is unsealed all the way to the Great Northern Highway WA.

Fuel can be purchased at the Tilmouth Well Roadhouse and in Yuendumu at Big Shop and Mining Shop. Otherwise there is no fuel available until Halls Creek WA or if you turn off to Balgo WA. The Rabbit Flat Roadhouse has been closed with all signs to it being removed from the Tanami Road.

Entrance to Tanami Road from Stuart Highway

As of December 2010 Rabbit Flat roadhouse no longer sells fuel. Take enough fuel and water for the whole journey.

Get in[edit]

The Tanami Road can be accessed by road about 16.6km south west of Halls Creek WA on the Great Northern Highway or 19.5km north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway.
