"It is important to note that the neighborhood to the West of Greenwich Village is not considered part of the Village itself, and is thus often called the West Village to differentiate itself from its eastern neighbor."
Huh? It's the "East Village" that is not part of Greenwich Village. "West Village" is synonymous with "Greenwich Village," as far as this native and essentially life-long Manhattanite is concerned. Unless someone can back up the quoted assertion, I will come back in a few days and delete it, perhaps replacing it with a remark that Greenwich Village is called the "West Village" to distinguish it from the "East Village."
