South Sudan is a country in East Africa. Formerly a breakaway region of Sudan, it became an independent country on 9 July 2011 after a referendum was held in January that year.

English and Arabic (Juba Arabic) are the official languages of South Sudan; however, Dinka is the most widely spoken language.

Get in

As South Sudan achieved independence only recently, the immigration rules are somewhat unclear. The German Foreign Office advises [1] its citzens that a passport (valid for another six months) as well as a visa is necessary to enter South Sudan. A visa may be issued at the land borders or at the South Sudanese liaison offices, e.g. in Nairobi.

By plane

There are currently no direct commercial flights from outside Africa. So, changing planes is necessary; most airlines flying into Juba depart from Cairo (Egypt), Entebbe (Uganda) or Nairobi (Kenya) to/from where you should be able to manage flights to Europe, Asia or the Americas.
