Rhône is a department in south-eastern France. It is one of the departments making up the region of the Rhone-Alpes.
The department Rhône can be separated in 4 regions :
- The Beaujolais Mounts at the North.
- The main town Lyon in South-East.
- The Lyonnais Mounts in the West.
- The Pilat Massif in the South.
There is a difference between the Rhône being an administrative department, part of the administrative region Rhône-Alpes in France and the river Rhône which is one of the largest in France, rising in Switzerland it enters France from Lac Leman (lake Geneva) and flows through the Alps to Lyon where it is navigable to Valence, Avignon and Arles through the Camargue to the Mediterranean sea. Boat trips are available from most of these towns for varying lengths of trip, depending on the season. Longer cruises are also widely advertised in the summer months. You can take a trip up the Petit Rhone for an hour or two from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue on the Mediterranean coast.
