Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua
The Mayan ruins of Quirigua have been declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for humanity.
This Mayan site Quiriguá is located in the shores of the river Motagua, it prospered due to its strategic position in the route that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mayan lowlands. The central plaza in Quiriguá has one of the biggest dimensions in the whole lowlands. This city is well known for the sculpture that we find there. There are 8 monumental stelas, which were built to commemorate the end of the period Ho’tun and to register other important events. Here you can join a tour or simply walk around and enjoy.
Since when you visit Quirigua you are usually traveling from and to these locations: Copan in Honduras, Guatemala City, Rio Dulce, Flores Island and Antigua Guatemala. You should stay in any of those locations. The nicest and closest place to stay very close to Quirigua is Rio Dulce. If you are visiting Rio Dulce and if you have free time while you are there, you may want to include Quirigua in your plans.
