Pyrgos village is situated in the center of Santorini, 8 km southeast of Fira (the main town of the island). Pyrgos is built like an amphitheater at the top of a hill. This privildged point offers magnificent views all over the island. With a population of approximately 700 inhabitants Pyrgos is one of the most vivis settlements of Santorini all year round. It's long history has not been alternated because of tourism actually, this hillside village was declared a protected settlement in 1995. At the top of the hill there are still visible the ruins of the Venetian fortification- castle or kasteli as the locals call it.
Climb the mountain! There are both road and foot paths to the top. See the view from the monastery. It is quite spectacular. The monastery itself is usually closed, but on rare occasions, you can visit. If on foot, you can take a path down the other side of the mountain to Kamari or Perissa, and see Ancient Thira along the way. Note that the path is not marked -- heading up, it comes off of the left side of the road, very close to the top.
