Puerto Rio Tranquilo is a small village along the Lago General Carrera, 220 km away from Coyhaique.

Get in

From Los Antiguos: There are no direct connection from Los Antiguos to the Chilean border. You can catch a taxi that will bring you to the Argentinian border control and you will need to walk your way to the Chilean border station. Halfway on this road, where the sign "Welcome to Chile" is, you will be lucky to find a minibus from Martin Pescador ready to pick up lost souls all the way to Chile Chico (for 4.000CLP) or all the way to Puerto Rio Tranquilo (for 15.000CLP).

From Chile Chico: if you made it through the border, the minibus from Martin Pescador leaves for Rio Tranquilo at 10:30 from the bus terminal. Tickets need to be bought at the store (Av. Bernardo O`higgins 479).

From Coyhaique: Regular buses make the connection to Puerto Rio Tranquilo and Cerro Castillo.

Beware that the roads from Chile Chico all the way until Cerro Castillo are unpaved - the journey is bumpy!

Get around

Puerto Rio Tranquilo is extremely small and can be walked from one end to the other in under 10 minutes.

The marble caves is what has brought tourists to this little village. The port/beach is filled with booths all offering boat tours, kayak tours and other activities centered on the marble caves. Other activities are also offered such as glacier trekking.

Boat tours for the marble caves lasthe entirest CLP10.000 per person. They are ongoing throughout most of the day, from 7:00 onwards but are not operating when the winds are too strong (a red flag is put up by the harbour authority).

Not many shopping opportunities - bring your food from a bigger city, for ex. Coyhaique or Chile Chico. The supermarkets are small kiosks with a little selection. There is no ATM in town so make sure to have enough cash with you!

La Provencale (Pedro Lagos 18) is a food truck installed in front of the port, owned by a French-Chilean couple offering paninis, waffles, hot chocolate for a decent price and excellent quality.

Mate & Truco (Carr Austral 269) is a small restaurant with a small selection of dishes (pizzas, milanese, etc.) of good quality but relatively high prices for the location (8.000-13.000CLP per course).

Get out

Buses to Coyhaique leave at 9:30 (Aguilas Patagonicas - Monday to Sunday) and 11:30 (Don Carlos - Monday to Saturday) and cost 10.000CLP. When you arrive in town, ask your hostel or around regarding bus schedules in order to know if there is any change in the schedules. No buses run on January 1.

Hitch hiking on the road along Chile Chico - Rio Tranquilo - Cerro Castillo is hard, as very few cars are on the roads.
