Otgontenger Mountain Strictly Protected Area
Considered one of Mongolia's most sacred mountains, Otgontenger is a preserved natural wonder and place of pilgrimage. Like many other religious sites in Mongolia, Otgontenger displays a synchretic fusion of traditional nature worship with Buddhist influences. The mountain is particularly associated with the Bodhisattva [Ochirvaani], whose fierce, ornate statue dominates the base of the mountain.
The mountain is now the seat of the Otgontenger Strictly Protected Area, a 95,510-hectare national park encompassing hundreds of kilometers of pristine mountain ranges and fast-flowing rivers.
Flora and fauna
From Uliastai, you can find a taxi driver willing to drive to Dayan Uul viewing point for T20,000 plus petrol.
Standard park fees apply (T3000/person), and can be paid just past the children's camp, 45 km from Uliastai.
The sanctity of the mountain makes climbing by foreigners prohibited. However, Dayan Uul provides a spectacular view of both Otgontenger and Khuukh Nuur, a beautiful mountain lake.
