Olympia (Greek: Ολυμπία Olympí'a) is a town and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Peloponnese, Greece. This was the site of the original Olympic Games from 776 BC. The flame for each modern Olympic Games is still lit in the town, by a reflection of sunlight in a parabolic mirror, and carried by torch to the place where the games are to be held.

Get in

By train or bus

Take the train or KTEL buses from Patras via Pyrgos which takes around two hours. Since all the station signs are in Greek, pick up a translation card at any train station. You can also travel to Olympia from the port of Kyllini using KTEL buses.

By boat

Cruise ships plying the Adriatic Sea call on the very small port of Katakolo and dock at its jetty, from where it is a five minute walk to Katakolon town. Each cruising season, hundreds of cruise ships call on Katakolo, bringing hundreds of thousands of passengers to the beautiful region of the Peloponnese, eager to visit Olympia, about 18 miles east of Katakolon. There are several options to get from Katakolon to Olympia. including by prepaid ship excursions, by taxi, or by tours.

  • Katakolon Express[3] a private bus service between Katakolo and Olympia designed for cruisers. Must reserve online at least a week before your arrival. Costs range from €10 for the basic Olympia on your own to €60 for the Olympia Special Tour.
  • Olympic Traveller[4] provides several tiers of tours from Katakolo and back starting at €20 for the basic Olympia & Back with quick pick-up times (they don't dally at the port waiting for the bus to fill up).
  • Taxi. Scores of taxis appear whenever a cruise ship docks. Rates are negotiable, but typically a rushed one-hour visit is about €80 and a more realistic 2.5-hour visit is about €100.
