Northern Hungary is a region of Hungary.
The main hub of the region is Miskolc: national and international routes pass by.
Eurocity and intercity trains stops on Miskolc Tiszai pályaudvar as well as express (sebes) and local trains. The main railway line runs from the capital to Miskolc. There are direct trains from the capital to Tokaj. Other larger towns can be reached by changing to regional or local lines, i.e. for Salgótarján with change at Hatvan, for Eger with change at Füzesabony. For times and ticket prices check MÁV page .
There are regular direct buses to the larger towns of the region like Miskolc, Eger, Salgótarján, Ózd. There are direct buses to Aggtelek and Hollókő once in a day. Remote places and villages can only be reached by local bus. For more information check Volán page .
The main road to the region is the motorway M3 (toll). Miskolc can be reached via M30 (toll). Alternatively, the old route 3 can be used (free). Some main roads are in good condition (e.g. route 25 until Eger or route 24 to the Mátra), others are fair, but minor roads can be in poor condition, particularly in the mountains.
• Explore the wine regions: most famous regions are Tokaj (with Tokaji Aszú) and Eger (with Bull’s Blood). Restaurants, hotels, wine cellars organize tours and wine tastings, but visiting local winemakers individually is also possible;
• Trekking the mountains: with many nature parks and reserves, this region is great for trekking, also popular among hunters.
The cuisine of the region is a typical mountain cuisine, affected by Slovakian cuisine in some parts.
The region is famous for strapachka made with sheep cheese and tócsni which is grated potato baked or fried. Typical ingredients are sour cabbage, beans and potato. Due to the mountains and forests game is also popular and people often use mushrooms for cooking; a'la Erdészné usually means cooked with mushroom and bacon. Around Hollókő Palóc style cuisine can be found, i.e. Palóc goulash which is made of meat and green beans.
For the desserts, dough baked and fried is typical. Speciality is Pipics; plain dough in a bird shape baked with one pepper bell (eye of the bird).
• Wine: most famous regions are Tokaj and Eger. Tokaj is famous for aszú, a sweet dessert wine, other types includes Furmint and Hárslevelű (white). Very special and rare is Tokaji eszencia; a speciality made of aszú grapes with no mechanical intervention (grape is hung in gauze to extract the essence of it). The most typical wine in the region around Eger is Bikavér (Bull's Blood), Debrői Hárslevelű (white) and Egri Csillagok (Eger stars, the white Bikavér).
• Pálinka: Gönc is famous for its apricot pálinka.
