North Hollywood

Default Banner.jpg

North Hollywood is a city in the San Fernando Valley. Like many "cities" in the Los Angeles area it is technically a district of the city of Los Angeles, but operates much like an independent municipality. Despite the similar name, North Hollywood does not share a border with Hollywood, which is located several miles to the southeast.

North Hollywood is well-known for an infamous bank robbery in 1997 in which the robbers wore military-style body armor and carried an arsenal of assault weapons, resulting in a shootout that involved over 370 police officers over a period of approximately forty-five minutes.

Get around

The NoHo Arts District is walkable

Art in the NoHo Art Gallery on Lankershim.

North Hollywood is known for its numerous small independent theatres. The most famous is the El Portal on Lankershim and Weddington.

Small boutiques and thrift shops are found along Lankershim between Chandler and Camarillo, and along Magnolia between Tujunga and Vineland. Some of the shops are being replaced by newer trendy shops as North Hollywood gentrifies.

  • Henry's Tacos, 11401 Moorpark St. This original taco stand (circa 1961) is one great reason to make the drive into the San Fernando Valley. Its cheap, authentic tacos are served fast and hot, and have become legendary in the L.A. area. Foods on the menu include: original hard-shell tacos, soft tacos, taco-burgers, cups of rice and beans, milk, coffee, and soft drinks.

Places right across the street from Henry's Tacos include a 7-11, a sushi bar (there are over 200 of the former and latter in the Valley), Jennifer's Coffee, and Holly's Donut. Go down Tujunga Ave. (Henry's Tacos is on the intersection of Tujunga and Moorpark) and you'll reach Vitalli's, the Italian restaurant and the site where Robert Blake's wife was found dead (after he had to go back into the restaurant to retrieve his gun), and Aroma Cafe- a smaller, more cozy version of Starbucks.

Along Lankershim can be found several gems including, Vicious Hot Dogs, Big Mama's Pizza, Eclectic Cafe, Indie Coffee, and Salomi Indian Restuarant.
