Myrtle Beach [2] is a major tourist destination along the South Atlantic coast of South Carolina. It is widely known for its wide beaches, large selection of challenging golf links, excellent seafood restaurants, and outlet-style shopping activities. It attracts over 14 million visitors annually, consisting of tourists from other Southern states or "Snowbirds" from the North, who may own a condominium or timeshare along the coast. It also has more putt-putt courses per square miles than any other place on earth.

While the area itself may be referred to as "The Grand Strand", this term is not simply limited to the city of Myrtle Beach. Several smaller towns to the north and south (Briarcliffe, Atlantic Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Murrel's Inlet, Pawley's Island, and Garden City) in addition to Myrtle Beach make up what is known en masse as the "Grand Strand".

Being a beach town, the tourist season coincides with the summer months, with the season peaking around the July 4th holiday and slowly declining from there. Beware of the last couple of weeks of May and the first few weeks of June - several Bike Weeks, known locally as Harley Biker Weekend for the Harley-Davidson weekend and "Black Bike Week" for the Atlantic Beach weekend (Atlantic Beach is a historic black beach and the draw has always traditionally been black bikers). Traffic during these weeks tends to be horrible, especially during the latter, when in 2005 the city of Myrtle Beach saw it fit to create a new lane, serving only Atlantic Beach traffic, in order to remove some of the glut.

Myrtle Beach is also heavily developed and crowded, in contrast to other Southern beaches, such as the Outer Banks in North Carolina. However, Myrtle boasts a greater variety of attractions. The development of new roads including Highway 22 and Highway 31 have helped tremendously in the way of congestion. It has also opened up avenues for tourists to visit the undeveloped beaches of Huntington Beach State Park.

Get in

By air

  • Myrtle Beach International Airport (IATA: MYR), 1100 Jetport Road, [3]. Current transport includes Delta, Continental, Northwest, Spirit, U.S. Airways and Myrtle Beach Direct Air. Myrtle Beach International is a work in progress as expansion and budget approvals are pending in both the city and county councils. Most guests arriving from either the west coast or overseas fly into a major hub, such as Atlanta, before connecting to their final destination in Myrtle Beach.
  • Grand Strand Regional Airport in North Myrtle Beach also serves the area and is used mostly by private or chartered flights.

By car

From Interstate 95 South, take US 501 South for 66 miles.

Get around

By car

One aspect of Myrtle Beach that is less-than hospitable are its roads. A tourist may find the style of driving in Myrtle Beach to be aggressive, reckless and hard to manage. Myrtle Beach has one of the highest accident rates in the state, due in part to its impatient drivers and oddly-placed roads.

If you must drive, plan ahead - if you are going a short distance (under five miles), then take one of the main roads that runs adjacent to the beach. If you are going a longer distance, try and take one of the interstate roads that branches further out - these are generally clear of traffic, and thus are much more bearable than the city roads.

By bus

Lymo City-wide bus system, fares are $2-5, depending on the distance. Service hours can be limited.

By taxi

There are several private cab services in the area which can run up to $50 for a trip across the Grand Strand. The rate is $2.40 a mile $1.00 for extra passenger, rates are set by the City of Myrtle Beach.

The North Strand is serviced by Trips Taxi, Roadrunner Taxi, Grand Strand Taxi and a few others.

  • The beach The namesake of Myrtle Beach is, of course, the beach. During the high season the beach can be crowded and parking scarce. Staying at a beachfront hotel or within walking distance can make for a more pleasant visit. For those on a budget, however, don't fret - the beach is still basically public, although you may have to fight for a spot during the day. Never underestimate the beauty of the shoreline at sunrise, when the sands are basically abandoned, the temperature modest, and the seashells have yet to have been picked from the night before's wave crashes.
  • Broadway at the Beach - a huge cluster of bars, nightlife, shops, a movie theatre and even an aquarium, Broadway stands to be one of Myrtle Beach's more accessible attractions. It's also crowded, although the Butterfly Pavilion is worth the admission.
  • Barefoot Landing, [4]. The first major tourist center in the area with over 100 shops, great eateries, steakhouses and a brewery, home to the Alabama Theatre and House of Blues, both offering live entertainment nightly.
  • Ripley's Aquarium, 1110 Celebrity Circle, 1-800-734-8888, [5]. Su-Th 9AM-9PM, F,Sa 9AM-10PM. Large Aquarium.

  • Mount Atlanticus, located directly behind the Pavilion, has the best minigolf this city can buy. With two courses, bizarre wall art (including a mural in which God looks suspiciously like Kurt Russell, complete with shades), and strange Ewok-like huts, this place is a must-play. If you make a hole in one at the 19th, you get your polaroid on the wall and a lifetime free pass. Avoid the gift shop and the nauseating blue water and you'll find this a great place with a tongue-in-cheek sense of beachy trash.
  • Myrtle Beach Speedway, located off of US 501, 843-236-0500, [6]. Hosts events weekly such as NASCAR Late Model Stock Car races and drifting events.
  • Myrtle Beach Pelicans, are an Advanced-A Affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The Pelican's stadium, Coastal Federal Field, is located at the intersection of 21st Avenue North & Robert Grissom Parkway, directly across from Broadway at the Beach. Some current and former Atlanta Braves players who have worn the Pelican's uniform since the team began play in 1999 include Rafael Furcal, Marcus Giles, Ryan Langerhans, Horacio Ramirez, Pete Orr, Adam LaRoche, Jeff Francoeur, and Brain McCann.

  • Coastal Grand Mall - a recently-built massive mall that services large crowds year-round.
  • Myrtle Beach Golf Store, +1 910-575-7377, [7]. Do you have everything that you need for your next golf trip? Myrtle Beach Golf Store has a large variety of golf equipment including golf clubs and other golf accessories.
