Mehamn is in Finnmark.

Understand

Mehamn is a small fishing village located on the small Vedvik peninsula, itself part of the greater Nordkinn Peninsula, at the southern end of the Mehamnfjorden, a bay off of the Barents Sea. It is also Hurtigruten's northernmost harbour. The local population amounts to about 700 people and the main form of income is from fishing, including stockfish. During the period February/March they hang 300 tons of cod for mainly export.

History

Despite it's small size, Mehamn does not lack rich history. At one point they had the biggest whaling station in all of Finnmark. Svend Foyn was the founder of this whaling station which was put into use early spring 1885. After Foyn’s death in 1894, the whaling station was run by Foyn’s whaling company. Svend Foyn also established the Svend Foyn Chapel, in Mehamn starting in 1887.

The Mehamn rebellion was also a big occurance that took place in Mehamn in 1903. The background for the Mehamn rebellion was a period of miserable cod and capelin fishing. The fishermen blamed the local whaling. They believed that the whales chased the fish towards the shore. On the 2nd of June 1903, a large number of them gathered outside the factory. During the following two days, machinery was destroyed, chimneys were torn down, and the large steam boilers were sunk. As result of the rebellion a law was passed ensuring the preservation of the whales in Norwegian waters off the coast of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark.

Mehamn is also infamous for the 1982 air crash. On 11 March 1982, a Widerøe Twin Otter crashed into the sea on approach to Mehamn Airport during flight from Berlevåg Airport, killing all on board. Despite controversies regarding the cause of the crash, clear-air turbulence over the Mehamnfjorden was determined as the official cause.
