The Lugo municipality stretches along over 330 sq. km (127 sq. mi), so it is one of the largest municipalities within the Galicia autonomous region, and it has a population of 90,000 inhabitants.
Lugo’s culinary offer is quite wide. Although its traditional cooking is based on veal and pork, visitors may also taste excellent fish and seafood in any city restaurant. The most popular typical dish is the Galician “lacón con grelos” (pork shoulder cooked with turnip, potatoes and chorizo).
Octopus is the king of every Galician fest (sliced in pieces, paprika and salt marinated and sprayed with olive oil). Other popular dishes are the “empanadas”: a thin stuffed bread-like pastry. They can be filled with meat, bonito, scallops, cockles, octopus, although the typical empanadas in Lugo are those stuffed with “zorza” (pork), loin, eels, bacon and apples. Traditional desserts are: strawberries, “os freixós” and local cheese.
