This itinerary details the four major overland routes from London, United Kingdom to Istanbul, Turkey by means of train, bus, and ferry. The distance is about 1,865 miles and requires 30 hours of straight driving to cover the distance---by car. Trains and buses go slower, but provide a better journey. Each of the four trips are quite easy to arrange.

Via Belgium & Czech Republic

  • The Eurostar makes a daily trip between London and Brussels, departing London at 08:58 and arriving in Brussels at 12:08. Cost: $109
  • Take the 19:28 Thalys train to Cologne, reaching its destination at 21:15. Cost: $32
  • The City Night Line (CNL) runs a sleeper to Prague, leaving Cologne at 22:28 and entering Prague at 09:26. Cost: $82
  • Spend the night in Prague.
  • A EuroCity train exits Prague at 09:39, arriving in Budapest at 16:35. Cost: $45
  • Spend the night in Budapest.
  • Take the 07:10 InterCity train to Bucharest, entering the city at 22:27. Cost: $65
  • Spend the night in Bucharest.
  • The Bosphor plys the route between Bucharest and Istanbul daily, leaving Bucharest at 12:30 and reaching Istanbul the next day at 07:50. Cost: $86

Via Germany & Austria

  • Take the Eurostar to Paris, departing London at 09:17 and arriving in Paris at 12:59. Cost: $59
  • Spend the night in Paris.
  • There is a daily TGV to Vienna, leaving Paris at 09:10, changing trains in Frankfurt, and reaching Vienna at 21:04. Cost: $231
  • Spend the night in Vienna.
  • Take the 13:48 RailJet to Budapest, exiting Vienna at 13:48 and entering Budapest at 16:49. Cost: $60
  • There is a daily 19:10 train, the Ister, from Budapest to Bucharest, arriving in Bucharest at 12:10 the next day. Cost: $77
  • Take the Bosphor to Istanbul, leaving at 12:30 and reaching Istanbul at 07:50 the next day. Cost: $59

Via Serbia & Bulgaria

  • Take the Eurostar to Paris, departing London at 09:17 and arriving in Paris at 12:59. Cost: $59
  • Spend the night in Paris.
  • The TGV runs to Munich, leaving Paris at 09:10, changing trains in Mannheim, and reaching Munich at 15:28. Cost: $116
  • Take the 23:40 EuroNight sleeper to Zagreb, entering the city at 08:58 the next day. Cost: $51
  • There is a day train to Belgrade, departing Zagreb at 10:55 and arriving in Belgrade at 17:32. Cost: $71
