Leusden
At first sight, Leusden is a sleeping community, inhabitants go to Amersfoort for their shopping, drinking and cultural action. Leusden though has some important WWII sites. First of all there is the 'Grebbelinie' along the 'Valleikanaal' channel, a defence line where several bunkers can be found, and trenches have been reconstructed recently. A short period of fighting to place here when the Nazi army invaded The Netherlands. Kamp Amersfoort is, though named after the bigger city, located within the Leusden municipality. It was a German war camp, where over 35.000 prisoners have been kept during German occupation. Some remnants can be found as well as the 'execution lane'. There is a visitors centre with more info. There is also a Russian Cemetery, where Russian soldiers that helped in liberating the country are buried.
