La Guajira is a department in the Costa Norte region of Colombia.
In 2011, the guerilla was ravaging the region. Today, it is quite easy and safe to travel around the region.
The first bigger city after reaching Colombia from Venezuela is Riohacha. There are variouse busses from Maicao or Santa Marta everyday - price ranges from 30.000 for Riohacha - Santa Marta and 10.000 Maicao - Riohacha
- El Cabo de la Vela - Beautiful well known beach in the desert of the Peninsula de la Guajira. Even if you are offered a lot of tours (understand direct transport) from Santa Marta or Riohacha. You can easily navigate the transportation with basic spanish.
- Camarones and its flamingos in the lagoons marks the entrance of the desert of La Guajira.
Read the Stay safe section on the Colombia page.
Due to the situation in Venezuela, there is quite a lot of smuggling of primary products (rice, fuel..) but it mostly stays out of sight.
Tourism is picking up in the past years and tourists are not targeted as it would give a bad press.
Places like Cabo de La Vela, Riohacha, Palomino and San Juan del Cesar are safe for tourism now.
