Kocherinovo

Kocherinovo (pop. 2362) is a town in Southwest Bulgaria, part of Kyustendil Province.

The town is the administrative center of Kocherinovo Municipality, which lies in the southern part of Kyustendil Province. The settlement was founded in the 18th century. The first school in Kocherinovo was established in 1864 and the first community center "Probuda" opened in 1919. Kocherinovo became town in 1974. In the 1930s, the famous Bulgarian poet Nikola Vaptsarov worked in the now defunct paper factory near Kocherinovo as a stoker and mechanic. After operating for nearly 100 years the factory was closed in 1989 and stripped down from its equipment. At the “Treti Mart” central square you will find several restaurants, cafés, grocery stores, pharmacy, ATM, bank, post office and a souvenir shop.

By bus

• Hourly buses connect the town with Blagoevgrad normally at the 20th minute of almost every hour starting from 06:40 until 19:00. Last bus coming back from Blagoevgrad is normally at 20:00. Check the timetable on the bus stop at the central square or contact the provider Rila Express for details.
• There are at least 3 daily buses coming from Sofia - Ovca Kupel bus station and as many going back to the capital. You can call the Ovca Kupel bus station for timetables, however be prepared they might not speak English.
• The town has a train station located next to E79 road, about three kilometers from the center. This makes arriving by train somehow inconvenient unless someone is picking you up by car at the station. 4 trains come and go to Sofia via Kocherinovo on daily basis.
• As of February 2018, the daily bus from Sofia to Rila Monastery passes by Kocherinovo at about 12:10 and later leaves the Monastery at 15:00 (arriving in Kocherinovo at about 15:50).

If you have time visit the church to light a candle for good health and prosperity.

Visit the private museum for old cars and memorabilia where for years the owner (nicknamed Billy) has been collecting old cars, motorcycles, signs, radios, TV sets and virtually every old memorabilia he got his hands on. Usually it is open every day (sometimes closed on Sundays) from 9 to 17. Free of charge, but you are welcome to leave a donation. Directions: Take the road to Rila Monastery and before passing the Kocherinovo end-of-town sign look for a red fence on your left side.

Do

The yearly fair of the town is organized on 21 September. Usually lasts for two days, and as everything else, takes place on the central square. It includes dance and music performances, attractions, fireworks and etc.

• Very well stocked supermarket and cafe named Capitano opened in the town in 2017. As it is not in the central square it is easy to miss. GPS coordinates are 42.083389, 23.054870
• There is a souvenir shop located opposite the “Treti Mart” central square. As of February 2018 the shop appears to be permanently closed.
