Klaipeda is a town in the southwestern corner of Lithuania. Originally founded by baltic tribes, the city and castle was build by German knights and called Memel. Memel was part of Prussia and heavy fights with lithuanian lords took place. Besides invasions from Sweden and Russia the city was mainly part of the Prussian Kingdom and a prosperous harbour town. After Germany lost the World War I Lithunia gained independence (under partial french mandate) but Memel stayed under an autonomous German administration. After Germany lost World war II the Soviet Union annexed Lithuania and Memel was renamed Klaipeda. Since the independence in 1990 Klaipeda wants to come back as the lithuanian harbour and a tourist destination for families.

It is the gateway to the Curonian Spit, a sand bar something like 100 km in length and 4 km in breadth that arcs down to the Kaliningrad region of Russia.

There are many things to do in Klaipėda. If you like nature - you must visit Curonian spit.

If you like clubbing - there are many clubs in Klaipėda. Best ones are - Kalifornija, El Calor, Honolulu and Global.

If you are first time in Klaipėda, I would suggest you to visit Kalifornia club. Entrance is free of charge. Pint of beer costs 6 Lt (€1,73 or £1,2). This club has great athmosphere. Best days to get in are: Thursday (many young students come on that day), Friday and Sathurday.

There is also a big and wide sand beach at Smiltynė, full of locals and tourists in the summer. Giruliai and Melnragė beaches are at Northern Klaipėda, big and popular place to visit. The water is clean and warm.

There are many shopping malls in Klaipėda. The biggest one is called Akropolis and it is the bigest shopping mall in the Baltics. There are many things to do in Akropolis: cinema, ice-ring, rastaurants, shops, 2 supermarkets, pizzerias and so on. Akropolis Klaipėda website.

There are many pubs and bars in Klaipėda to spend some time just sitting relaxing and drinking. Most of the pubs are located in the city center, but, however - there are many nice pubs in the southern part of the city (mainly - near Naikupės street). Naikupės street may be reached by getting on the bus or shuttle bus number 3. Drinks there are 2-3 times cheaper than in the city center.

On average pint of beer in the pub costs between 2-6 Lt (€0,57-1,7). Local beer quality is one of the best in the World, but there are many international beer brands served (for example - Carlsberg, Tuborg, Faxe, Bud and so on).
