Kirov Station

Kirov (Russian: Ки́ров KEE-ruhf) is the capital city of Kirov Oblast. According to Russian Census 2010, the population of Kirov is 473'300 people. It was first mentioned in documents in 1374. The city is also known as Vyatka and Khlynov, which are its previous names. Vyatka is also the name of the river (major tribute of Kama river) flowing through the city.

By train

Kirov is a major station on the Trans-Siberean Railway, therefore it is served by numerous trains, connecting it to Moscow and other Russian cities. Most people arrive to the city by train.

Kirov Rail Station (Kirov-I)

Also known as Kirov Passenger Terminal. This is the main passenger train station in the city. Trains from this station connect the city to Moscow, Saint Petersburg and all other cities on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Also, there are local trains to Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan and Izhevsk, as well as trains to Russian Black Sea coast. Normally it takes from 12 to 14 hours to get to/from Moscow by overnight train.

Kirov Kotlassky Rail Station (Kirov-II)

This is a minor station serving trains on the non-electrified railway to the north (Kotlas, Komi Republic).

By plane

Pobedilovo airport is situated 22 kilometers to the West from the city. It was virtually not functioning in the 90's, but in the first decade of the XXI century the flight to Moscow was reintroduced. Now the airport has daily service to Moscow, and flights to Saint Petersburg, Anapa, Sochi and Naryan-Mar (operated by UTair and IzhAvia). Currently Tu-134, An-24 and ATR-42 planes are used, but after the renovation of the runway, which is due to finish in 2012, the airport will be able to accept Airbus A319 and Boeing-737 class of planes. There are plans to introduce international flights to Turkey and Egypt if the airport manages to obtain the international status.

By bus

Kirov Bus Terminal serves routes to Yoshkar-Ola, Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, Syktyvkar, Ufa, Cheboksary, Izhevsk and Ulyanovsk, as well as many settlements in Kirov Oblast.

Get around

Public transport

Public transport in Kirov has a developed network with buses, trolleys and marshrut taxies ("marshrutkas"). It is also a must-do experience as prices (12 rubles, which is around 30 euro cents (April 2012)), fleet and public transport culture preserved much of that from the soviet times. Events and Festivals

Ice climbing world cup - part of the world cup competitions takes place in Kirov every year. (The final Lead and Speed competitions in March 2012)

Igloo Building competition It is a team competition for the best snow sculpture in different nominations. It is held in the Fairy-Tale Preserve site in the "Zarechniy "park across the Vyatka River usually in March.

Greenlandia Festival is a 3-day russian bard music festival that takes place in July every year in Bosharovo not far from Kirov. Alcohol free, kids friendly festival with multiple concerts. Some people camp, some just come for selected concerts.


Local crafts are unique and beautiful:

Dymkovo toys - a famous local ceramic toy can be found in big shopping centers, in specialized crafts shops (e.g. Vorovskogo 52 or Upita 13) or in the special Dymkovo toy shop on Svobodi 67.

Matryoshka nesting doll - Kirov is one of the center of Matreshka production. Matreshka from this region (Vyatskaya Matreshka) is inlaid with straw and is exceptionally beautiful and unique.

Kukarka Lace (aka Vyatka Lace or Kirov Lace) is a type of traditional handmade bobbin weaving and one of the well-known folk Kirov arts. Together with other local crafts made out of straw, woodknobs (nodule), skein, or juniper keep they can be found in the multiple crafts shops around the city.



"Danar" ("Данар")- is a turkish doner idea adopted by the local company. Fresh ingredients from the region, low prices. More than 20 points around the city.

Apartments-hotels offer nice flats and often for better prices than hotels. E.g. "kvartirotel" (8332) 77-74-00, or "Vash Dom" (8332) 47-36-00.
