'Kappad, or Kappakadavu locally, is famous as the beach near Calicut, India, where the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on May 20, 1498. A small stone monument there commemorates the landing with the inscription, "Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498." Currently it is one of the most important tourist places in Kerala, with a wide and beautiful beach.

Nearest railway station: Kozhikode, about 16 km

Nearest airport: Karipur International Airport, Kozhikode about 23 km from Kozhikode town.

Private transport vehicles are available to reach destinations from Calicut Municipal Bus Stand

Get around

Taxis and auto-rickshaws.


The wide beautiful beach.


Spent some time lying on the beach.


Nothing much to buy. Shopping can be made at Calicut.


A few eateries are avaialble but it is best advised to carry some packed food.


Toddy at the local toddy shop.


The place can be visited within a day and major accomodation is available in Calicut.


Get out

Buses to Calicut ply on a regular basis. Taxis can behired to take you back to Calicut.
