Itoigawa (糸魚川) is a city in Niigata prefecture.
Itoigawa is situated at the northern terminus of the great fault line, the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line geologically separating North-Eastern Japan and South-Western Japan. The whole city is designated as the Geopark.
The closest airport to the Itoigawa is Toyama Airport.
From Tokyo Station, Itoigawa can be reached by taking the Joetsu Shinkansen (Tanigawa, Max Tanigawa, Toki or Max Toki) to Echigo-Yuzawa (越後湯沢) and then transferring to the Hakutaka (はくたか) limited express train for the run to Itoigawa. This ride lasts about 2 hours 45 minutes with a good connection in Echigo-Yuzawa, and it costs ¥9830 each way. Japan Rail Pass holders have to pay ¥1450 each way for the portion of the trip between Echigo-Yuzawa and Naoetsu, which is operated by Hokuetsu Railway. The JR East Rail Pass covers the Echigo-Yuzawa - Naoetsu segment, but does not cover the portion onward to Itoigawa; the full fare must be paid (¥1690).
