Ichalkaranji is in western India about 425 km from Mumbai. The City is rapidly growing and now merging with neighbouring Jaysingpur town to form a large satellite suburban township with Sangli city which is just 24 km away.

Before 1980, Ichalkaranji was famous for cotton poplin, dhoti, and cotton saris. In mid-1980s, weavers of the city started producing denim, canvas, chiffon, and fabric for school uniforms (khaki drill). In 1842 James Bullough and William Kenworthy invented a semi automatic fabric weaving machine called Power Loom. Although it is self-acting, it has to be stopped to recharge empty shuttles. It was the mainstay of the Lancashire cotton industry for a century.

With rough estimate one Power Loom produces 80 meters of fabric per day of an average price Rs.30/meter, the annual production of the Power Loom fabric in Ichalkaranji in Rupee term is 10, 000 Cr. ($2.2 Billion).
Northrop Loom, Popularly known as Cimco Auto Loom in Ichalkaranji is a fully automatic version of power loom. It was named after James Henry Northrop who invented the pirn-charging mechanism in 1895. The principal advantage of the Northrop loom was that it was fully automatic; when a warp thread broke the loom stopped until it gets fixed. When the shuttle ran out of thread, Northrop's mechanism ejects the depleted pirn and loads a new full one without stopping.

In 1998 Vajpayee Government introduce Credit Linked Capital Subsidy scheme called Technology up-gradation fund TUF for modernization and technologically up gradation of the textile sector in India. After this Government of Maharashtra State also offer Capital Subsidy to the new textile projects of Shuttle less looms such as Rapier loom,Projectile Loom and Air Jet Loom. Entrepreneurs of the city took this as opportunity and Imported used Shuttle less looms form European countries. This was a major turning point of fast growing textile industry of the city. After understanding the technical and commercial aspect of this modern textile looms, Entrepreneurs started importing new and latest Shuttle less looms from Europe and Japan. As of 2010 world’s best weaving technology is been used by weavers of Ichalkaranji. Even though the size and potentials of Indian textile industry, import substitute latest technology engineering goods for weaving (modern weaving machines) are not manufactured in India.
City has approximately 8000 shuttleless looms working 24 Hr a day, 7 days a week.
With rough estimate one shuttleless loom produces 175 meters of fabric per day with an average price Rs.70/meter, the annual production of the shuttleless loom industry in Ichalkaranji is Rs 3000 Cr. ($0.7 billion)

Fabric dyeing and finishing
Fabric needs to get white or to some other color after weaving before marketing. This process is done at fabric dyeing and finishing units, popularly known as "process houses". Ichalkaranji has approximately 35 process houses working 24 Hr a day, 6 days a week.
The city has many garment manufacturing units. This industry is very labor oriented. Some units have made transportation agreement for employees with long daily commutes.
Tata Nano small car is very similar to Meera, a small car developed in 1970 by Mr.Shankarrao Kulkarni of Ichalkaranji. Sugarcane is the main Cash crop. The city is surrounded by 5 Sugar refinerys, Annually they processes Over 5000000 metric ton of Sugarcane, as of 2009 Sugarcane prices of 2600 per ton. Sugarcane farmers itself bring in approximately Rs 13000000000 (1300 Cr) to the economy of the citys Catchment area. 4 out of 5 sugar mill have Cogeneration plants. The oldest of these 5 sugar mills is Deshbhakta Ratnappa Kumbhar Panchaganga Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd, founded by Dr.Ratnappa Kumbhar, a Indian independence activist who signs the final draft of the Constitution of India. Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd, one of the leading sugar companies in India, has set-up a Bagasse based 30 Megawatt Cogeneration power plant in Ichalkaranji.

Ichalkaranji is popular among non vegetarians of this part country for its unique homemade Dinner of Goat mutton called Suke Mutton severed with Rassa ( a thin and spicy soup of goat) , handmade Bhakri and onion salad. Nearest Railway Junction : Miraj Miraj railway junction is a very busy junction and entry point to Ichalkaranji . Miraj lies on Mumbai Bangalore main line and has daily connectivity to important cities. Miraj junction has 4 broad gauge branches connecting it. Long distance trains like Karnataka Sampark Kranti Express, Goa express, Chalukya Express, Poorna express, Swarna Jayanti Express, Ajmer Bangalore Express, Jodhpur Bangalore express, Gandhidham Bangalore express, Hubli express and numerous other passenger trains are available from Miraj junction. Miraj railway station is about 28 km from Ichalkaranji . One can get down at Miraj and then take a bus or cab to Ichalkaranji. It takes 20 minutes from Miraj railway station to Ichalkaranji.
