Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania. It is very small and intimate compared to the larger cities on the mainland, reflecting the small size of the state. The city is split in half by the Derwent River, and joined by several bridges.
Hobart is roughly a half-hour's drive from the main airport near Seven Mile Beach. Alternatively, it is several hours from Launceston airport (hire cars can be rented either in advance or at the airports), or the best part of a day's drive from the ferry terminal Devenport.
As a partly convict-built city, Hobart has many beautiful historic buildings, especially in the area around the river. Salamanca Market is a major attraction several days per week, and the large sandstone warehouses behind the market have been converted into a maze of craftsmen's workshops, giftshops, restaurants and other 'crafty' shops. The city has a beautiful Botanical Gardens, a museum and art gallery, and an Antarctic museum.
The country's first legal casino was built in Hobart, and it has been upgraded many times to keep it at a good standard. Wrest Point Casino is in Sandy Bay, just a few minutes drive from the city.
